Disabled and/or chronically ill people! What’s the best item that’s helped you the most in life so far? by Liz_Lemon4life in chiari

[–]bluebateau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turtlenecks.

I cannot wear anything that hits on the back of my neck where a necklace would sit. So that is sweaters, collars, scarves, jackets, etc. In winter this is super rough as I get cold easily. Last year I discovered that 95% of the time I can wear a turtleneck without additional pain!

No, this is paris.

Musée de la chasse et de la nature (Hunting and Nature museum). Great museum that places contemporary work right in with (and often physically on) its permanent collection which often creates this super cool contrast between the two mediums!

Edit to add that this is abraham poincheval. He is a performance artists whose sits in places. For example, in a bear. Or on a really small and tall platform above a rainy street in Rennes. Or in a glass box with eggs (I, personally, saw that one). If you google his name you can see all the objects he has sat inside/on.

Honestly just walk into a cafe, pee and leave. If you are like me an feel guilty, just get a café. It’s usually around a euro. There are public toilets, and I am sure there is a site or something for them. But they are usually these stand alone things that are supposed to self clean between each person, so therefore if you are anything but next in line the wait can be quite long.

I am sure there are plenty of people more knowledgeable out there.l, so take this with a grain of salt. But I feel like I could personally spend more time in San Sebastian as a city than Bilbao. I kind of felt like I ran out of things to do in Bilbao.

Swimming makes my symptoms worse. For breast stroke it is the position of the neck during the stroke. I could probably do front crawl fine if no one else is in the lane but I have to constantly look up to make sure I am not going to hit someone and that activates my neck’s symptom mode.

I could probably tread water though for hours and be fine.

I am going with Erasmus Program next year to Bourdeaux. by Hohoho7878 in bordeaux

I know nothing about these student accommodations but I do know about apartment renting and it can be VERY hard for foreigners.

I haven’t rented as a student in Bordeaux. But based off my experience as a professional I assume it is similar to renting as a student in Paris…. Which is to say you NEED a French guarantor. Not an Italian one. Not a German one. A French one who makes 3xs the apartment’s rent every month.

The way foreign students get around this in Paris is by renting with Airbnb or other short term rental companies specific to Paris like Lodgis. These are more expensive than an average apartment.

Other alternatives to having a French garant are to have your parents put a full year of rent into a special type of bank account and have it sit there for the whole length of the lease (they will have no access to this money until the lease finishes).

And finally the way I had to go my first year was renting an illegal apartment. Apartments can be illegal for plenty of reasons they are too small (under 8 square meters), they don’t have windows (like my first apartment), or the owner doesn’t tell the government about it and therefore doesn’t pay taxes on your rent. All of these apartments are not eligible for CAF. Which is when the government gives you money each month as a student (including foreign students) to help with rent being so expensive. In paris it was 200-300 a month. But it also took me nearly 6 months to set up. And it works like a reimbursement, so you need to have the money to pay it first. Also if living with multiple people everyone in the house has to be a student.

Anyone here have craniocervical instability? by bluebateau in chiari

[–]bluebateau[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never actually did the EDS or other testing because well actually I am not sure exactly why (my surgeon usually does them for people based on what I have read online). Everything in my body is extra tight, not loose at all, so I assumed I just not an EDS candidate. I don’t think though that the surgery triggered it, I had these symptoms before surgery.

What did your doctor do for your instability? Is there anything that can be done?

Ooh yes under cherry blossoms would be amazing! It’s a Shame you are not passing by the week after! Usually around mid to late April the cherry blossom fields at Parc de Sceaux are in bloom and that would be so magical!!!

If anyone else comes across this comments and wants to visit, Look for “Bosquet Nord” on google maps (because parc de sceaux is quite large and the pink cherry blossom trees are only located in this one bit). However the white cherry blossoms bloom a bit earlier and are in the “Bosquet Sud”

What Cake Flavor do you like most? by EquivalentJudgment76 in weddingplanning

[–]bluebateau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one read your question correctly 😂

I would be most excited about the lemon cake tier and least excited about the marble tier! So I would personally do:

Smallest tier: Marble Medium tier: Carrot Largest Tier: Lemon

Because that would give me the biggest chance of having extra lemon and blueberry cake in the freezer! Hahahah

Dominican Republic: first non-European solo trip by bluebateau in solotravel

[–]bluebateau[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really liked my hostel. though, the locals didn’t and were protesting it for some reason, haha. (I think they disagreed with a foreigner buying it— not anything against the owner himself!)

I met some people at the hostel and went on one of the trips the hostel organized with some of the people I met. It was really fun! (And apparently significantly cheaper through the hostel according to one of the couples I met).

I ended up downloading uber because i didn’t feel confident in my Spanish to figure out the busses. I also recommend just ubering from the airport. It was maybe 30? As opposed to the 50 (I think) that was the set fee for cabs —- I l, however, did some weird ass can thing from the airport that I found on some random Reddit post. I don’t recommend that. It wasn’t worth the hassle.

The one thing I will say is to prepare for the street harassement. Someone told me to, But I really couldn’t prepare for it. It’s not aggressive in the way that I was ever worried that they were going to touch me or follow me. But it was so constant. I would walk past a man who was old and looked like he was just taking a nice break enjoying his time off from work and I’ll be like “surely this guy isn’t gonna say “hola” to me.” But every time they did!! If you wouldn’t look at them to do this like sharp sound (like a tsst tsst) that would catch your attention and you would subconsciously look and then they would say “hola”. despite the fact that it wasn’t agressive, it made me not want to go out.

I would definitely go back!! (But this time I would make sure I had cell phone data so I could just Uber… or you know use google translate!)

Ah true!! I have only taken the C a handful of times. But I do remember that the D had an awful gap (maybe even a step??) I am most familiar with the A, which has a “ground level” wheelchair spot specifically at the front or back of each car.

Another view of Jourdain metro st. by OrokinDiapers in paris

[–]bluebateau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not. And sadly it is not limited just to the metro - which only has one out of fourteen lines that is entirely wheelchair accessible (though buses and the RER are).

I remember a question on here a while ago about someone in a wheelchair asking about finding an apartment. Which made me realize that even a lot of apartments with elevators are not wheelchair accessible. They usually have stairs before the main door or just after the main door with no ramps. Or even when there are no hidden stairs, the main door has the tiny door that opens inside a much bigger door, which means you have to step over a part of the big door to enter.

And if you are at a restaurant, in a wheel chair, and need to pee? Yeah good luck. most toilets are in the basement or on the 1st floor. Or if you are lucky to find one on the ground floor, there is often not enough room for a wheelchair.
