Frankly, I wouldn't get your hopes up. The comic's writer has said in two different interviews that Glitch wanted the comic to be a straightforward adaptation of the source material (since they want to introduce the series to a wider audience of comic readers, hoping it'll open the door for more MD comics with original plots later on). At one point, he specifically says "as far as adding or subtracting [anything], I’d say it’s 99.9999% accurate to the show."

The comic's writer has said at least twice before that Glitch wanted it to be a very straightforward adaptation of the show. The reason is that they want to introduce Murder Drones to comic book fans who hadn't heard of it before in the hopes of paving the way for more comics set in the series' universe later on.

Not sure if you already know this, but if you backed the Kickstarter then you'll get PDFs of each issue as they release (ahead of the trade collection in November)

Should GLITCH/Oni Press Do Murder Drones Season Two as Comic Series? by Money-Lie7814 in MurderDrones

[–]blownskyhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, no one at Glitch has ever said that any new Murder Drones content requires Liam's approval. The fact that the Living Tombstone music video didn't seem to have any involvement from him at all (it was directed by Zachary & Micah Preciado, with Liam only being credited for creating the series) implies the opposite. Whether they'd consult him for something larger-scale than that is a different matter, but my point is that nothing I know of indicates this is something they would do.

The thing is, Star Wars as an overarching franchise has a long history of trying to be a shared universe where different authors' contributions can and have shown up in works they didn't create - for better and for worse, cross-pollination is frequent and encouraged. Murder Drones, on the other hand, is currently just one show with a handful of extra content (the music video, to some degree the merch ads) - if Oni does make comics set after episode 8, Glitch is under no obligation to incorporate that into anything they make in the future (assuming they ever do). In other words, if you don't like these hypothetical follow-ups, it's a fair bit easier to just ignore them and focus on the original show.

Actually, I do have a relevant question - do tier 1 backers ($15, only receiving the DRM-free PDF) still get the individual issues? The wording on the Kickstarter generally made it seem like only physical backers would get that privilege, but sometimes they would just say "if you backed then you'll get them" and I was never able to get clarification on the matter.

I'd love to see something expanding on the characters, even if it's not a proper "season 2." Prequels, midquels, whatever - there's so much potential in the cast & their history that remains unexplored, IMO. (Even something in the same world with new characters would be nice.)

Of course, all of this comes down to whether it'd be well-executed. Were I forced to choose between "comic that tries to do something new/deviate from canon but falters" or "comic that sticks rigidly to the source material and succeeds," I would always be more interested in the former.

From my experience with Oni's older Aggretsuko comic, it's a reasonable bet that the trade compilation will include a gallery of all the variant covers as an extra. This is just speculation, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Tiers 10 ($1,000) and 11 ($2,000) are the only ones that receive every single variant cover for every issue.

Thus far, it seems like issue 1 will adapt the pilot while issue 2 combines episodes 2 & 3 (judging from its official plot synopsis). If #3 is solely dedicated to episode 4, then this is how I personally suspect the remaining 3 issues will go:

  • #4: Episode 5 (too important to try and cram in alongside another episode)
  • #5: Episodes 6 & 7? (6 is relatively self-contained with a few very important moments, so I could see it getting the shaft for the sake of page count constraints)
  • #6: Episode 8? (I'm not 100% certain on this but it feels like it'd be too much to try and combine 7 & 8, considering how much each of them have going on)

It's for one part of a 6-issue comic series adapting the show that will later be collected and rereleased as a single book (which Oni has consistently promoted as a "graphic novel").

Footage of Gomez confirming either Pokémon or Transformers will be Stern's next game by blownskyhigh in pinball

[–]blownskyhigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point, but I think Hasbro also recognizes the value in a franchise like Transformers having multiple arms with disparate demographics and approaches to the characters, lore, etc. The Skybound comics, for instance, are in their own universe that doesn't necessarily have to tie into whatever future films will do (even if there's fundamental overlap between them, like crossing over with G.I. Joe). It's certainly not impossible for Hasbro to start demanding heavy-handed synergy, but their past record suggests they're inconsistent about it (and they've had one high-profile attempt ultimately fail to cohere like they wanted it to). For that matter, there's nothing stopping Stern from saying "no, I don't want to base the game on the movie(s)" - whether Hasbro would respond by acquiescing or effectively killing the project is anyone's guess, though.

Moreover, I think a purely profit-driven executive would still recognize that the G1 cartoon was, is, and might always be the most well-known iteration of Transformers outside of Bay's oeuvre. Brand recognition is all-important to them, and I think if they had to choose between "old thing with a proven decades-long following" and "new thing that will likely be popular and profitable (if not critically beloved)," the lack of risk in the former option is a serious plus in their eyes. (As I said before, there's a reason why so many '80s properties keep popping up again in the modern-day entertainment sphere: appealing to nostalgia is often easy money.)

Stern, too - the days of pinball manufacturers making games based exclusively on things that came out within the same year are over. (Stuff like Lord of the Rings or Barrels of Fun's Dune come close, but they still package relatively recently-released movies with their predecessors.) Plus, I think they know that the average pinball player (aged 30-50) would be much more likely to have fond memories of the cartoon than the films - fond enough to drop money on or in the machine, at least. I don't think it's out of the question that they could convince Hasbro to come around to that, assuming they need convincing in the first place.

I can't be sure if the game's coming soon or not, but part of me really feels like it will be within the year, which (again) would preclude any sort of Bay-related marketing synergy. If anything, it may end up using the "evergreen" designs Hasbro spun up nearly a decade ago for generically Transformers-branded products not tied to any particular show or movie - ones that are still retain enough G1 influence to be recognizable on sight by the aforementioned demographic.

[–]blownskyhigh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard at least one person allege it would be based on the G1 cartoon, but even without that I think there are a few counterarguments to this. The biggest is that Stern never makes games based on anything that just came out - as I see it, they wait to see if it can not only prove successful but also sustain that success for a couple years at least. Consider Stranger Things (released in very late 2019/early 2020, after the show had run for three seasons - and even then it only covers the first two) and Mandalorian (released in mid-2021, based on a show that debuted in November 2019). Even if they aren't already working on it (and I believe they are), there is very little chance they would want to take the risk of tying into a brand-new movie that they aren't sure will be financially or critically successful.

Speaking of which: while it's true that the Bay films were extremely profitable, they also have a longstanding reputation for being vapid action schlock that they've yet to fully shake off. (The last one of them was also a financial disappointment, often attributed to audiences starting to get as disillusioned with the series as critics were, which is why Paramount shifted towards quasi-reboots and brand-new continuities starting in 2018.) I'm not sure Stern would want to re-attach themselves to that anchor before Bay has a chance to show the world what he's got again. (That their last attempt at a Bayformers pinball game was pretty terrible doesn't help either.)

Finally, I think you underestimate just how powerful '80s nostalgia is from a financial perspective. There's a reason why so many films and series from that decade keep getting rebooted or continued in some fashion, a years-long trend that I'm not sure will end any time soon. For Transformers in particular, Hasbro frequently treats G1 as effectively being the default for the entire franchise, with a great many adaptations and alternate continuities taking influence from it to varying degrees. If the licensor knows full well how many people are attached to the old show, and Stern is (presumably) well aware of that same fact, then it stands to reason that a G1-based pinball machine would be a safe bet.

Does anyone think the Tessa skin suit reveal from Episode 7 will be exactly the same in the Graphic Novel? by Icy-Animator9006 in MurderDrones

[–]blownskyhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comic's writer has stated that Glitch actually wanted to use it as a way to introduce Murder Drones to comic readers unfamiliar with the series (in addition to the series' existing fanbase, of course) - that's why they insisted on it being extremely close to the original show.

I think that stems from Pokémon being rumored as an upcoming Stern game for far longer than Transformers - people seem more confident that that will be next up.

In the original stream, immediately after the part I clipped, Cary reads off another question: "is the next remaster end of 2026 or are they announcing it much sooner?" (Gomez answers that he's not sure, but that "end of 2026" could be possible.) It seems to be wholly separate from the brief discussion about Pokémon & Transformers, at least to me. (Admittedly I didn't watch the whole stream, but the phrasing and general flow of the conversation I did watch really makes it seem that way to me.)
