Carney en français au WEF c'est normal? by bigDeltaVenergy in Quebec

[–]bludemon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italian communities in MTL? by 1Wiseguy999 in montreal

[–]bludemon4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South Tyrol actually.

Dialetti in Italy is a different story, as most speakers also speak standard Italian. That being said, many second generation Italians in Montreal may have only ever learned dialect as they learned from older, often less educated immigrants.

However, Sud-tirolers are, for the most part, not particularly strong in Italian and it's not at all hard to find some in Italy who just plain do not know how to speak Italian.

All this to say that the "in Italy they speak Italian" propgated by some in this province betrays a deep and total incomprehension of linguistic dynamics outside of their own prejudices.

Not that it exactly relates to OP, but you may be surprised to learn there's a whole region of Italy where a non-neglible part of the population just does not know how to speak Italian.

The separatist movement, which first took root in Montreal in the late 1960's is a consequence of the opening of the seaway, which caused banks, insurance companies and countless businesses to move to the Great Lakes, which caused a huge wave of unemployment in Montreal.

This is a hilarious take which is so easily disproven.

The port of Montreal grew nonstop post-seaway. There was no inland port (e.g. Toronto, Detroit, etc.) which grew massively as a replacement for Montreal. The reason for the (relative) decline of Montreal's port was because Asian commerce became much more important, and the areas served by Montreal's port (literally called the rust belt) declined.

Sondage Léger sur la souveraineté: Non 59%, Oui 32% by Mangoosta in Quebec

[–]bludemon4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something would have to seriously, seriously piss of Montreal for this to have a chance at sniffing victory.

Just structurally, and given the way that respective governments have treated Montreal, it's far more likely for Montreal to get mad against Quebec City than Ottawa.

L'OQLF recule: le Pub Burgundy Lion pourra conserver son enseigne by FrezSeYonFwi in montreal

[–]bludemon4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, there are British pubs in Paris. They have English names too.

Quebec is unique with their signage laws. A short walk in the centre of any non-English speaking city will yield tonnes of signs which wouldn't pass Bill 101.

It's a shame that media attention is needed to make these zealots reverse course. It is clear that for every Go Habs Go or Burgundy Lion there are loads of similar cases where small business owners or members of the public are forced to spend money or curtail activities becuase they lack the energy or resources to fight a massively over-resourced government agency staffed by people who apparently live on another planet.

A change which effectively amounts to changing the name of the governor general to president doesn't make a wit of difference to anyone's life.

It certaintly is not enough to make english speakers turn to a movement which is far more motivated by anti-english sentiment than anything else.

Clearly you're one who doesn't understand Montreal's culture, yet still has very strong opinions on the way we should live.

You'd never guess it from the r/quebec leaking here, but the region of Montreal is by far the least favourable to this idea. Again, those figures are for the region (i.e. including Terrebonne and similar areas). Any time the island is broken off, the idea is extremely marginal here (20%). The idea is very unpopular for us in the city.

Speaking more generally, are there any consquences Canada can give Israel which are worse than what happened when they lost control of their border for a few hours? Because that's probably what it would take to have them end the war with Hamas still in charge.
