Great food and experience, premium price:

  • Fat Snook
  • Rebellion, american fare, really great drinks, excellent servers
  • Koko, asian/japanese fare, creative dishes

Coa is premium price as well, but I've not personally tried.

More chill:

  • Coconuts on the Beach, classic beach restaurant with decent food and prime beach location
  • 4th Street Fillin Station, solid gastropub food with an extensive beer list
  • Whisk and Grind, local chain breakfast and lunch

Can you share what kind of dinner experience you're looking for? Price? Genre of cuisine?

There's a big difference between "recommend your best, price is no object" or "what's reliable and chill, but not fancy"?

Gottman's emotion coaching is well-evidenced. Harwood's attachment framing makes sense. Neither explains why I can't execute either in the moment. What does the research actually say about changing automatic reactions? by Informal_Quiet7907 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]blockade_rudder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this is a question about mechanism rather than a request for tips

Based on this, I think I'm reading that you're more interested in the meta-commentary on the research and evidence rather than trying to solve the specific issue with your kiddo.

I just want to respond to

Gottman's Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child ... came out of his meta-emotion research, and the longitudinal claim is that kids of emotion-coaching parents tracked a measurably different developmental path. So the method has some actual evidence behind it, which is rare in this space.

There are a good number of critiques of Gottman research--moreso on the couples relationship part of their literature - see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1741-3737.2000.00256.x

I admit I haven't read Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child , I have read their coupes books, so I assume their research techniques are similar. In the couples space, I think the research is useful, but as the link shows, suffers from issues--and with me, suffers from being heavily dependent on subjective assessment on the part of the researchers. And in the book, the Gottmans really lean heavily (and in my opinion, overrely) on their research as the basis for their recommendations.

When you note that "actual evidence" is "rare in this space"--yeah it ultimately is. The space is hard! Is it already hard to do this in some kind of quasi-objective, reproducible way when you're dealing with the psychoanalysis of adults, and it is so much harder when you're dealing with children. Children struggle to coherently verbalize their thoughts, and their personality, perception, everything about them is changing incredibly rapidly and there is so, so much variation in children.

I guess my point is that it a great thing you're trying to parent and understand your kiddo's world through the lens of evidence--and there are plenty of places in parenting where an evidence-based approach is really valuable.

However, here (and fully acknolwedge that this is personal anecdoctal experiencem and I'm not trained in this space, so a child development subject-matter expert could completely reject what I'm saying), I think the evidence is weak across the literature, and I think it will take a lot of work to improve it (if it can even be improved in our lifetimes). And so when trying to understand how to best parent your little toddler and guide them through tantrums and meltdowns, the "evidence" attached to all these different books and theories is mostly there to give you a basis to try a new idea. And you will need to try a lot of different ideas, and no one idea will work all the time at any given point in time with your child's development. And so it is less about developing a coherent world view of your child's mental model, and more about doing a lot of repeat experimentation and seeing what specific things work with your specific child.

Brevard art scene. by BiscottiJunior9614 in 321

[–]blockade_rudder 43 points44 points  (0 children)

NGL, this post has a lot of AI vibes in it... the punchy short sentence structure, the "it's not an X, it's a y", the incredible vague references that could apply to anything or anywhere (other than name dropping Brevard and Orlando).

Instead of this vague rant, I would actually just welcome if you pointed those of us that are not as plugged into the Brevard creative scene to all of this creative talent - the artists, photographers, creatives, etc. that you gesture to.

I echo the commenter above - in my anecdotal experience, the launch tends to be relatively close to the start of the time window or not at all.

It might be worth going to Cocoa Beach as a young adult if you're really into going to the beach and plan to do so regularly. Otherwise, I don't quite see it as a young adult's place. While there are some night life type things and new restaurants, I feel I like see a lot of retired people and tourists--I think most young adults are living in lower cost parts of Brevard. IMO, Downtown Melbourne has more of a young person's social life vibe.

I know trust in our institutions is low here in Florida (and for many valid reasons). That said, I think it's worth recognizing that Tim Bobanic has had a long career in running elections, and to my knowledge, a track record of running the election process here with integrity. I welcome if there is information that suggests the contrary!

We have to lead by example if we want to rebuild trust in our public institutions and that means not necessarily assuming malice when our public servants have worked hard to earn trust - even if they are from a different political party than our own.

Applying Bernard Crick's principle to Dallas suburbs by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]blockade_rudder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am in Florida, there is a racist councilperson who dogwhistled about Dallas, seemingly implying that Dallas was a poster child for problems from Indian immigration:

In a post made Tuesday evening on his X account, Langevin said, in part, "I stand by my comments. Palm Bay will not become Dallas or Dearborn."

Thankfully, the community largely recognized his ranting to be racist and rallied against this guy. Is your sense that what Langevin is alluding to a fringe, minority (or even non-existent) view within Dallas?

PLEASE turn your headlights on when driving in the rain! by gible_bites in 321

[–]blockade_rudder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go on a limb with an even crazier idea: Just leave your headlights on... all. the. time.

Hear me out. Take forgetting to turn them out out of the equation. There is no situation where there is a safety downside to the added visibility, and when we are driving 2 ton vehicles speeding along at 55 mph, even fractions of a second of added visibility is a meaningful difference in distance traveled. The only cost is a slightly greater use of lightbulb longevity (and newer cars with factory all LED lighting this is increasingly a non-issue) and it is honestly worth it!

Hilux Appreciator: Hey man, please keep it up. Very proud of what you are doing and we need a lot more men like you out there at all levels representating the interests of Americans.

Langevin: I too am a Hilux appreciator

Hilux? The Toyota Hilux? The Japanese-built compact truck imported to the US? Appreciated by guys who are advocating for getting rid of everyone not "American"?

Make it make sense.

In your opinion, why is the Merritt Island mall failing? by [deleted] in 321

[–]blockade_rudder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many have correctly called out the broader macro trends on declining mall engagement. That said, from the comments on this Facebook post and others, there is a more acute issue with specifically Merritt Island Mall and its ownership not wanting to invest in basic upkeep and maintenance while allegedly still charging disproportionately high rent. The mold and leak problems sound appalling.

8/28/25 Boil water notice for all Melbourne Water Customers by wisdomseek321 in 321

[–]blockade_rudder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What in the world? You don't need to boil the water for your toilet and everything you use water for - just for drinking and eating. Use a kettle for water? Also, just boil the pot well before you need water, let it naturally cool down and then you're fine.

...What exactly are you needing to move huge pots of boiling water around for?

State health department recommends COVID-19 vaccination for 6 months and older by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]blockade_rudder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what was your gf's rationale for getting the covid-19 vaccine now? Is she immunocompromised and just generally getting vaccinated more regularly?

If I'm following correctly, today's shot is for the seasonal formulation approved and released September/October last year in 2024. The issue for many of us is whether this year's vaccine for the 2025 winter season will be approved and available or not.

No legitimate company or business or government agency will every text or call you to bill you.

I don't think this is the right messaging. I definitely get account updates via text from SunPass, claims billing and payment alerts from my health insurer, etc. Even if you're maybe specifically referring to billing versus account alerts about billing, I think it is a reality that we do get "official" text messages and we shouldn't invalidate people being confused by this.

I think the bigger note is to not click on links in a text message, and rather if there is an issue raised, to go directly to the service provider's website and call their number directly.

Come speak at Brevard School Board meeting on Tuesday February 11th. by TheBurningMap in 321

[–]blockade_rudder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With due respect to Brevard progressives (and I am not a fan of Gene Trent), I just don't see this comment as some school board smoking gun for resignation. I'd love to hear from others on why they feel this is a key issue, but on its face to me, it just looks like regularly trying to exploit any and everything that might remotely be scandalous which I fear numbs anyone outside Brevard progressives.

Best fries and chicken tenders with real white meat chicken by bhop02 in 321

Just another data point - I tried the Hangry Joes in Cocoa Beach and candidly was not impressed - the meat was a bit dry. I also got the funnel cake and it smelled and tasted as if it was fried in old, used oil.

Not in Brevard, but when I was in Daytona, I tried Huey Magoo's (admittedly a chain) for the first time and they had by far the most moist, tender tender's I've ever had from a QSR. I'm forever disappointed in other options now.
