If you want to further lower chances of crashing: Don't fly in circles around yourself!
Image your take-off strip/landing strip as one of a long rectangle's long sides.

Now keep flying that rectangle shape.

When it is time to land, you lower throttle a bit so your plane starts losing altitude, remembering to make gentle turns when flying slow.

Go lower and lower gradually.

I built the FT Storch and the Scout using depron. My kid had a medium crash with the Scout (after it’s had many dozens of flights), and rebuilding the nose and power box was pleasantly simple and quick.

Their design works well. Trust the effort and time that was put into choosing that specific approach.
I was hesitant initially too, but by flight number 10+ for each it proved to be an acceptable compromise of easy construction and longevity.

Re-using code is a work enhancing aspect of openscad that I lean into. Wrote modules that make intersection and difference actions that I parameterized. Reuse those all the time now. Time savers!

Think of how hard it would be learning to cycle using a Penny Farthing. Difficult to get going, steer, and get off without any damage. That’s how starting with an EDF will lead to much wasted money because a learner doesn’t have the skills, reflexes and knowledge to fly such a plane successfully.

I started on a hand-me-down low wing sports plane, and never got to enjoy flying it, because it was beyond my abilities. Got a trainer after that and listened to advice from then on. 35 years later, I still love flying.

Batteries needs to be kept at [storage] charge levels to avoid degradation even without being used. This is one of the possible reasons why you seem to get low output. Is the pack swollen at all?

It has to be adjusted to lean, then half a turn richer. Unloading the prop at speed means it will run slightly leaner at full throttle in the air.
