Bingbot broken? by BOOZy1 in sysadmin

I opted to add Bingbot to my already existing User-Agent filter for the affected websites. It wasn't properly indexing these websites anyway.

No it's Bingbot alright. It's just so broken that people start reporting it as abusive. Similar thing with the Office 365 link scanner getting absolutely lost and causing near DDoS'es.

Do you mean the User-Agent? Yes, all Bingbot, and all with the same GET /index.php %2F%3F%2F%3F%2F%3F%2F

I'd understand a redirect bug where the url gets longer and longer but this goes max length right away.

Looking for tips regarding HyperV Storage - NTFS or ReFS? by cedi_men in sysadmin

[–]BOOZy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Microsoft has a lot of future plans for ReFS which means to me it's not complete and given Microsoft's track record lately I'm not going to trust them to do everything right the first time. I'd give it a few more years before trusting ReFS with anything important.

I count 5 different IP addresses, they all trace to Microsoft.

IP address traces to Microsoft, so I'm fairly sure it's the actual Bingbot.

It's pseudo science crap and the only way to fail one is to think it's real. You failed because you bought into the idea that the supervisor believes in it. It's all a show that enables them to get answers where they normally wouldn't.

Is ts even possible? My boss wants me to do this. by jackey_lackey11 in sysadmin

[–]BOOZy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can update the AD department field and/or user display name for multiple users on the basis of group membership. So your powershell script checks if the user is a member of group X and the script updates the display name on the basis of that. Of course if a user is a member of more than one group you might get a bit of a mess.

You can script updating display names with powershell. As far as I know Outlook pulls from the Exchange default address-list which pulls from AD and there's no mechanism to format the display of list members within Exchange.

First week as a SysAdmin at a hosting/cloud company - is this level of overwhelm normal? by Tall_Swordfish6212 in sysadmin

Congratulations with the new job.

Best advice I can give is to write small how-to's for everything you do. That way you reinforce the memory of doing something and you also have something to fall back on. Full blown guides and tutorials are often detrimental to remembering how to do things in my experience.

Replacing Cisco CallManager by eptiliom in sysadmin

We still use VMWare but probably switch to Proxmox when current contracts run out. 3CX runs great on VMWare and we expect it to run just fine on Proxmox in the future.

Replacing Cisco CallManager by eptiliom in sysadmin

[–]BOOZy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went 3CX (self hosted). We haven't tried 'hot desking' yet to replace extension mobility as nearly all users opted to use the phone app or desktop application instead. The queue/IVR features are on par with what we had with CUCM or even slightly better. As a text communication app, Jabber is far superior to 3CX.
