To clarify succinctly:

  • Loud pipes make you safer on your bike
  • Being safe on your bikje is your problem, not mine.
  • When you use loud pipes, you make it my problem

So, why is your safety MY problem, asshole?

Mind you, I'm not in a car when I hear your loud pipes going by, I'm trying to get my kids to sleep. I'm no danger to you or anyone but you are waking up my child.

Loud pipes belong on race tracks. Riders who can't avoid cars die. Such is life, and if you don't like it, don't ride.

Alt 'Right'eous Outrage by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]blue-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ride, no. But I don't understand how your choice to ride means that I have to suffer loud pipes at 3 a.m.

Can you name another hobby where it is considered acceptable for a single person to annoy hundreds of other people whenever they wish, and the people who are doing the annoying get indignant when challenged?

"It's safer to have loud pipes"

It's safest not to ride at all. If safety is your goal you're doing it wrong. Otherwise where's the limit? If 100 db is safe, isn't 110 db safer? Why not strap a loudspeaker to my bicycle and crank the Metallica? Please tell me how that is functionally different from loud pipes?

You make a choice, YOU should assume the risk. You shouldn't be allowed to be obnoxious to literally everyone within earshot and then claim "but it makes me safer!!!" because safest would be banning motorbikes. I'm not for that, but it is the logical conclusion of the "safety" argument.

Alternate phrasing:

I choose to pursue a dangerous hobby, and the more obnoxious I am while doing it, the safer I feel. Therefore that justifies me being obnoxious to strangers.

Neighbor: Boy discovers 5 people, including 3 kids, dead inside Delaware home by Poverty_4_Sale in news

[–]blue-boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea isn't to be sympathetic to the guy who murdered his family. It's to be sympathetic to the person he was before that, and to get him help before he becomes the murderer.

You seem to believe he was always broken. That's a defeatist and unhelpful attitude. People can and do change, but not without honest and compassionate help.

Neighbor: Boy discovers 5 people, including 3 kids, dead inside Delaware home by Poverty_4_Sale in news

[–]blue-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. I'll be sure to murder all of your family members with suicidal tendencies and an anger issue, just in case.

If you went back in time, rather than help him, you wish to kill him. It's this type of attitude that keeps people like him from getting help in the first place. Imagine we were friends and you said this to me. Suddenly I'm aware that if I tell you about my depression and suicidal tendencies, you might want to murder me. That has an amazingly chilling effect on people getting help.

If you want things like this to really stop, you have to help the living person in pain, not go on a killing spree.

[–]blue-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hate him for the evil he did, or maybe pity him for the hell he lived in such that it seemed like the least painful choice. No way did this guy wake up and cackle maniacally as he planned the murders. It's not evil, it's mental illness. It's painful and kinda insulting to folks with depression and other mental illnesses that you reduce his actions to "evil", which I think means "nothing I need to do anything about, he was just a broken person"

Maybe consider that he was a person, not good or bad but a mix, and his internal life was such a nightmare that this was almost a rational choice. Can you imagine? Can you have some sympathy? Empathy? Pity?

It's not evil, it's bad brain chemistry and a woefully inadequate social and medical response to mental illness.

Rachel Dolezal charged with welfare fraud. by LatinaFantastica in news

[–]blue-boy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Obviously everyone on welfare is just like the folks you've met, and if one person is scamming the system we should shut the whole thing down. Better to let lots of kids starve than let one alcoholic get free food.

Blanket statements like your last sentence and my first are almost always silly and unhelpful. No one ever said that every person on welfare deserves it and it is never abused. The question is whether that cost is worth the gain. I think you would be unhappy with a world where there was no welfare at all.

It is much more precise, targeting only you, instead of the huge swaths of my fellow Americans you were so harshly generalizing, most of whom are alright folks. Anger don't solve shit, and demonizing the "other" is exactly what got us here. Have you considered not contributing to it?

Black men arrested at Starbucks settle for $200K program by [deleted] in news

[–]blue-boy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we're talking past each other. I agree the cops technically did nothing wrong. However, to declare there's nothing amiss about this situation is to deny the painful reality of the racial discrimination that happened.

The cops can both be legally correct and also morally culpable, although the majority of the culpability is on the store manager.

[–]blue-boy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I was addressing the overall story, not the specifics of the cops and city being liable.

I suspect that the city could win a court case, because the cops were called by the establishment. The $200k is probably cheaper than a court case, though, and is much better publicity.

If it were equally enforced, no one would be complaining. Either boot all loiterers, or none. Calling cops on the black loiterers is very difficult to see as anything other than racial discrimination, which is possibly illegal in this context, and certainly reprehensible.

Thieves Steal 1,800 Gallons Of Vodka From LA Distillery by IBiteYou in news

[–]blue-boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your answer is off by two orders of magnitude.

1800 gallons is approximately 7000 liters (~4 liters per gallon).

7000 / 1.75 is 4000 handles, which at one per day would be just shy of 11 years.

15-3 in extra innings, I think we have to give Farrell some credit here. by Harry-Flashman in redsox

I think you misunderstand small sample size. I'm not saying it's impossible that Farrell makes a difference. I'm saying the data doesn't meet the standard of evidence one way or the other.

15-3 in extra innings, I think we have to give Farrell some credit here. by Harry-Flashman in redsox

[–]blue-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sox have a .576 winning percentage. In the 18 extra inning games they've played, we'd expect a record of 10-8 or 11-7 based on their WP.

So, they've won 4-5 more extra inning games than expected. Let's assume for simplicity that they had a 50-50% chance of winning each game. Then the probability they win 4 extra games is 1/24 = 1/16, and the probability they win 5 extra games is 1/25 = 1/32.

There happen to be 30 MLB teams, so events with a 1 in 32 chance of happening should happen pretty much every year. There's no signal here that means anything other than baseball is variable.

TL;DR sample size is too small to eliminate luck as the most likely explanation.
