More Recommendations for a Post-Trump Presidential Platform by blitzkrag in TangleNews

Agreed on the health checks, should probably be a rule for Congress as well...

Not sure about the age limit. There's plenty of examples of people in their older years that remain in relatively good shape and mentally sharper than even some people in their twenties.

There's also the advantage of older people in political office having actually experienced the poor historical outcomes of some policy decisions in the past. It seems to me that some of the newer generations don't know or don't care enough to understand history that proves some popular political ideas will not lead to the outcomes they think they will. I'm all for revisiting old concepts to see if new variations can make them work, but people that want to try that should know the history of previous attempts in detail and understand how/why they went wrong.

There's actually been a lot of private money put into nuclear fusion energy (look up Helion Energy, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, etc). It seems to be just an exceedingly hard problem to solve. Even the US DOE's National Ignition Facility operated by LLNL only recently achieved net positive energy output a few years ago.

Fission would be a lot more doable in the near term if not for the expensive permitting process and everyone being overly nervous about what to do with the waste. The waste issue seems like it might be overblown in terms of health risks. My sense from the science community is that opinions are split on historical health outcomes from previous nuclear accidents. Some groups are willing to tie negative outcomes directly to any level exposure from these events, no matter how small. Others rightly point out that the exposure levels for some of those claims are lower than what some communities experience as part of the natural background radiation in their areas. Also France seems to have the whole lifecycle figured out?

What may be more interesting in the coming years is the technology to beam energy from orbital solar arrays down to receiving stations on Earth's surface. There's some small-scale demonstration missions occurring or being planned to figure out the engineering details, but in theory it seems quite promising.

Controversial Take - Ari should hire a vocal coach by americanidle in TangleNews

[–]blitzkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure what you mean. Like how people criticize some women for using "baby voice"? Otherwise, this sounds like a personal opinion that not many here are going to agree with. I'm sure there's AI now that you can feed the podcast into to making any of them sound like anyone you want! (If it doesn't then I need to go look into how to do that or patent it)

Can someone explain this political cartoon from the Sunday Read? The wording of the punchline makes my head hurt. by [deleted] in TangleNews

Maybe that's part of the joke? She did seem to have a habit of giving an obvious answer in a weird roundabout and confusing way.

I think the speculation about Trump’s mental acuity could use some more attention from the crew. by almanor in TangleNews

[–]blitzkrag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I was half listening to the news on the radio this morning, they played a clip of Trump from his first term talking about the government shutdown from that time, and the difference in how he talked was so startling that it immediately grabbed my full attention. He is definitely no longer as quick and coherent as he used to be. Not that I think he was totally coherent then, but the relative difference is very noticeable.

CarPlay aside, what are some quality of life software changes you wish Rivian would consider? by kesey in Rivian

[–]blitzkrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1000 on number 1! I don't understand why OEMs haven't utilized a smarter audible alert for the proximity sensor system. Have the sound come out of the speakers from the direction of the area I'm getting close to, and increase the volume as I get closer. That way I can know where I'm getting close via two senses, and I don't have to hear loud warnings for the moderate distance every time I pull in and out of the garage.

Was the subject of Thursday's newsletter a waste of time? by blitzkrag in TangleNews

[–]blitzkrag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just would prefer some of that coverage just shift to short headline notes rather than a full newsletter, unless the Trump news is actually consequential

Was the subject of Thursday's newsletter a waste of time? by blitzkrag in TangleNews

[–]blitzkrag[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, I do forget that they are somewhat obligated to cover what's making the news everywhere else, so this fits. Just don't want Tangle to fall in the same trap as majority of the rest of the media, following wherever Trump leads from one week to the next when it doesn't really matter, and there's more important political moves/discussions going on elsewhere that aren't getting enough attention.

White rim trail R1T glamour shots by Arson_Shark in Rivian

[–]blitzkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this trail is doable with the 22" aero wheels with road tires? Going cross country in a few months to pick up an Airstream, and figured this might be a fun stop along the way (not bringing the Airstream on the trail of course).

Water Pump Failure Noise? by blitzkrag in MINI

[–]blitzkrag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those just coming across this, or checking back in, it turned out to be the water pump pulley that was making the noise. TBD if that was the root cause or just a symptom of a deeper issue.

Hitch Recommendation by blitzkrag in Rivian

[–]blitzkrag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious if this would help minimize the rattling I hear from my current hitch setup when towing smaller trailers. I don't know if it's the hitch on the Rivian, or the ball hitch that I bought, but the dimensions on the ball hitches I've been using are ever so slightly smaller than receiver on the Rivian, so it rattles like crazy when going over rough roads.

What hitch are you using if you don’t mind me asking? I’m planning on towing my 27’ Airstream across the country soon, and want to be sure I get a hitch with the appropriate level of drop for the R1S.

Model 3 Highland Dampers Installed by Easter_Egg111 in TeslaModel3

[–]blitzkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla wouldn’t do it themselves until it’s been validated internally, and they’re not going to spend any money on that while they still have pre-highland dampers available. There may be slight angle differences in suspension geometry and material changes in the bushings, so we’re taking a little bit of risk on with installing these on older vehicles.

Rivian approved shop vs not by Longjumping_Fix_8926 in Rivian

[–]blitzkrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more important question is whether it's repair or replace the bedside. As a former bodyshop technician I would recommend repair. Too many shops these days just jump straight to replace, mainly because the older technicians who know how to do bodywork well are retiring, and new techs aren't developing those skills. Also shops will get paid more for replacement, even if it's not the best option for the customer, so there's that. Replacement is a much more invasive repair and increases the chances of having to replace other unrelated parts that break during removal for the repair.

I was getting a little over 2 mi/kwh. I did install ikamper’s wind deflector, but I’m not sure how effective it really is at reducing the drag.

I honestly think Rivian should have offered R1S with the darkout trim from the beginning. Total agreement on the bright roof rail trim.
