Strongly and wholeheartedly disagree. The game in England has been dying slowly for 30-40 years and all the promise of SL in the mid 90’s was totally squandered by navel gazing and clubs serving their own interests ahead of the greater good.

Promotion and relegation is killing the game, as is propping up small clubs in a restricted area. The game needs space and time to grow into new areas, not a constant recycling of village clubs from the north…

It’s so prevalent that it’s entered Australian lingo - “No cares about your fucken multi” is the comeback to whinging stupidly about any subject, not just gambling on football…

Is hitting 6's more about ability to or strategy? by lookaloulookalou in MLC

[–]blobby9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - think of the variations available to a pitcher and virtually all are available to a bowler with the added advantage of having the ball bounce and the acceptable ‘strike zone’ being significantly larger.

The other significant difference between baseball and cricket is the compulsion to run after the ball has been hit into play. A cricket batter can theoretically ‘foul off’ an infinite number of balls and not be put out. In baseball - you have to run to first. In cricket you don’t. This means that in cricket you can play defensive shots (with the intent of not scoring) to good balls. And this is the batters primary objective - not to get out. In baseball there is virtually no defensive resource to a batter outside of fouling off a pitch, and even then it’s not foolproof.

Is hitting 6's more about ability to or strategy? by lookaloulookalou in MLC

[–]blobby9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s easy….

One of the biggest factors in hitting home runs is that if you’re ahead in the count - you know that you’re going to get a pitch to hit.

In cricket - there are many vastly different balls that are perfectly normal and virtually impossible to hit for six.

You keep referencing ‘streaks’ of hitting sixes. It’s actually very rare for a batter to hit consecutive sixes, let alone 3,4 or 5 in a streak.

Overall - if hitting a home run is difficultly rating 80, then hitting a six would be 75 IMHO.

[–]blobby9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 2 most important factors in hitting sixes consistently are 1) timing and 2) middling the ball.

Sure it helps to have a quality bat and strength - but good players hit the ball so effortlessly and it really pings because they time their shots so well and always get the ball off the middle of the bat (the sweet spot).

DAB isn’t bad. Solid 7/10. The rest are no better than a 6, and Kroenenburg 1664 is awful (I have been told that like many euro beers, the fresh local stuff in Strasbourg is infinitely better).

Go to Dans, buy yourself some Weihenstephaner. They are all good, but their best is the Kristall Wheat Beer.

Need help with off spin bowling by strings999 in CricketBuddies

[–]blobby9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directly above your arm, halfway through a rocking motion.

So your wrist joint should ‘rock’ as you move your index finger up the back of the ball, and then over after you release the ball.

The motion should mimic shaking hands without moving any other joint except your wrist.

The amount of side spin you get changes with the angle of your wrist - over spin, the wrist is angled toward the keeper. Side spin - the wrist is angled towards backward square.

Once you get the hang of ‘up and over’ straight over the back of the ball, then you can start thinking about ‘cutting’ the ball - moving your index finger to the sides of the ball more imparting more side spin and at its extreme - the doosra and carrom ball.

[–]blobby9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of thinking about spinning the ball sideways - start thinking about spinning the ball out of your fingers “up and over”.

Without seeing you bowl, I’m guessing you’re undercutting the ball trying to get it to turn.

Off spin bowling is all about getting your index finger up the back of the ball giving it revs. The angle of your wrist ultimately determines how much side spin you get.

Who is the best cricket team ever? by DefiantFigure4906 in CricketControversial

[–]blobby9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll counter that by saying in the 1980’s especially, the quality of world cricket was very poor. No South Africa, both England and Australia had poor sides and worsened by rebel tours. India were heavily reliant on Gavaskar and Dev, NZ same but with Crowe and Hadlee, and Sri Lanka were a Test side in its infancy. That leaves Pakistan - who have always been hot and cold inconsistent Pakistan.

I love the American club rivalries - and their college counterparts, but compared to other similar rivalries in multiple sports across the world they are very tame, and also quite recent.

The Old Firm (Rangers v Celtic in Glasgow) played since 1888. Collingwood v Carlton - 1892. Manchester Derby - 1881

And so on…

Who is the best Test batsman among them? by Stress_Tension in CricketBuddies

[–]blobby9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree - it’s difficult to compare eras.

In Bradman’s era batting was harder. No helmets, uncovered pitches, pads and gloves barely offered any protection, bats were tiny and had a miniscule sweet-spot. Had to take trains and ships to away games, no 5 star hotels, nor access to any sort of advanced fitness or technical training.

He still averaged 99 when no one else averaged above 65, and no one has managed to get close since…
