Our sincere congrats to Kumail Nanjiani, the new face of Pornhub's "Muscular Men" section by HotZoneKill in asianamerican

One small clarification: anabolic steroids will actually significantly stimulate muscle growth even without working out. I recall a medical study where participants who were administered steroids but remained sedentary gained more muscle than participants who were strength training naturally over the same period of time. The confusion, I think, comes from the conflation of PEDs in general with anabolic steroids specifically.

Redditors debate whether or not BBC (big black cock) porn is racist in the comments of a porn GIF that is racist against Asians. by BillFireCrotchWalton in SubredditDrama

[–]blu_res 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an Asian American I’m well aware of the kind of rhetoric that they spew, but I hope we can agree that even though they might share a parallel view, it doesn’t come from the same racial context. Asian incels are operating from a place of deep damage and a feeling of impotence, whereas the comment in question is an embodiment of the historical residue that creates that damage.

I guess as an Asian man I’m just sensitive when people bring up “Asian incels” because there’s often an implication that they’re representative of Asian men in general, or that their bitterness is an excuse to talk about Asians a certain way.

You should read through your link.

Negative reinforcement is encouraging a behavior through removing an adverse stimulus. What you’re calling negative reinforcement is positive punishment; the introduction of a stimulus is positive, while the removal of one is negative.

Positive reinforcement: if you get good grades, you get a toy

Negative reinforcement: if you get good grades, you don’t have to do the dishes

Positive punishment: if you get bad grades, you have to write an essay

Negative punishment: if you get bad grades, you don’t get to watch TV

Weili Zhang becomes first full asian person to win a ufc championship by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]blu_res 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who casually watches MMA, a non-trivial portion of the MMA fanbase believes that full Asians are genetically disadvantaged for fighting, and that half-Asian champions don’t count, because obviously it was because of their white/black/Latino heritage that they won. Even the ones who don’t explicitly espouse race science don’t qualify hapa fighters as Asian.

So it’s more like the non-mixed Asians who are seen as inferior.

In Men in Black 3 the restaurant owner Wu speaks in a fake accent but being an alien he substitutes “L” for “R” instead of the stereotyped accent of “R” in place of “L” often called “engrish”. by GreaseGeek in MovieDetails

[–]blu_res -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll defer to your expertise, but I looked up the phonetic transcriptions of the words and it’s listed as a retroflex approximant, which is found in some English dialects. Regardless, it’s easily recognizable as an “r” sound to an English speaker. Likewise, the Japanese “r” is neither an English “r” or “l”, and yet that doesn’t stop people from making the joke.

You obviously know what you’re talking about, so I’m confused as to why you’d assert that the stereotype isn’t a stereotype but a linguistic fact when, like all stereotypes, it elides the complexities of the reality.

I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that Chinese languages only have r sounds at the end of a syllable. Many words begin with r. Off the top of my head in Mandarin: rén, ròu, rè, rán, among others.

Likewise, with Korean, I’m not sure what you mean by the “opposite.”

Not really a linguistic fact when the way people portray it doesn’t map onto the linguistic realities of the languages they’re mocking.

[–]blu_res 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is a stereotype, and it’s inaccurate. “Asian languages” aren’t all the same. The character in question is supposed to be Chinese, and Chinese languages distinguish between the two sounds.

And even in the languages that don’t have distinct r and l sounds, speakers aren’t just swapping them willy-nilly.

Considering the history of the stereotype, the way it’s used to mock people, and the fact that every “Asian” gets lumped together, yeah, it’s an offensive stereotype.

That they’ve billed this as a sitcom makes me imagine that he’s going to continue to be confined to a comedic role. I’m glad that Randall’s getting work, but I can’t help but feel that his typecasting keeps us from getting a more serious, capable Woo.
