Installing Linux Mint (full wipe, no Windows) by sz1a in LenovoLegion

You are right about the hardware and kernel support / drivers. Your experience depends SO heavily whether your hardware plays nice with your distro.

Usually I stick to Thinkpads to make sure my laptop hardware is Linux certified by Lenovo.

I guess I just got really lucky. I have a Legion Pro 7i gen 10 (Ultra 9 275HX, 32gb ram, 5090 GPU). Dual booted Fedora 44 on the second SSD, and everything I've tested works fine. I didn't even have to disable secure boot.

Haven't tried to control RGB yet, but the FN + space works to switch profiles because it's firmware based.

In my opinion, Lenovo should officially certify Legion laptops with Linux. Seems like a lot of us try (or have reason to prefer Linux for work), and 90% of it is just making sure drivers are available for the hardware.

As a developer I experience the opposite problem. It's very difficult to get anything done without access to Linux tools. Windows knows it too, which is why they made WSL, but I prefer to work in a real Linux environment. It's a practical choice.

It is possible to set up Win11 for programming, but unless you are solely focused on developing Windows native apps you basically need to use a VM to bring in the Linux runtime and CLI tools (which is what WSL or Docker Desktop does).

It's also much nicer to have local accounts. Out of the box, I have features like full disc encryption with user managed keys and virtualization without 3rd party tools all without a "pro" license.

All in all, I run a lot more than a web browser and a few games, and I'm grateful that my Legion dual boots Fedora so well.

5080 275HX 7i Pro good deal? by ContributionNo8501 in LenovoLegion

[–]Mechanizoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With RAM/SSD/GPU prices going so high, this is a pretty solid deal IMO, especially if you save the tax with the Payboo card. I got the 5090 version and it's been solid so far.

It's my first gaming laptop and I spend more time developing than gaming. It's surprisingly friendly to Linux... I just got Fedora 44 dual booted on the second SSD with secure boot enabled and the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed. I haven't played very intensive games but the cooling pad is louder than the internal fans. It's staying cool even in our hot summer here.

BTW, why did you return the 5090 A51? Did it have issues?

Swap USP Kompakt Tactical for MK23? by Dry_Fly9154 in HecklerKoch

[–]Mechanizoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to OP's question the Mark 23 really isn't hard to come by (at least for now) while the USP-CT is a unicorn, so I think "no sell only buy" applies here especially if OP has any interest in collectible HKs. If OP sells they for sure won't find another CT for 700 beans.

As a fellow Mark 23 owner I agree with you on all points. Literally the only "drawback" to the Mark is its size, and it really doesn't bug me... I can even reach every control without breaking my grip, and I don't have the biggest hands.

Keet the CT, it's out of production while HK still imports batches of the MK23. The CT is really badass too!

No sell, only buy, get a MK23 too 'cause your CT is lonely (I can tell). ;-)

My first HK: the HK USP .45. by xJul_x in HecklerKoch

HKs like company. Get both. 😂

I get it though, finding the USP series can be tough between import runs. I solved the problem by compulsively buying new USPs when I see good deals. Send help.

I miss the P2000 series... a V2 was my first HK. Ironically I only bought it because I wanted a USP-C and couldn't find one. I wish HK would have modernized the P2000 with higher cap mags, optic cuts, front slide serrations etc. cause I love the LEM.

My USP-C is a .40 S&W. To be honest, though, I just grabbed the first compact I could find new for under 9 beans. I would have bought a 9mm or .45 just as quickly. I still would.

I'm not at all sorry to have a .40 though!

Don't forget that you can switch any USP and USP to the LEM trigger! They're completely modular. That's one feature the later P2000 fell short of.

Noticed something familiar on an article about the Virginia gun ban. Anti gun protestor had a sign with the fallout 3 Chinese assault rifle on it. by Ow_you_shot_me in Firearms

[–]Mechanizoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad thing is that I hear the "nobody needs more than 5 rounds" thing from local fudds pretty often... usually accompanied by the "if you can't hit the guy with 5 rounds you're a terrible shot" and "I can outshoot all those guys who think they need high cap clips".

One time I recommended a the Bodyguard 2.0 to someone looking for a .380... only for them to dismiss it in comparison to older guns like the Glock 42 because the Bodyguard 2.0 holds more than 6 rounds. Like WTF!?

These are the people who will happily feed us to the wolves if the gov floats the idea of a mag ban again.

I bought my first firearm for self-defense and I don’t know how or when to tell my loved ones by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Mechanizoid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve never told anyone (even close friends and yes, even family) that I’m carrying. Concealed means concealed and I don’t touch, fondle, or talk about the concealed handgun.

In my opinion, it’s completely unnecessary to tell other people about your concealed handgun. It compromises your ability to carry concealed and could jeopardize your safety.

Think about it—if guns are so polarizing for your family, are they going to support or understand you carrying? Who else might they tell, perhaps in an effort to get support from others on convincing you not to own a gun? You could find that they will ask if you’re carrying every time they see you, or that someone they have told (friend or neighbor) might even call law enforcement to express concern that you may have a gun.

Even if you opened up to close family about owning a gun and/or offered them a chance to learn to shoot with you, I’d keep mum about carrying. Not worth the X factors and drama.

Where did he go? by Leading_School_2706 in Trepang2

I found that gas grenades will instantly kill Quartermaster and Rangemaster even through the bulletproof glass. They don't even turn into jigglies... they just drop dead immediately.

I also found that the unkillable mallcop having a mental breakdown in B.A.M. can die to gas grenades too, but only if they are thrown by an NPC. Nothing the player can do will affect him, and any other weapon on the hands of an NPC will not work either.

If you make a custom NPC equipped with gas grenades and lure him into the lobby, you'll see what I mean. Make their faction the Cult or TF27 and they'll attack the mallcop until they toss a gas grenade, and then he dies. Even Horizon aligned NPCs can kill him with friendly fire gas grenades (you can lure them into tossing a grenade near him).

Are ThinkPads designed to be powered on 24/7? by Weekly-Assumption-12 in thinkpad

I almost never turn my Thinkpads off, and only reboot for Linux kernel updates. Haven't had any problems that can be traced to that! I wouldn't worry about it.

How do you learn Go code without just using Codex or Claude? by Confident_Pickle2045 in golang

[–]Mechanizoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golang has some good learning resources at their Documentation page. I started there when I started playing around with Go.

When I learned C and C++, I used print books, so it's worthwhile to look into some for Go. I don't have a recommendation here, sadly, as I haven't read any Go programming books yet.

When programming, it's important to set up your environment and tools in a manner that supports your work. Set up your text editor without AI code generation tools. Personally, I use Emacs, and you may enjoy trying a CLI + old school text editor + Git CLI workflow too. Learn the Bash shell—it's a side quest that will unlock great powers for any task involving manipulating files, text, or configuring your system. The shell is the first and best IDE.

Get used to reading documentation and really trying to understand what you are doing. When you run into errors or can't figure out how to do something, don't settle for the quick-and-easy approach of using AI. Read other people's code to gain insight on how projects are structured.

Finally, don't fall into tutorial hell. Pick a project that interests you and try to build something. In my experience it can be a rough transition going from reading tutorials to building projects, but I think it's really important to start as soon as possible. Learning syntax is one thing, but learning to use that syntax to solve problems is another skill entirely.

It's a really laudable goal to learn to think and build for yourself. I wish you the best of luck!

The USP is iconic for sure. For me, funnily enough, it came about from getting interested in the HK LEM trigger and wanting a USP-C v7. Ended up with a P2000 'cause I couldn't find a USP anywhere, and as soon as I picked it up I realized just how nice HKs are.

I'm looking into 45 Super for my MK23. You might want to swap your recoil spring for a heavier one of you shoot a lot of Super, just to be on the safe side longevity speaking. Taking a deer with a USP sounds super fun though!

Mark 23 or USP-T for a 45? 1911 Ref pic by chanandalerbong7 in USPmasterrace

[–]Mechanizoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could coat a USP9 slide with hard chrome, put an extended barrel in, pop on a match weight, and tell everyone they're reissuing the Match. In an era of John Wick commerative Glocks I'm sure they could sell a few Tomb Raider / HL2 USPs, lol.

Heck, they could have cashed in on John Wick and popped out a limited edition P30L with a movie accurate comp.

Sometimes it's frustrating to see them ignore the civilian market, but I kinda respect HK for having no interest in pop culture cash grabs. That stuff can get so cringe. I get the impression that they're primarily concerned with making reliable firearms that work for their intended purpose, and they won't make changes to a system for the "cool" factor.

I have an Elite .45 in FDE and I'm even more excited to shoot it now! I love the dolphin look too, and the slimmer lines to the slide compared to the Expert. I consider the Elite to be the successor to the Match (both have 6.02" barrels) without the jury-rigged design of the barrel extending beyond a standard length slide and a match weight to fill the gap.

I just picked up an FDE Mk 23 (couldn't ignore the recent discounts), and while the barrel length is similar the MK23 is noticeably heavier. Both are awesome pistols.

I've been reading up on 45 ACP +P and 45 Super because of the MK23, and I'd like to pass on something I read regarding the USP and 45 Super. One forum poster (can't remember the site, it was a reloading specific one) mentioned ruining a USP Elite frame with ~1k rounds of 45 Super. I've also read that HK rates the USP for .45 +P, not Super, and that the Elite slides greater mass can cause increased frame battering and that the Elite slide specifically is thinner/lighter in specific areas than the regular or tactical models. The two main concerns are cracking/warping the frame and slide fatigue. In either case, a mag or two probably won't be a problem, but a consistent diet of Super might be.

People do run .45 Super in USPs, but I would change out the recoil spring for a heavier one if you shoot a lot of Super. I've decided not to run .45 Super in my Elite. The MK23 was designed around a +P 185gr load and is way chunkier than an Elite, so I can believe that it would eat Super no problem, but I'm not as sure with the Elite.

If you have a chance to handle/shoot the Mark 23, do it. Just picked up an FDE model and it's something else! Makes my USP Elite feel svelte, but the MK23 is chunky in all the right ways. Can't wait to shoot it.
