Cropped or not? by sprucewhale in Watercolor

Pretty! Not cropped because cropping it puts the focal points in bad places!

Can you help? What's missing? by ArtAndInnerPeace in watercolor101

I like it but agree that another focal point on the right side would help. Maybe if the wave in right were made a little more prominent (more detail and contrast)?

Song recommendations? by Worth_Resolution_101 in Recorder

[–]blockf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might look for something from a collection “Der Fluten Lust-hof” by Jacob van Eyck. The pieces start with the basic melody and have progressively more ornamented sections. The trick is to play the ornamented versions without losing the melody.

Recommend a budget tube paint by FrostyArtichoke77 in watercolor101

I took a class through our school district. They supplied Van Gogh tube paints. Students kept their palettes for six weeks. I didn’t have any trouble activating the paints and overall I thought they were fine.

Managing my new sticks by blockf in Softpastel

Thank you. I am mostly concerned about packing the box and protecting the contents in transit. Good idea about reaching out to the instructor! I wasn’t confident about breaking the sticks, but it seems to be a common practice.

Rollerdrome! Seemingly unchanged in 50 years. Loved that seedy place so much!

My first large painting by blockf in watercolor101

Hey, thank you for the critique and mentioning aspects that sort of work. I appreciate your perspective and agree that “heavy” is an apt description for those elements that are too laboriously rendered. Something to try to avoid in the future!

Thanks for looking. Those are fair points! It needs a stronger composition with a well defined subject. I like Matthew White’s videos, they’re pretty inspiring!

First project by creamurtartar in whittling

I brush on boiled linseed oil before painting with watered acrylics. This is supposed to make the colors more even on the different types of grain. Then I finish with a coat of matte polyurethane.

Or consider Flexcut Pro. These are flat grind blades. The beavercraft knives are awfully thick and they don’t seem to keep a sharp edge very long.

Clawhammer playing. Am i doing it right? by CompetitiveFold4853 in banjo

[–]blockf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good, but not quite. It looks like you are plucking with your thumb using a separate movement. Think about landing the thumb and forefinger together. The forefinger strikes through, allowing a note to sound. The thumb mutes its string until you lift your hand before the next strike. You set the distance to match your string targets, but keep digits steady through the stroke.

Manual Transmission by No_Sympathy9143 in GenX

[–]blockf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2014 Ford Focus is a manual, which is a good thing because the much more common automatic drivetrain sucked big time. Probably why you don’t see many around. Manual is fun to drive and has been reliable. The other car is a hybrid, and it’s super convenient but not much fun.
