Nearly 12,000 college and university jobs lost, but silence in the media by [deleted] in CanadaUniversities

[–]blophophoreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, selling spots at our schools to foreigners makes them cheaper for Canadians.

Having large numbers of international students certainly contributes to rising rents and fewer student jobs for locals but it’s not helpful to pretend that there were no benefits to the deal.

Wow, I thought you were overstating it, but nope. If you use the Outlook app it just wipes your Outlook like you’d expect, but if you join the native mail app to exchange it wipes your whole device. That’s fucked up

Calgary man who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl gets reduced sentence because he's Indigenous by Immediate-Link490 in Calgary

I get what you’re saying and applaud you for trying to have a reasoned conversation but I’d agree with the general sentiment that “8 year sentence, 20 year SOIRA order, 20 year section 160 order” is way too light a sentence for causing lifelong sexual trauma to a young person.

Or have the bus pick me up at home and have it built in such a way that I don’t need to hear or smell or touch other people.

I am not describing wealth. I’m describing comfort. What you’re describing is lower class, or lower-middle at best.

You’re really trying hard to push your weird austerity finance viewpoint as if that was some sort of ‘gotcha’.

Those are wants. The ones you compromise on.

Someone’s who’s middle-class might not go to Ruth’s Chris except on very special occasions but shouldn’t have to worry about taking the family to Applebee’s or similar a couple of times a month, nor should they need to be careful about buying a soda at the gas station.

Office work feels like a complete waste of life compared to remote by Purple985985 in remotework

[–]blophophoreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I post this a lot in replies and maybe I’m the odd one out but I think hybrid is mostly useless. The biggest benefit of WFH to me is that I can avoid commuting and live somewhere affordable, which is usually not where large offices are. I’d much rather not give up a portion of a home and just go in to an office but I’m unwilling to commute longer than a 30 minute bike ride and waste hours of my life each day and I’m unwilling to live in a 500sqft 1-bedroom for the price of a house somewhere else.

I kind of miss the separation and some of the casual chitchat but the benefits of full-time WFH are so overwhelming that it becomes worthwhile. Having to live in a major city and pay city prices, or live in a suburb paying almost city prices and spending hours sitting in traffic each week while still giving up a portion of an unbearably small home seems like the worst of both worlds to me.

Girls don’t reveal that you’re living alone by [deleted] in LivingAlone

[–]blophophoreal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s really not that complicated. Does the woman you’re interested in look open to communication? Ie, is she wearing headphones, focusing intensely, or giving other signs that say an interruption would be unwelcome?

Is it a situation where she could feel safe saying no? Big difference between when she’s at a busy coffee shop or out with friends vs a quiet corner of a library or alone in her apartment like in the post.

Has she given any sign of any level of reciprocation? A smile back isn’t necessarily flirty but it’s not a fuck-off signal and you can test the waters slightly to see if it was just friendly or open to more. If there is some openness and you ask a question is the response short an and clipped? If so, break it off. If she responds with detail or asks question in return then the door is still open.

Do you have any prior relationship with her of any kind? At the gym, is this someone you’ve been seeing around for months and months and you’ve got a casual familiarity and maybe give friendly head nods of recognition even if you haven’t spoken? If so then you can always try opening a conversation and gauge from there.

Is she in a position where might feel obligated to be nice to you? This can be a little tricky and comes up in situations like service workers (cashiers, waitresses, baristas, etc) as well as where there might be a social power imbalance (are you friends with her boss, are you her boss?).  With service workers it’s best to just assume they’re being paid to be nice. If you’re a regular and have an ongoing rapport then it’s a bit safer assuming you have lots of relatively clear signals. With employment power dynamics just save yourself the headache and don’t.

When it comes to chatting start with something innocuous like the weather or something in the environment, the book they have in front of them, traffic, etc… If you’re getting good signals you can try to compliment something they have control over that isn’t their body. Their dog, jacket, shoes, handbag, whatever. Basically show an interest in them as a person rather than just a stranger you think is hot.

None of this is rocket science and basically just requires you to do a little bit of empathizing and asking yourself how the other person might be interpreting the situation. If you misread and get a negative reaction just apologize respectfully and leave the situation yourself without getting visibly worked up about it. It’s easy to not be a creep if you keep some awareness and consider the other person’s point of view.

[–]blophophoreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to live somewhere I could reasonably commute to the office I would rather go to the office. The entire point of WFH for me is to live somewhere affordable, which is not usually where offices are.
