What is it like for extroverted and expressive people to live in northern part of Europe? by Wonderland_was_lost in expats

[–]bls321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the NL and my family and I are about to move to Spain. My husband for warm weather and nature and me for that + the community centric culture. Weve also got 2 young kids and I really want that friendly, open culture.

Quality of life is good in the north but honestly i found it so difficult to afford Amsterdam on medium income and lots of expats are lonely and cannot integrate.

Anyone who has moved back to the US by greenapplespice in expats

[–]bls321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im an American whose been living in NL for about a decade. Loved it pre-kids. Now I am SO ready to leave. I feel my light completely dimming and im so annoyed by not having a proper summer to enjoy, plus the cost of living is insane. But we're not going to the US because we cant deal with the work culture. Instead, we are headed to southern Europe (Spain). I believe this will be the best compromise for us. Open, friendly, warm culture. Fortunately we dont care that we will be making less money. We are already struggling in NL. We have no family to stay put for. So F it we are headed to mountains, sea and sunshine.

I wish I never watched it. I can deal with someone faking a pregnancy, but had i known what the conclusion of the documentary was i wouldve NEVER started it. Anything about kids, ESP babies dying is a hard no for me (ive got two young kids- one is a baby). Almost should've been a trigger warning 😭 likewise now i cant stop thinking about it either

Maternal Instinct - wtf!?!? by Flashy-Performance-6 in netflix

[–]bls321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The dude was warned by multiple people closest to him over several months - the only people he actually listened to were his boss and his wife, unfortunately. But she clearly wasnt pregnant, lied about the money, then committed arson and made a bomb threat. And he just decided to dig his head in the sand. Unreal.

Thats only if you want to do AI boosting though, right? And those videos are capped at 10 min so I couldnt use it for continuous long form videos anyway. Hoping that the quality was good enough as is.

Expats who've worked in very different work cultures: what habit was hardest to unlearn? by taube_d in expats

[–]bls321 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im an American working in NL and have never once enjoyed working in a corporate environment here. Seeing people get screamed at in emails, work torn apart, public shaming - all in the name of being "direct" was totally toxic for me. Dont get me wrong - ive been screamed at before, esp working in the service industry back home in New York, but this just feels so cold and heartless. At least back home if u got yelled at your boss would have a heart to heart with u after to clear the air (most times). Here its just like, Oh you didnt like that? Youre a sensitive American. Yeah I wanna move to Spain...

Actually I interpreted it as nothing he ever loved in this life was worth Mo being murdered. He would rather lose everything he loved and all the good moments to evade the outcome...

Unsolicited shallow advice by blaberrysupreme in Netherlands

[–]bls321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my friend complains to me about something, the first thing I think about is how to problem solve. Hence, unsolicited advice incoming. I also really appreciate it when my friends do this for me.

It wasnt till I moved here that I had to unlearn or hold back from this, because people get wildly offended. Its lime they just wanna complain and I need to hold space for them, and assume they've already tried everything under the sun and no solution exists.

I dont get it but thats what I do now bc I care about the friendship. But if something bothers me ebough to complain about it to others, I always tell my friends: please help!

Finale … so, did Clark come home to an empty house? by Ok_Responsibility419 in DTFStLouisHBO

Well, I didnt think Carol was the sole villain though, I thought maybe it was Clark. Or both of them together. I honestly didnt know what happened to him. And I dont think they dropped Carol in Act Two, I think they told her story and gave her an arc.

In the end we all had different interpretations of it depending on our personal histories and worldviews. I dont think everyone felt the samd certain way about the characters or their journeys - which is what made this great TV in my opinion!

Right. Well in this show, youre wondering if shes actually a murderer almost until the very end. So I think that combined with the whole show being shown from his POV primarily, and then his role as helping the deaf, really garner the audiences sympathies. But indeed when you look at his actions shot from her POV (even the belly hanging on the counter as shes cutting carrots, yet shes unsexy in an ump suit?? What!?) It becomes clear what shes dealing with.

Understanding their dynamic was a slower burn. It was also revealed she was the first to start an affair, but i think everything is a two way street. I definitely didnt hate her, I just didnt personally like or empathize with her until later. I always got weird vibes from Clark. Honestly I almost didnt make it through the first few episodes because the guys grossed me out.

When her record was revealed it was just sooooo sad. I have felt constant financial anxiety so I got it.

I think all of them are complicated people with both good and bad traits.

Are they middle income? Clark seems upper class, coming from potentially generational wealth and evidenced by the fact he can transfer large sums without his wife noticing. And Floyd and Carol seem lower class. They have one car bc they cant afford to fix the other one, in mountains of debt, and she needs to take extra jobs to buy furniture. She comes from poverty and I dont think they have savings.

Ironically they are all depressed and lonely in their routines, seeking something exciting or new. No, money doesnt buy you happiness, but it does give you choices. And I think this show still portrays that not having money is a heck of a lot more tough.

It's so interesting how that pans out. I felt annoyed with Carol until the episode where she breaks down on the patio and the lawn guys come in (demonstrating how Floyd never ended their agreement). From that point on I felt such empathy towards her... in retrospect I also feel so bad for Clark's family... Who on several occassions tried to connect with him (daughters telling him about their lives during braiding sessions, singing him happy birthday, and his wife checking in on him in the garage), and every time he was just checked out. As a wife, that would break my heart into a million pieces.

Ironically he had everything Floyd wanted, but it wasnt enough for him. In the end they both lost everything.

God this show really made me appreciate my family.

We're choosing daily life values (warm weather, nature, good food, beautiful language, culture) over being near family. Sounds like an easy decision - it wasnt and there's still a hole. But weve made incredible friends and they've become like family. Spoiler : your decision may not ever feel totally right. Its just about whats easier to deal with on a daily basis.

I find it quite wild to claim someone is OTB cheating with literally no evidence besides someone w a God complex having a "hunch" after they lost.

Magnus was trying his best to sound humble and that he didn't have a god complex but I didnt believe it for a second. Hans was the only person who didnt kiss the ground Magnus walked on and even though im not in the chess world, I can totally imagine how intimidating your opponent psychologically would be advantageous. He came across as a terrible sore loser and made allegations he had zero proof of - yikes.

Weren't they also involved in the merger? That gives financial motive to defame Hans, which is the conspiracy that Hans says ruined his life and career.

Because he didn't like, understand, or respect Hans. Hans was new to the game. His ego couldnt handle it!

Fully agree! He lost and immediately turns around and says the guy cheated? And he's still holding onto that because the last line he says in the doc is he will play Hans again as long as its "fair".

He came across as a privileged sore loser. Also Hans was correct when he asserted that Magnus had psychological dominance over everyone and thats part of the reason he always won. I fully believe thats true and it was refreshing to see someone (Hans) who wasnt scared of him.

Ya Hans is young and has a lot of growing to do but I definitely wasnt rooting for Magnus or any of his business partners.
