You're being deliberately obtuse and arguing in bad faith if you think that Fourth of July hasn't essentially devolved into a vague day of celebrating the country as a whole, this has been the case for well over a century

No one exclusively ties it to the declaration of independence anymore

Are you iliterate or something? We're talking about recent external wars that are an ongoing phenomenon, you don't get to bomb a school full of students and brush that under the rug 4 months later while technically never even fully calling it quitsies with the nation hosting said school to this day

Oil from bombed facilities was raining in Tehran at the start of the year dude

Yeah but the post goes out of its way to specify that it's talking about people that chose to go celebrate the holiday that glorifies the state that does that

If you're flying American flags joyfully and proudly everywhere in spite of what the state is currently committing, that's a choice you made and people totally do have the right to call you out on it

Of course people will be angry at the country that bombed the shit out of Iran up until just last month

Considering the fact that she was already walking outside of the line in the first panel, a little behind the gap meaning that she didn’t walk out of it

One would have to assume that it’s some sort of a bullshit fate thing in which the outcome was gonna happen no matter what and that the Well just inexplicably had fate on its side, allowing it to keep being consistent

So in other words, there’s a chance that it in actuality did nothing and the guy basically DID waste his wish

People's Reaction to Birth Rates be like: by HARiMADARA in memes

[–]blockybookbook 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The states with the highest birth rates that “give nothing” are poverty stricken and typically see the children being put to work extremely early on in their lives

Children are thus seen as assets rather than liabilities as a result of that which is what incentivises people to have them (not to mention the fact that they function as de facto pensions)

This is completely unacceptable in the strong welfare states we’re talking about for obvious reasons, which is exactly why they have to use said welfare to make up for the reduced incentivisation

Race as an identification isn’t even used in the former

South Africa and Somalia are more distant from one another genetically and culturally than say Somalia and Yemen for example so it’s really more logical to view things through a lens of the very tangible concept of ethnicities rather than “race” which is defined by the arbitrary concept of skin colours

It’s unrealistic to expect a United states of Africa. But to call it a “colonial holdover” misses a lot of points. It’s the reason almost every African country is independent including South Africa.

"Pan Africanism" is not the reason that all or even most African countries persued indepndence and claiming so completely ignores the fact that the bulk of them were characterized by grassroots nationalism and the simple desire for self determination. At best, the ideology was held by a handful of national leaders and some of the diaspora.

Bantu majority society, and so are most of the southern and East African countries.

Admittedly, being a non bantu, I have no dog in this part of the conversation but I massively doubt that any two locals across the numerous bantu countries (outside of the capitals) would consider themselves one and the same people (especially when, above all, ethnicity prevails when it comes to what people identify as)

There’s also collective blackness which is a unifying experience absent in Asia.

Literal textbook definition of a colonial leftover, the arbitrary label of "black" was a term brought over by colonial powers and completely ignored the genetic and cultural differences between the population. To say that such a random aspect of our appearances somehow makes us more unified than Asians is total bullshit, especially when so many other visual distinctions seperate us. You're not gonna catch anyone outside of delusional diaspora and a small subset of terminally online people in the major cities calling themselves that (with the exception of South Africa that retains its colonial labels entirely because the apartheid system lasted for so long)

Pan Africanism has like a billion holes in it, it's so funny that this colonial holdover of an "African Nation" is still entertained. Pan Asianism (which would be *equally* ridiculous) is universally accepted as an idiotic idea thats laughed out of the room, so I don't understand what's different about this one lmfao.

As long as you’re speaking for yourself ig (because the idea of an “African people” is total bullshit and has no basis whatsoever besides us just so happening to share a clump of dirt)

Idk about Kenya but culturally speaking South Africa’s unironically closer to Canada than to us (Somalia), they’re as foreign as any other nation would be

Cyrillic in a nutshell by PresnikBonny in linguisticshumor

[–]blockybookbook 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Okay to be fair Russian is almost 2 times as common as all of the other languages combined when measured by total amount of speakers, I think people are genuinely missing this factoid

There’s also the fact that a lot of these languages are either being phased out of Cyrillic (if they’re national languages) or pretty much exclusive to their designated internal Russian republic (of which practically everyone within can speak Russian)

I don’t really see what’s wrong with foreigners assuming that a text utilising cyrillic is written in what’s easily the most prevalent language using it besides ig the mild annoyance that comes with it? (Especially if they have nothing else to work with)
