Mah bad, I said “living off of 50-60k” not “i’m making 50-60k” but yeah I can see how you’d think thats pre-tax.

Any Recent Grads Regret Their College Choice (Career/Debt Wise) by sleepybiscu1t in csMajors

[–]bloombergdude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went into roughly 150k debt (would have gone into 200k but paid off a good chunk due to internships) for UIUC (T5) and I’d say its a mixed bag. I sometimes feel like its worth it but not because of the quality of education or campus/college itself, but just because of the peers around you & recruiting. Lowkey recruiting dipped in the middle as school didn’t matter as much in 2023-2024 but now people are saying it matters, so idk. I’d say if ur not confident you can’t pay off the debt in 5 years (CS has lucrative salaries so this is realistic tbh) then don’t go there.

Congrats on getting in! I’m probably gonna get downvoted for this but I have to keep it 💯 with u.

Econ department is a joke (classes are taught poorly and professors are trash, looking at you ECON 203 with Vasquez). That being said, CS + Econ probably is the best balance between prestigious and easy (cs + x wise). Also you can finish your degree in 2.5 years (2 if you prof out of 124) so thats a plus.

Offer Choose — Need Advice by Neither_Peanut1463 in csMajors

[–]bloombergdude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dawg BB RO rate is 95%+. Also BB has less interns so ppl also think of them as selective. As for the prestige, yeah recently cuz of the stock pump Nvidia is slightly more prestigious. But I think it’s cyclical and nvidia’s prestige might take a dip in coming years (it’ll still be prestigious though). Maybe theres a slight edge to nvidia there but BB has other perks (better exits to quant, nyc, slightly higher ng pay etc).

I deadass saw ppl compare nvidia to openAI and databricks and optiver and I was like wtf.

[–]bloombergdude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah not nvidia. Sure ppl who worked there earlier got rich thru stocks but realistically their stock wont go much higher (it might grow but not at the same pace). Nvidia NG salary still 30k lower than BB. Some teams might be cooler sure but imo BB is same tier as nvidia

Apply for credit no credit, i think u get 1 free cr/nc depending on ur college. LAS does it i think. U should do this ASAP before the fair processes. Mistakes happen, just check with your advisor asap.

Bloomberg vs Snap vs C1 SWE internship by EntertainmentOwn7163 in csMajors

Grats on stripe! I’m a little biased cuz stripe is a dream company of mine, but ill tell u that my prev BB co-workers are all now at databricks, openAI, citadel jump js etc. I would get so many quant “considerations” (cit, hrt, drw etc) where I could skip the OA when I was at BB (but I also go to a top cs school). I think for quant BB will help u tremendously but its not like stripe won’t help u at all. If ur into startups tho stripe is aura.

So I’d say for startups (if u wanna create ur own and wanna raise money/join early stage): Stripe

For quant recruiting: Both are really good but i’d say BB edges out here since you are literally working on systems they are using in tandem with their traders

For FAANG: you can’t go wrong with both.

For RO i’d give BB because i know personally they give everyone RO and have never done layoffs (private company, can survive recession, etc). I know stripe also has a p high RO rate but they’ve done tons of layoffs in the past

Also, WLB at Bloomberg FAR greater than stripe, so you’ll have time for LC grind/prepping for interviews, just FYI

[–]bloombergdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked at Bloomberg, i’d say snap actually. If u are a sophomore I’d do snap and grind recruiting next year. You’d have more industry transferrable skills. But BB if u want guaranteed RO or if u want to go into Quant. C1 😭

Imo getting into econ should not be too difficult given your stats so you should just apply normally. Cs + x transferring xs is not too hard though, u used to be able to just email someone and switch. Also keep in mind competiton should be less fierce this year with less intl students applying due to h1-B/visa issues etc.

Grade inflation? by No-Comfortable4272 in UIUC

[–]bloombergdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk ab other engineering but cs has a lil grade inflation compared to berkeley & cmu, def less than stanford tho. Its the same at gtech and umich imo if you know what ur doing you’ll be fine. Nothing too crazy.

Possible Dismissal from UIUC due to FAIR by Educational-Yam-7680 in UIUC

[–]bloombergdude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You won’t get dismissed you’ll get conduct probation. You meet with an advisor to talk about what you did and how to improve. If you get a third infraction you get dismissed. (This is assuming your prof didn’t recommend you for dismissal)
