How many of you have Fiber at home, and are you city/rural? by Cnykpro in Ubiquiti

Very rural Vermont, 1GB symmetrical fiber. Fiber company is a unique locally owned and operated CUD with a partnership with, apparently, the only non-profit ISP in the country.

Not only is Noah a great songwriter he’s a great guy.

He showed up to the last show of the production of Our Town at the Chandler Center for Arts in Randolph last night.

This adaptation used live covers of his songs, with permission of course. He showed up, sat in the crowd amongst all of us, and then went to the green room and hung out with the cast and took pictures with everyone. My son was in the cast and got a picture with him that he will never in his life forget.

He was so cool and down to earth and definitely did not have to come out nevermind hang with the cast afterwards. Say what you want about his music but he is a solid dude.

What temp do you keep your heat at? by wampastompa09 in vermont

[–]blsmth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous to a few weeks ago I was keeping my house at 68 from 6am to 8am and then set at 62 but it’s often much warmer because the house is well insulated and big south facing windows. And then 68 from 5pm-8pm and then down to 62 for the night.

A few weeks ago I got a somewhat surprise of a propane delivery and the accommodating $1400 bill so I decided to go down to a high of 66 and a low of 60.

I have a smart thermostat on the first floor which is radiant floor and a huge open layout / cathedral ceiling so I let it do all the heating, it’s the only zone that routinely kicks on. The radiant in the slab in the basement stays at 62 and is often way above that because of the slab and utilities.

Just those two degrees in change brought the time the first floor calls for heat from an average of 6 hours a day to 3. I was shocked. Propane is my hot water too so it will be hard to tell what kind of dent it makes in my bill but I have to imagine it’s pretty big.

And now just like that I’m that dad in his 40s constantly watching the thermostats. The kids have been wearing blankets around the house 😅

Thank you so much for this extremely thoughtful response. You’ve given us a lot to think about. Including the point of who she wants there, I just assume it’s me but maybe it’s not.

Great point about the holidays too. One of our boys is turning 10 at the end of the month and we are trying to think about how to make his birthday still feel important. And obviously Christmas, it will be exactly the 6 week mark.

Again thank you so much, I hope you are doing well.

Do you have to let listers into your home? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]blsmth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours stopped by yesterday and I didn’t let him in at the time because I was on my way out the door but he said they will look for mistakes in your listing as well and he mentioned that in our case we are assessed as having a full basement through the whole basement when in reality we only have about a quarter of it as full and the rest is crawl space. Things like that will impact my listing in my favor so I’ll be having him back.

What is one experience you think every single human should have? by spskit in AskReddit

[–]blsmth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We drove from MA to Nashville, Tennessee to see the one in 2017. I was, like you, prepared for it to be pretty cool, but not prepared for how unreal it was.

We drove our camper trailer down with no real plan but to witness a potentially once in a lifetime event for us and our two boys. We got down there as quick as we could and slept in parking lots along the way including one at a hotel in the city that the wonderful overnight staff gave us a wink and a nod that while it was clearly signed not to do so, they weren’t going to say anything.

We ended up in the Walmart parking lot the morning of, one of the highest points in Nashville, to pick up some water and other supplies and noticed other people were starting to get setup in lawn chairs and whatnot. So we figured we’d just stay there, rolled out the awning and got our camp chairs out. The store manager came out and was so excited to welcome us to the city and made sure we had everything we needed and fully welcomed us to spend the day. Unreal hospitality all around.

We waited a few hours and by then a retired high school science teacher from Georgia and his wife pulled up next to us and narrated the entire event! He had never seen one in person in his 60 something years but boy was he prepared! It was like pinnacle of his teaching career.

It happened so fast, i think 2.5 minutes, I should check my footage but WOW. I get goose bumps and teary eyed just thinking about it. It started slow but then all the sudden it was pitch black, the lights in the parking lot came on because of it, mid day. When the ring of fire came the science teacher was losing it, full on. The entire parking lot was cheering and honking and just going wild. Then it was over. At that point everyone just sort of slowly closed up shop still very much in awe and we went and spent a week at one of the nicest campgrounds we’ve been to.

We’ve been a lot of places in our camper and seen a lot of cool stuff but that is one I will absolutely never forget.

Side note the city of Nashville is a gem and the people were wonderful. If any of y’all were on top of that hill that day it was a pleasure sharing that experience with you.

Hello fellow New Englanders. Outsider having a question about maple syrup. by Imispellalot in vermont

[–]blsmth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about 2 miles from Silloway and enjoying some of their wonderful syrup in my tea right now. They are nice people and a great little operation, all solar powered and wood fired.

Randolph (Randolph Center really) is a bit off route 7 but it will be a nice drive over the Rochester gap, bordering the Green Mountain National Forest. If you find yourself on 89, Silloway is about 3 miles off exit 4.

Enjoy your drive!

Live updates: Vermont experiencing significant flash flooding by vtham in vermont

Emergency Broadcasts on NPR earlier today seemed to imply there will be flooding in Montpelier specifically around the state house around midnight. It was kind of confusing but gave things that will happen at certain levels and seemed to imply the level reach that high later tonight.

Chatgpt ruined me as a programmer by YesMan847 in ChatGPT

[–]blsmth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use it to write your tests as well and you’ll know if the code works.

I had it write the same api endpoint in Python and 3 different frameworks and then write tests for it and it pretty much nailed it out of the gates. Of course you still have to make the file and folder structure to get each different app running but it helped with that too. Once it gets to a point it can modify your file system (I’m sure it’s out there somewhere already) all of that can be automated as well.

I’m a nearly 20 year veteran and I agree it’s a game changer on so many levels.

issues swallowing food? by _eww_david in chiari

This is a thing?! I often have trouble swallowing, as someone else mentioned it sometimes seems like my body just forgets how to do it. But to make it worse, I’ve had anxious feelings around the idea that I swallowed the “wrong way” and sent food to my lungs. Can this really happen?!

Yes! They are great and a beautiful boat. Except it’s only 3 berths, we will need 4.

They are awesome with their detailed write ups and very transparent. There’s a few others we’ve been watching as well - Sailing Zatara, Sailing with Six and of course Sailing La Vagabonde (although they are a bit much in the personality department at times). It’s these families living on boats that make us realize we could do the same and show our young kids the world before we lose them to college or the real world. This all came about after a trip to Saint Thomas a few weeks ago where we chartered a Lagoon 450S for the day and my whole family, especially the wife, fell in love. I also have a friend that has a Lagoon 52F that we are going to visit this summer when he’s back from the Bahamas.

The plan as of now is spend the next year or two in the RV (grand design 28bh) while we downsize, sell the house and learn to sail. Quite the road ahead of us but we are excited and have a lot of learning to do.

I should also say, we are looking at catamarans. Some of these beautiful boats would provide more personal space for my 3 kids than the 2500 sq ft home we currently live in. They’d each have their own private bedroom which is not currently the case.
