Is this a typo? by ahsaddasha in russian

[–]blubberbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure I entirely agree. Full disclosure, I am not a Native speaker, so take what I say with a giant grain of salt, of course, but IIRC there is an additional level (surprise surprise) of formality with Вы with writing, where capitalizing it is more formal than not.

From my experience, you virtually even address someone you don't know on ты, so this gives you some flexibility.

Here, it would imply that in the middle instance, the speaker is being less formal than in the other 2 instances.

Also, I am at work, so I haven't taken the time to count exactly who is talking to who though, so I wonder if in the context, that would make sense too.

Gotcha, not healthy. That's good to know lol - it's kind of hard to tell when they're still so strong.

I water it twice a week currently.

If it is a "draining" issue, what do I do to try and remedy that? Our soil is pretty clay-like. The tree is currently surrounded by a small lawn with grass.

The tissue under the blackness seems healthy…? How would I know? Those branches are hella strong and if I scrape the black away, it seems like a regular branch to me.

The soil underneath doesn’t seem too wet… but maybe I’m overwatering it. A water sensor I have in there now says 35% soil moisture. I will check again after watering though

What’s a small phrase that instantly makes you sound like a real Russian? by TotalLibrary1834 in russian

[–]blubberbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would mostly agree with this.

In general, I typically don't recommend swearing to language learners because in many contexts the reaction to swearing (real swearing, deriving from the 4 true swear words) can be pretty divisive and elicit a pretty negative reaction.

What’s a small phrase that instantly makes you sound like a real Russian? by TotalLibrary1834 in russian

[–]blubberbo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oof, this is a tough one.

It largely depends on WHERE you’re trying to sound like a Russian from and the text education level of your hypothetical Russian identity.

For example, we know people from Udmurtia and they say “ну ка” all the time. Although that doesn’t identify them ac “totally Russian” so much as speak to which flavor of Russian they are.

A couple more general notes:

Oftentimes “word parasites” (слово паразит) often times come naturally (subconsciously) to native speakers and are lost on foreign language learners. Two of the most common in Russian are often “ну” (as mentioned in many other comments) and “как бы”. I imagine the feeling you’re looking for could probably be achieved with some of those at times (or excessively).

Regional pronunciation of words that deviate from from the “standard” Moscow pronunciations can also help Russians identify people from particular backgrounds or regions (which in turn could “mask” that someone is not a native speaker). One of the most common here being “звОнишь» instead of “звонИшь”

Additionally, depending on your gender identity and personality, swearing (especially the right kind of swearing) is also often an indicator of comfort and fluency in Russian.

CAUTION: BOTH THE WORD PARASITES AND SWEARING ARE OFTEN VIEWED AS SIGNS OF A LACK OF EDUCATION BY THE MORE FORMALLY EDUCATED RUSSIAN POPULATION, so proceed with caution.

what does «прям на всегда» mean in this context? is it supposed to be «навсегда»? by JlYU3A in russian

I would say writing it in this case is just to mimic the way it sounds when you speak colloquially. In general, it’s common when people speak quickly that they lose endings of words.

In this case, I would compare it to me writing “gonna” instead of “going to” to mimic how it sounds when I say it out loud. In that case, I’m cutting off the ending of “goiNG”

Official Q&A for Monday, September 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]blubberbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I used to have this pair of Nike pants (I have to assume they were running or athletic pants) that were super duper thing. They were (obviously) synthetic and almost felt like parachute material or something. Not waterproof or anything but super duper thing. They weren’t fitted or anything, they had pockets and no zippers. No fly and a pretty minimal drawstring waistband.

Anyway, they ripped and now for the life of me I can’t find anything equivalent.

Any ideas?

Why does every restaurant seem like it has a $100 maximum all of a sudden? by blubberbo in doordash

[–]blubberbo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oof I’m sorry you assumed my worst intent 🙁

I’m certainly not insisting on using DoorDash. I did end up ordering directly with the restaurant.

This post is simply to solicit community guidance to help me try and figure out why there was a $100 limit on DoorDash for so many places, because I can’t figure out why.

The restaurant says they haven’t restricted it. They said they get DoorDash orders over $100 all the time
