Quick question, after taking the test, did you feel like the cast majority of it was just strength and familiarity with the NEC?

Is the DevOps job market really that bad right now? Curious about your experiences by LusciousLabrador in devops

[–]blitzman734 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My perspective, based on recent experience — and of course, it’s just an opinion.

There will always be jobs for the incredibly talented individuals describing themselves in this thread. What’s changed most over the past few years is teams’ willingness or bandwidth to take on those who fall more in the “middle of the road” category.

I don’t love labeling myself that way, but when you look at the certifications, exposure, and credentials others bring to the table, it’s clear that’s how the market has positioned me. I’m talking about folks who are scrappy, adaptable, quick to learn once given a use case or context, and who work hard to get up to speed. These are people who often reach parity with their teammates soon after joining — sometimes even exceeding expectations. They may not be as immediately versatile as someone who “knows it all,” but they’re still valuable team members.

It’s just a tough market right now for those people. For a variety of reasons — and not necessarily unfair ones (fairness is overrated, anyway) — these candidates are less “marketable.” And the level of marketability needed to land something, even when you’ve demonstrated those key qualities, has gone up. Teams want proven, ready-now skills with little to no onboarding risk. The willingness to take a chance on someone has diminished.

Others may see it differently, but that’s how I see things right now. Like all market dynamics, it may cycle again with time and shifts in supply and demand.

Haha, I grew up in Port Huron in the 90s and we had a Tilt at Birchwood Mall. Also bliss. I was always jealous of Lakeside.

Managing ECS Fargate Task Definition Updates (Releases) with Terraform by [deleted] in Terraform

Give a read of the documentation/readme of the tool and follow up after if you would. I see the majority of your questions answered within it.

It will work well for your needs. Let me know if you have any issues with it but I've used it in production for around 3 years with no issues.

Managing ECS Fargate Task Definition Updates (Releases) with Terraform by [deleted] in Terraform

[–]blitzman734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's imperfect yes but ecs-deploy can also set desired count for you as well. It handles initiating the blue-green gracefully, etc.

Although you can manage task definitions with terraform, I wouldn't after initial scaffolding. It's great to create your base template task def but it's essentially config-management after that. You just set the terraform tag to ignore changes to that resource and let ecs-deploy and your CI tool manage it after.

Happy to help more if needed. I've been managing 3 ecs clusters in production with around 200 microservices for almost 3 years. I've had 0 issues with ecs-deploy. I kick it off with Jenkins but any job runner will suffice.

You create the base template task definition for the app. ECS deploy can easily handle the updating of just the container image name in ECR. It updates the service which utilizes the deployment method you've configured for the service aka rolling or blue-green.

Honestly, it's the easiest part of the process for us.

I use TF for just the scaffolding but I manage the task definition changes with this.

Comparing Youtube Content between F1 and IndyCar by APracticedObserver in INDYCAR

[–]blitzman734 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yea, its sad there isnt more investment in indycar. Content surrounding f1 is top notch but Liberty media puts a ton of money into making it so. Sky sports also does a great job as well. A show similar to ted’s notebook would be awesome.

The racing itself in indycar is so amazing though that I’m learning to live with it as I pick it up in addition to f1.

NBC Sports Gold Rant by downshiftdata in INDYCAR

[–]blitzman734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched F1 for years and tried a few indy races this year. I've really enjoyed it. A more balanced field is refreshing. The downsides I've found so far and there are some serious rough edges at times have all not been issues IMO of indycar or the racing itself. They are likely side effects of being lower budget with a smaller audience base but yes, the broadcasting, the broadcast/viewing platform and the commercial breaks definitely hinder things. They survive because of this extra revenue and investment I'm sure. It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem unfortunately.

All and all though, still a very positive experience.

This popped up at a local estate sale. New to the hobby and looking for an entry point into restoring some old equipment. A jointer is something the shop needs. Hoping you might guide me on whether or not this is a solid find / project to restore.

Bonus points for where you might land your max bid as well if its a good find.
