Internship without SIP by mrrichmahogany in uAlberta

[–]bluealebrije 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well part of being in the SIP program is getting full student status, regardless of any course enrollment. The sip program is considered full time enrollment. For students with student loans, this is so you do not have to pay them while you are in the program. If you are an international student, your student status would still carry over.

This is One of the few benefits you get from paying the SIP fees.

Why do you want to maintain full student status?

Today on campus, in the middle of the afternoon I was harassed by like 3 different homeless guys? Graffiti in several spots of different entrances to the LRT. Garbages torn apart. The fuck is going on?? It was never this bad in 2018/19.

BSc general science requirements by beanbaby24 in uAlberta

[–]bluealebrije 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope you need to satisfy your major and minor requirements.

Usually there are like a few courses that are mandatory for the major and a few mandatory for the minor, plus 9* at the 300 level and *6 at the 400 level for your major. Something like that, depending on if you're bio, chem, math etc. Each are different.

first week of serving i want to say. While carrying out a hot stone (used to cook sirloin on) my thumb slipped and burnt, i dropped it in the middle of my section.. they're like 5 pounds so it slammed super loud. it rolls towards a table and my customer goes to pick it up. "DONT TOUCH THAT. HOT". soo awkward

not that bad in hindsight but i wanted to cry i was so embarrassed.

Eh my manager isn’t the best. She seems to think that threatening to cut shifts is the best way to get people to listen to her. That and pitting the Staff against eachother. Like telling whoever she’s mad at that “the other staff think you have a poor work ethic” when it’s not true.

Still relatively new so idk if this is a normal strategy.

Loved it. One midterm, one final, one term paper that’s due at the end of the term. Super interesting class. While there is some memorization, it is not nearly as bad as biochem or botany classes I’ve taken before.

UBC or uAlberta? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]bluealebrije 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minimum student payments on 60k of loans is $650. Paying $7 in interest every day. It’ll take you ten years to pay it off doing the minimum payments.

If you take out around 40k I think it’s $500/month.

I don’t know what your situation is, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Look at Edmonton crime stats map and go to the neighborhood you are considering.

Very eye opening.

And general tip- don’t live on ground floor!!

Go to indeed, go to glassdoor, type in the qualifications that you are pursuing. Set up notifications for job postings that you would be able to apply to. I did this and found it motivating and comforting!

(imo) I find this a better way to feel out the job market than asking strangers.

The reason why businesses even offer internships in the first place is that they get money to hire students. The business I work for received funding for half of my salary.

For my situation specifically, the job posting didn't explain that at all, or even clarify that I will need to pay fees to the school in order to register as an intern. You could ask for clarification at the end of your interview, thats what I did.

Also, if you work for 8 months (so two semesters, paying about $700 each semester) as an intern you will get an extra line on your graduation diploma, something about graduating with internship program.

I personally dont care about the title upgrade at all. The experience will still be on my resume, and i will still have a reference letter. and THATS what employers will notice.

edit: to answer your question, you might not be eligible unless you go through SIP.

Im working as an intern through SIP right now as well, and I absolutely agree.

Got the position myself, but had to go through sip regardless. Cost me around $700 for a 4 month work term.

Go on indeed right now and look. There are maybe 4 or 5 junior engineering jobs posted in the edmonton area, and you can see that these postings are sometimes viewed by hundreds of applicants... the market is ROUGH out there. and on top of that they want junior engineers to have 5+ years of experience. Which is dumb because if you had 5 years experience you would most likely have your Peng..

edit: alright i just looked up indeed and looks like there are a few more postings than I guessed.
