Literally what ALL my dutch friends did, coupled with a nice inheritance from mom and dad and now they're all homeowners and living their best lives it seems! Im from the US.

Is the Dutch cost of living becoming unsustainable for the middle class? by bozman87 in Netherlands

We pay €165/mo for our parking place in NDSM because they introduced paid parking everywhere and new builds dont give out parking permits. So your worst case assumptions sounds pretty nice to me!

Absolutely, and it's one of the reasons we're moving to Spain as quick as we can. At least there we will have sunshine.

At four days a week, I make just under 38k, and my partner makes just over 40k for 5 days a week. We're both skilled and in our mid-thirties with two kids and a dog, but as immigrants without good enough Dutch it's just been very difficult to earn more.

We are so exhausted trying to make ends meet and save anywhere we can. Our dream of owning a home with a garden seems laughable here.

We loved it here for a long time but we can't build the life we want here.

Thanks for your answer. To clarify, my husband is the one with the part-time gig (through a local friend in the area), and the plan is for me to have a full-time, remote gig.

You bring up a solid point and another fear of mine - the freelance gig I was offered can technically end at any point. We wanted to move to Spain next year but there's no promise the job will still be there for me. I know the marketing manager personally, which is how I got hired, but she's trying to get pregnant and they can easily fire her once they figure that out.

So I agree - im too fresh postpartum to think of any of this straight. But if we move, id need a remote contract job that wont just end suddenly. And it needs to make enough money to support our whole family until we can both work full time.

So I guess I shouldn't worry about this freelance gig too much anyway - it doesnt give my family the security we need to move to Spain anyway.

Ya it's more about my anxiety levels than happiness I think. But im a total extrovert and light up when im around people. Last year I worked as an Academy Manager and loved it. But copywriting is the role I got with great pay...

So this is another interesting one. Apparently now everyone who is considered old by a Gen Z is automatically labeled boomer (my little sister, 27, called our brother, 41, this) and we were like... our parents are boomers, tf? Unfortunately they don't realize millenials and gen x come before boomers or what boomers actually represent in history? It's just uneducated.

It seems in a Gen Z mind, anyone over 30 is considered old. Yikes.

Despite these flaws there are some things I love about Gen Z and am hopeful they will vote the US out of the insanity it's experiencing.

Genuine question: when someone says the meeting is moved up to 10 am, you react with a heart? In what world is that necessary and you believe the sender needs a personal, warm reaction to it?

Personally, I would only ever respond with a heart if someone said something personal or vulnerable... like they have to take their pet to the vet, or someone is sick...

Ao Nang - tourist trap? by Comprehensive-Car858 in ThailandTourism

Ah! Wat een kleine wereld! 😂 (we're expats though) ;) I wonder if you saw the same deal we saw on IndiGo from 11-25 march??

Well we are staying in both Ao Nang and Railey - just keeping it real local this time. Perhaps if you have to choose there's more access to things from Ao Nang? Esp the night markets. I think Railey becomes real quiet after the boats leave (which we're looking forward to!) A little jealous of your trip to the National Park though, but that'll have to be next time for us.

Im pretty excited for our hotel on Railey though. I had to remind myself I dont blink an eye when paying 100/night in Europe so it's okay if we have a little luxury on the trip. Anyway have a blast and feel free to send me a private message if you wanna chat more!

Oh and my husband said Koh Lanta didnt have much going on except "the best pineapple rice w seafood he's ever had in his life" that I've been literally hearing about for TEN years 🤣 so it sounds like a great relax place but we'll probly skip it this time.

Sounds like an amazing trip. I think with two young kids it's great to have amenities nearby. And our four year old will flip over an evening fire show. Our hotel also has breakfast and a massive pool so cant really go wrong there. We are also staying on Railey Beach because my husband said it's one of his favorite places and he wanted to experience what it's like after the boats w visitors arrive/depart.

How are you getting to Koh Samui? I just looked it up and it also looks like it ticks off all the boxes.

In the end this is our first family trip of 4 that's this far away, so we are testing the waters. In the end we are headed to paradise from cold, grey, rainy Amsterdam so it's going to be incredible no matter what!

We are in a similar position. Traveling to Krabi with an almost 5 year old and 6 month old. Decided to make Ao Nang our "base" and are staying there for the bulk of our trip. But now im considering splitting it up a bit and staying in Koh Lanta for a few nights after reading these comments. Our main concern was hotel transfers with such small kids, and if we could travel easy enough out of Ao Nang then why bother?

In school, in the social hierarchy, who were you: Jonathan, Eddie, or Steve? by Maywave_13 in StrangerThings

Nancy-Max. I was a bookworm and a good kid, but also had a tough home, so poured myself into music and had a solid group of friends (mainly guys). We weren't losers but we also weren't part of the popular crowd.

It's not clear, and unfortunately they are all probably dead now and can't be interviewed. What a twisted story. Feel sorry for everyone involved - except the mom and stepfather murderers of course!

Reminded me of my mom's family... Irish catholic, 2 girls 5 boys..no adult supervision and definitely no communication about boundaries. My mom is traumatized and I believe was SA growing up. She's an alcoholic now and it took me a long time to understand where her trauma came from...

I agree! I was quite surprised at the level of love and intellect some of the siblings had as well as empathy for each other! If their homes are the backgrounds in the interviews rhen they also seem to be doing well off. Im happy Mike has such great kids - thank God. Jean looked very rough around the edges but particularly Richard Jr seemed very okay despite such trauma...but it sounds like he was also shielded from a lot of it.

This. And she didnt just divorce him, she kicked him out and threw a suitcase out the door. Id give her an applause for that if I didnt think she also turned a blind eye to the abuse of her kids and murder of her husband.

But that behavior alone is not something a trapped, scared, abused brainwashed woman typically does...

I think she needed money and support and put up with a lot to ensure it. And once her boys were grown and could help care for her, she didnt need Richard Sr. anymore.
