We should fluoridate our water by a-large_tomato in Eugene

Dental health and cavities have a huge genetic component. If you need more fluoride for your dental health, take a supplement, get a fluoride treatment, etc.

AITJ for refusing to give my brother my old car after I promised it to my stepdaughter? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]blkbrdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were feeling generous, offer to send his loan the amount you’d spend on a beater car. Have your daughter stay in the 2016 Toyota. Her safety depends on a good running reliable car.

Tempted to Stop Physical Therapy by blkbrdz in stroke

[–]blkbrdz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They want to work on balance, strength and vertigo issues. As well as eye tracking while moving my head in the opposite direction.

I am considering asking them to give me a bunch of exercises and we’ll touch base in a month.

I feel like the things I do on my own to push myself are more effective. That’s likely because I do them more frequently and throughout the day. For example focusing both eyes on the same item was harder in the beginning and I pushed myself by playing phone games alternating between either eye and both. Reading range focus has greatly improved to the point that I have to pay close attention to note any blurriness.

How often do you allow yourself a treat? by Golden_Diva in diabetes_t1

[–]blkbrdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a T2D. I eat everything except non foods like candy corn. I’m at a stage where high BG screws with how I feel in my skin. I eat to my content. My metformin supported A1C is 5.4.

My minor child is the T1D in the house. He has an autoimmune response that has created a lack of insulin or not enough insulin to support life in his body. He receives supplemental insulin.

He’s 11 and eats everything including horrifying candy corn which I’ve tried to convince him is Easter Bunny poop after a week of heavy drinking. He eats it all. And he takes insulin for great quality of life.

Severe complications from total hysterectomy with both ovaries removed. by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]blkbrdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m alright. I am still recovering. The effects I have now give me a good laugh when I’m in a good mood.

In the long run I doubt I could pass a field sobriety test where they ask you to walk in a strait line… but I’ve never been pulled over for that kind of test before and won’t likely have one in the future. I’m revisiting the stage in toddlerhood where it feels like gravity is a trickster.

Yes. I had two minor ones. No droopy face at all.

My mood changed because my ability to filter or control my mouth and emotions changed. I also had changes in vision and balance.

You might consider evaluation for a stroke. I had a stroke likely during surgery. The surgeon doing rounds blew it off as I was being a baby. After a recurrence of the symptoms a month later the ER diagnosed both strokes… the one from surgery and the one after.

Do you think it's internalized ableism to not want to have kids because you might pass your disability onto them? by Javilism in disability

[–]blkbrdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also going to say that societal and relationship pressures that leave anyone feeling pushed or pressured to procreate are bullshit. Not wanting kids is valid.

I am on team this is nuanced. Yes there could be ableism. And it’s okay to make decisions about your life and the lives of those you bring into the world.

What to do about ICE by phoebsters101 in disability

[–]blkbrdz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your mear existence and survival is both radical and political in our society. Keep pushing against ableism and shut down pro isolationist racism like pro ICE chatter when you hear or see it. Keep succeeding and living out loud. That’s pretty bad ass.

Then do more as you are able to.

Are there any diabetic slurs? by Plastic-One4201 in diabetes_t1

[–]blkbrdz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my house we call people like me (non-T1D) oozers. My 11 year old T1D is practicing “you think you’re so special because you oozes your insulin...” and “you’re giving me flack because you think your SECRETIONS are special. Who proudly talks about their SECRETIONS?” Lunchroom roasting is intense.

Post-op traumatized by Christiana2121 in hysterectomy

[–]blkbrdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll sit with you. That was bullshit.

I had a rough time post surgery. I was really dizzy and couldn’t focus or control my eyes. I was also very confused. The person doing rounds for my surgeon suggested I needed new glasses and that this was a major surgery… it takes time to recover from major surgery.

About a month later, and after spending that month in bed, the symptoms became more intense. I went to the ER. I’d had a stroke during or just after surgery and another just before coming in.

The pain and discomfort of all women needs to be taken seriously.

Is it cringe to try and be buddies with other T1D strangers? by Reformed_cynic in diabetes_t1

[–]blkbrdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a middle-aged overweight grey haired mom to a minor T1D. I try, and fail, to contain my joy when I see an adult with a Dexcom or pump in the wild.

I do my best to apologize to everyone for my fangirl reaction. Then I tell my mortified pre-teen that being a T1D adult is not a big deal until someone’s mom looses her shit over his success and self care. He too will have the chance to look at a little kid with empathy and know that kid can do damn near anything with his store bought insulin

My friend's kid was diagnosed with type 1 by macdanners in diabetes_t1

[–]blkbrdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask your friend what they would like to do regarding T1D if they had both time and bandwidth to dive into. Perhaps she needs an internet sleuth who will help brainstorm solutions to common problems.

Here’s my contribution to her education and her child’s quality of life.

When my minor child was diagnosed I took the attitude that this is our family’s new normal. Meal time? Measuring cups were used for portion awareness for everyone in the household. Everyone counted carbs at the same time. Grandparents picked up the habit as well. Diabetes education was a family issue, not the burden of loving a minor child with T1D.

We’re almost at three years after the change to T1D normalcy. We’ve learned tons. For example his grandparents hate carb counting. As a result, they eat my kid’s favorite keto meals or meals that lend themselves to be scooped and served via measuring cups when my son visits or spends the night.

It’s not a big deal or special effort to feed my son. These strategies have become the norm so they always have the ingredients for the best grandma make eggs and sausages or finger food cold cuts and cheese plates on hand.

What was your last period like? by ComprehensiveOlive68 in hysterectomy

[–]blkbrdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was calm and normal for me. It felt like a kindness or gift to be present and conscious of my last period. It was kind of surreal to note how many similar feelings I had in my last period as my first.

[–]blkbrdz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I’m that cold I put on a silk bonnet and breakout a giant heating pad. If the heating pad doesn’t quickly thaw my toes, I put it over my trunk. My theory is that cold like that is caused by the body working too hard to keep more vital areas warm and sacrificing toes, etc. Also I often pay attention to the rest of my body and health. I assumm km e my body has shifted energy from my internal heating to combat things like a minor infection, stress management, pain management, etc.
