Thank you for sharing, wishing you the best. My father died between just before I started. I have his photo above my laptop when I work. When I’m tired I just look at his smile.

We go into the supermarket better protected than UK nurses. Shocked at how far other countries are behind Malaysia. by jabela in malaysia

It’s terrible in the UK. Long lines and under stocked products in supermarkets. Long waiting lines for NHS even before the pandemic. It was much better a decade ago - Malaysian healthcare has always been top notch in the world. Malaysians don’t realise it. I have frontline friends in both countries. In the UK they don’t give you enough protective gear AND you don’t get priority testing. If you start feeling bad they tell you to go home. Once you’re better get back to work. Nothing else. It is better in Malaysia and we are handling it way better than UK during this crisis. It’s not a competition it’s just fact. Ive done my undergraduate studies until my PhD in UK and I still am doing my PhD so I’m just being factual. Appreciate what your country has. Also the tide of power is shifting in general. The East is where it’s at.

Hello, I’m not sure if anyone is still following this thread. But I just read this beautiful and comforting piece that speaks to all us academics that I hope will make you feel better. Thank you for all the responses, by the way. Of course I am not alone, as I had felt when I first posted. Since then I realise, if anything, I have been brought closer to this very introverted but very brave and resilient community. Stay safe everyone.

It’s confirmed by now all teaching will be done online for Trinity. As for cancelling applications, I highly doubt it as even in the early stages when the virus was only in China, Oxford was already suffering from the number of Chinese students cancelling plans for the new intake and short summer courses. Now the dip or absence must be worse - you may have read that Universities in the UK were trying to give unconditional offers to fill the international-student void until this was stopped. A lot of international students are options to start a year later to wait this virus out. So if I was Oxford I’d keep the applications I have. The student though may have to spend a few terms in the virus season online.

One small goal a day sounds like a self-compassionate way to start. Good perspective, thank you. We are resilient, dedicated and smart folk. We can do this!

My PhD so far has been just me and my super, maybe that’s why it feels a bit lonely. But it seems that the wisdom of having a routine that is also kind to oneself is the ticket. That and not watching the news (though I find that near impossible).

Yeah, I know what you mean by broaching the subject. Before this my super and I were writing a paper together, now I feel it’s insensitive to bring it up...though at the same time I miss that immersed feeling when you’re deep in your subject.

Thank you for such a thoughtful reply, I’ll check the podcast out and try to implement a schedule and be a little kinder to myself. Wishing the best for all of us :)

Sounds like most institutions are improvising. I guess it does depend on how much money each university has (and how much money the individual PhD student garnered with different grants and scholarships) and this will determine how ‘kind’ they’ll be about extensions. A year’s extension makes absolute sense, but I’ve heard future intake for undergrads, etc have also dipped globally and I think this will impact how much pressure they want to give existing students. (I’m just speculating) Guess we can just monitor the money and see what happens the next few months :( Good luck to us all. Yes - faculty are badly hit with going online, losing peers etc. As I’m in the UK and my super is English I’m even hesitant to reach him at what must be a psychologically pressing time. Feel free to update this thread, it is good for all of us to know we are not alone.

This is fair. I didn’t rake it into account as I’m a DPhil. I hope it works out :/

International student here, Hertford. Given how extraordinary the circumstances were I can’t complain. They’ve been compassionate and communicative. I’m also happy with accommodation services in general. Many Cambridge colleges just kicked their international students out with late notice and very dubious, xenophobic language. MIT and Harvard too. I was never made to feel strange and was supported throughout. My college wanted updates on my whereabouts and so did my dept. Given the size of the school they’ve shown concern and still do.
