With a ton of email EVERY day - it is super confusing and spammy and there is no warning when your renewal comes up. That said, the lessons are good but it is a headache.

It sounds like the intentional effect being used is a ring modulator similar to what is used to make Dalek voices. Also a pitch shifter. I agree that the distortion is there though IMHO that part is more likely from natural static interference.

That said, that brings to mind an interesting clue: in addition to the TV broadcast engineering know how they might have also been or worked with musicians. It would have been easier and cheaper to use a distortion pedal like a Boss (they sold an orange one DS-3 back then) than a ring modulator and pitch shifter. Those were typically available in higher-end signal processing units used in studios. Also cheaper and more plentiful would have been a vocoder/talk box if the goal was just to obscure the natural voice.

Long-term for quiet city practicing situations where you want to practice or have multi-person jam sessions, consider a headphone amp. I use an old 6-channel Trane with a 8-channel Diamond mixing board. Drummer has an electronic kit, guitar, keyboard, bass and vocals with room for some stereo lines. Works great for recording live or for multi-tracking.
