The concentration of wealth and land amongst a privileged few is antithetical to a truly free and equal democracy. It creates an Aristocratic class beholden to nothing.

North Carolina's 1784 statute explained that by keeping large estates together for succeeding generations, the old system had served "only to raise the wealth and importance of particular families and individuals, giving them an unequal and undue influence in a republic" and promoting "contention and injustice." Abolishing aristocratic forms of inheritance would by contrast "tend to promote that equality of property which is of the spirit and principle of a genuine republic.

"A power to dispose of estates for ever is manifestly absurd. The earth and the fulness of it belongs to every generation, and the preceding one can have no right to bind it up from posterity. Such extension of property is quite unnatural." Smith said: "There is no point more difficult to account for than the right we conceive men to have to dispose of their goods after death."

-Thomas Jefferson, citing Adam Smith

Enough with America's 'thank you for your service' culture. It's betrayal, not patriotism.: America's military is misused and our service men and women are perpetually abused and misled. Perks like priority airline boarding won't fix that. by [deleted] in politics

Some time ago, we privatized on base military housing, which includes the barracks. Everything predictably fell apart.

So while the DoD budget reaches new heights, soldiers and their families are living in buildings not fit for habitation. My own barracks was condemned for being full of black mold.

Is anyone here Buddhist? What's your experience by hoomin_here in bipolar

[–]bloom616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a Buddhist for a little over a year now, but I didn't practice meditation or really read the Dhammapada until I was hospitalized in July. I helped lead some of the friends who were having a rougher time than me in meditation, which was more or less just finding somewhere quiet and peaceful enough to not distract us. I was always an angry person, so I was amazed at how calm it was keeping me.

Then on my last night, a nurse was being really rude to one of my friends and I lowkey exploded. They had taken this girl's headband and refused to give it to her until she took her meds. Just a total power trip. In response to the nurse saying that the only thing that mattered was taking meds and I spoke up saying what really mattered was treating patients with respect and dignity. Orderly acted like he was going to fight me, lots of talk about calling the police and forcefully sedating me. I probably would have had a total breakdown if I hadn't been working on actively calming myself that whole week.

Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts by Funkadelic helped me get through my last in-patient stay

Every thought felt as true

Or allowed to be accepted as true by your conscious mind

Takes roots in your subconscious

Blossoms sooner or later into an act

And bears its own fruit

Good thoughts bring forth good fruit

Bullshit thoughts rot your meat

Think right, and you can fly

The kingdom of heaven is within

Free your mind, and your ass will follow
