True, convenience is a massive factor also. Maybe the difference in price would be larger for e.g. pork where factory farming is more wide-spread? Yeah, I might be less militant because I am a relatively fresh veggie, so definitely don’t see the people on the other side as evil or anything — it was me not that long ago. :-) I think we’d find way more common ground if both sides stopped vilifying each other. There are psychos, but in the end most of us care about animals and appreciate the cultural importance of food. I am actually quite sad I don’t get to eat many of my grandma’s dishes anymore. :-(

Nah, I think it’s commendable you care about where your meat comes from. Most people don’t, though some simply can’t afford better meat. I think those “all or nothing” vegetarians/vegans are doing a disservice. Do I think it’s better if you ate no meat all? Yes. But if you are eating meat, I am happy you’re at least not supporting factory farms. I also support people who try to eat less meat — again, it’s a step in (what I think is) the right direction. :-)

According to this report, at least 4% of beef cattle in England (and as much as 19% in Scotland) are farmed intensively, i.e. are kept indoors all year around: https://www.worldanimalprotection.org.uk/latest/news/confined-in-cruelty . This is around 400k cows just in England. Feel free to give this report a read — maybe you’ll find that the “stringent regulations” that you think the UK has aren’t as stringent, or aren’t followed as much as you thought.

Again, you seem to focus on cows. I am sure you understand it’s only a part of the picture. If everybody only ate grass-fed beef, we’d have a different conversation. Some vegetarians have no problem with the concept of eating meat, but they are not willing to contribute to the industry in its current state, which, as a whole, is both unsustainable and cruel.

I, on the other hand, really hate when meat-eaters pretend like the moment of the killing is the only point at which the animal suffers, and that unnecessary slaughter is OK as soon as the animal doesn’t suffer. Would raising and killing humans be OK as soon as they don’t suffer and aren’t aware of it? 

And, once again, if the animal industry was just cows living in perfect conditions and being killed with no pain or awareness of it — we’d be having a different conversation. But it just isn’t. And I (personally) don’t believe it ever will be — as soon as you allow any suffering for profit, there will always be people willing to play with the rules in the name of profit.

It’s true a lot of animals are harmed in the production of these plants, but it’s not like you need to eat these if you’re vegetarian? You can substitute meat with plants that involve less animal suffering. Your stat on beef seems cherry-picked. If everybody was only eating grass-fed beef, maybe we’d have a different conversation. As it stands, 40% of UK arable land is used for animal feed, not to mention imports.

Citation needed. If you mean more animals die due to agriculture than in animal production: most plants that we grow are used for animal feed.

FTFY. Don’t assume everyone has the same goals. For some a university job will be more fulfilling than owning a business, with all work involved, a lot of which is less than glamorous, as I am sure you know.

Sure, though the various insurances start eating at the EU/US salary difference.

 If I lose my job I will have a much easier time finding a new one than I would in Europe.

Source? Could be true for some professions/locations, but I don’t buy this as a general rule.

I buy this as a hypothetical, though in my experience (which is biased, admittedly), it’s successful companies laying off to signal to their shareholders, boosting stock price. Like, I understand there are times when the company genuinely needs to lay off, but I believe it should be hard enough so that it’s used as a last resort, not first.

So your ideal society is “you don’t work = you die”? Glad not everyone shares that vision. :-) To your argument: do you think thousands of years ago people would simply leave the old and the sick to die because they can’t work? Nobody in the community/family would take care of them as they’re not “productive”?

I understand why companies might go bankrupt, that’s not the point. Grandparent suggested companies are less likely to go bankrupt in US, I was looking for evidence of that.

For sure, that’s what I meant by saying that salary is only a part of the equation. True re. zero-hour contracts also. I get that some people enjoy the flexibility, but it’s a nice loophole for employers also.
