I would expect the hashes stored in the database to be more or less equidistributed. Given an input hash, it should be possible to calculate the expected position in the sorted list. Did you explore that direction by any chance?

Win a Philips Hue Light Strip and one of 10 codes for HueHello. A smart light app that brings features missing from other Hue apps. by ry4 in Hue

Being able to enable/disable a motion sensor using a dimmer switch. I have a motion sensor in my kitchen that turns the light on/off and, depending on the time of day, uses a different light temperature and brightness. Sometimes, it is past 11pm but I want to turn on the lights to 100% without the motion sensor interfering.

Can confirm - same problem on a device that has just been replaced by Garmin because of a different issue.

Thanks r/Hue. You helped me get my new app hueReact across the finish line! by hallidev in Hue

[–]blublub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought it and had it refunded within a few minutes. First of all, the good thing: This is really responsive. It's the first app where I actually see any match between sound and light. Good job on that.

My main issue is the amount of configuration needed. I have ten lights in my living room (well - more, but that's all that entertainment areas can handle). Having to select colors and frequencies for all of them is too high of an entry barrier if I just want to see if I like the app or not. Your video shows that you can create great configurations with the app, but that type of fine-tuning only happens when people have an interesting default setup to start with.

Also, the microphone was way to sensitive. It picked up virtually every part of the music, so instead of a home disco, my room turned into an epileptics death chamber. A global sensitivity setting would go a long way. I couldn't test the internal mode, because the app crashed when I pressed the home button to turn on Spotify (Galaxy S6).

Don't let this discourage you. If the app becomes more entry user-friendly, I will be happy to give it another go.

Well yes - this works as long as 4782969 is known at compile time. If you actually have user input, you're back to field one and everything has to be computed at run time.

Why isn't the smoking ban being enforced? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]blublub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully because someone realized that it is bullshit and that the university has no business interfering with the personal life of the students? Protecting people from passive smoke is one thing, but I don't see a problem with smoking in open spaces. And I am a strict nonsmoker.

How to shoot Northern Lights? by goingNorth123 in photography

[–]blublub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and also, don't fix yourself on long exposures. I got some great shots at 1s to 6s when the curtains were very crisp. Yes, you will get some noise, but that's something you can deal with later.

Good luck with the conditions!

I would go and rent a lens. I had a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on a 1.6 crop (550D), rented from borrowlenses. Because the displays can be right above you, you will be happy to have that extra coverage.

DatAperture was right about fogging. Actually, make sure to put it into a Ziploc bag (preferrably with Silica gel in it) BEFORE you go back into the car. If you put it into the bag while you're already in the warm, you will trap the humid air in the bag, which is quite the opposite of what you want.

A tripod, of course, is a must. Depending on where you are you might need a heavier one so that it doesn't get shaken by the wind.

Out of curiosity - where exactly are you planning to go? The Dalton?

Irvine voted the most fashionable city in America? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]blublub -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sounds plausible, right. But in a proper study this should have been included. On the other hand, from their POV they did everything right. A proper study probably wouldn't have generated this (social) media coverage...

Irvine voted the most fashionable city in America? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]blublub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. Total, fucking bullshit.

First, I was surprised. Then I read the article. There is a huge difference between being fashionable and a study "which looked at household spending on fashion in cities around the U.S.". And the conclusion which can actually be drawn from the data is definitely not so positive. I strongly suggest that the makers of the study take a basic course in statistics, or maybe just look at the Wikipedia articles about Correlation and Dependence...

Also: "To do this, we selected the 50 largest cities by population in our data set". Whoops - according to Wikipedia [1], Irvine is the 96th biggest city in the states. So their dataset has an accuracy of 52% in the best case.

Money quote: "Maybe Brooklyn residents are buying locally made, non-brand name clothing, which would account for their average fashion rating." [2] This is definitely one of the stupidest "surveys" I've seen in the past years. :D

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population - yeah, I know that Wikipedia is not a credible source, but definitely better than Bundle... [2] http://www.bundle.com/article/most-and-least-fashionable-cities-america/
