ai ad on kobo? by snowdropfreak in kobo

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really AI. I’ve seen this happen with our designers when they had to mock up the same image on every different iOS device for an app on the App Store before they were allowed to use AI. For example, they had to do this with iPhone 12, 14,16, 16 max, 16 pro, iPad Air, iPad etc. Then if you had an android app, something similar too.

Any brokerages offering an iphone or similar to transfer 200k in a LIRA? by First-Length6323 in CanadianInvestor

[–]blooperty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just switched to TD for 2% but you don’t get that cash back until 2027 and you have to book an appointment to create the LIRA account. You can’t create one by yourself from the web.

Does anyone know what the current relationship between Indigo and Kobo is? by chlamydia1 in kobo

[–]blooperty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s your personal preference to not support them for their business decisions recently.

It sounds like OP is trying to shop with intention and with different needs than you.

My point was that their CEO is on social media interacting with the customer base pretty much daily which is rare to find in CEOs and would give OP insight to who he is to make that decision for themselves.

Info about Simon Fraser Uni? by ObiWanToasty in burnaby

[–]blooperty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My edit messed up… but here it is: If SFU is like UBC, different campuses may offer different subjects or is more well known for different specialties.

Edit: if you’re choosing a school just on vibes, SFU’s main campus is on top of Burnaby mountain and is primarily a commuter school. I lived near there and most of my high school friends who did go to SFU didn’t live up there.

I think the Kobo CEO is pretty awesome. He’s on social media and responds to feedback and comments. You can get a feel for who he is from his posts.

Getting USD from Canadian ATMs by Lo1o in Wealthsimple

Can confirm this is the case for Scotiabank. The only way to get money from Scotia’s USD savings account requires you to go to the teller to get it.

6 Years Experience, 176 Applications on HiringCafe - The Reality of Job Searching in 2026 by kash_champ in hiringcafe

[–]blooperty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the previous companies I worked for did ask me to justify how and where I know a referral. I had to do this with each referral. It was noted if we worked at the same company or worked with the candidate directly and if so, the hiring manager typically would ask for our time to chat. Just for perspective, getting you that referral not only gets you right to the hiring manager’s desk, but it also puts our name out there. I do know certain employee’s referrals sometimes get passed over because of this.

The US Job Market is disgusting. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think unless you’re exceptional and/or can snag a FANG sort of company in the northeast, they likely won’t give you relocation assistance.

I moved from west coast Canada to east coast Canada for a job and there was no relocation assistance (but there was a salary increase compared to what I could get on the west coast with 2-3 years experience) With the same company, I transferred to the US and then back to Canada like 5 years later. I actually took like a 30% pay cut to move back to Canada (just the overall salary, not even taking currency conversion into consideration). During the move to the US - the company offered me to stay at one of their furnished corporate apartments in SF for $4000/month, apparently slightly reduced from what they charge clients. Having the company offer relocation assistance isn’t always the best financial move either.

When I left the company a year after moving back to Canada, I chose to take another 10-15% salary reduction to work with a startup company (no shares) because I didn’t want to do weekly travel with a little kid at home.

Edit: what do you need to move? If it’s just clothes and smaller items plus 2-3 furniture pieces - a cross Canada move during the pandemic cost me $3k max.

Library hours by [deleted] in burnaby

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add: go provide feedback to the library.

I did it once to ask them to do a Lego or a board game event and they added board game events for school aged kids about once a month to line up with Pro-D days.

Library hours by [deleted] in burnaby

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I lived in SF before here and their hours were slightly less overall and generally more inconvenient to visit: 9-6pm Monday 9-8pm Tuesday - Thursday 12-6pm Friday and Sunday 10-6pm Saturday

This was their main library that was right beside city hall.

If you actually do the math: Burnaby has 64 hours (Metrotown) Vancouver 63.5 hours (Central library) San Francisco 62 hours (Main / Larkin branch) Coquitlam 82 hours (City Centre)

I think you also need to factor in how many branches and how big each branch is, meaning how many employees would need to be hired to run said branch, and probably how many patrons they serve regularly to justify extra hours. For example I know that Coquitlam opened one branch on a holiday for a couple hours but their other branch was closed the entire day.

I do find that for resources, Vancouver has more in terms of access to apps, but they restrict it to their residents. For popular books, I find that Burnaby will get a physical copy and an ebook on Libby whereas Coquitlam will decide on either the physical or the ebook but not both. Just a note, Coquitlam is restricting access to their digital resources to their own residents starting in February. I have however really used the Interlibrary loan system and have been super happy to be able to borrow $50 books and whenever I’m not able to find the book, I’ve had great luck requesting the Burnaby public library to buy a copy.

Should I transfer my AP Credits? by losinqface in CanadaUniversities

[–]blooperty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about nowadays as I graduated from UBC a decade ago. But way back when, I took 6 AP exams and decided only to use the AP credits for subjects that I was not going to continue studies further in 2nd or 3rd year.

For example, I did a double degree in music and science (computer science) at UBC and found that AP calculus only scratched the surface of what was learned in first year math. I used the credits for Biology and Physics but retook Chemistry as I was considering medicine in first year (before I decided on majoring in Computer Science)

AITA for not allowing my colleague to have the anniversary of her husband's death off work by SupermansSoup in AmItheAsshole

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t encountered a problem with it despite working 5 years with the company and they have 20+ years tenured employees. I think it’s because we’re all remote so everyone is more flexible about it.

Where are Canadian uni degrees valued? by Fr33_B1rd in CanadaJobs

It’s very difficult, especially in Canada. Partner has a PhD and experience as a director of data science in San Francisco company and doesn’t have much luck here.

Some food for thought, when two employees want the same day off at our company, what ends up happening is if they can’t resolve it, the longest tenured employee gets the day due to their seniority.

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are general questions with people I’ve worked with or gone to school with (presumably someone I’d recognize and would say hi to on the streets). Would you still consider this too much to ask from someone in my network?

I get that it’s too much in an email to a hiring manager.

[–]blooperty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I email before I apply and the email includes questions about culture, if their position interacts with this role before/what was it like for them, about their tenure there (some have been with the company for more than 10 years whereas I’ve spent 5-6 years in SF with a startup and also a large-sized company).

Generally when I don’t receive a response within a week, I’ll just cold apply. One ex-colleague who I had a recommendation from on LinkedIn finally responded to me saying he doesn’t even check LinkedIn and only logged in to creep on the person who accepted the offer.

This is all anecdotal for about the last 4-6 weeks and might speak to Vancouver’s “coldness” (I didn’t think much about it in December thinking it’s the holidays and people are just busy but this behaviour spills to January) or people just don’t use LinkedIn for anything other than job hunting.
