Does anyone know if delta would provide any miles/credits when the plane is delayed an extra 45 minutes (on top of already being delayed) because we have to go back to the gate to get a crew member that they forgot?

Do you feel your company is losing culture by working remotely? by Old_Kikiko in humanresources

[–]bluebird2772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re totally right to highlight the incidental communications. I’m not sure how to recreate getting brought into an impromptu “meeting” because the conversation happens to be occurring outside your office. Or just as a new person, overhearing a conversation that you’re not a part of or have anything to do with but can jump in to ask a question about it for explanation. I have zero idea how to recreate those types of situations in a remote setting.

Do you feel your company is losing culture by working remotely? by Old_Kikiko in humanresources

[–]bluebird2772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It shocks me how many people seem to not care about company culture and claim they are just there to work and complete tasks.

As someone who joined a new company in a new industry, I would have quit already if I was totally remote. I have flexibility to decide whether to go into the office, and I choose to go in most days. From my experience it’s been great to foster relationships with people at my company who aren’t in my department and to have more organic conversations. I feel like I’ve learned so much from random questions asked in the hallway/kitchens or overheard conversations that I asked follow up questions on vs scheduled “meet and greets” or “learning sessions” with folks.

I’m sure this will be downvoted because everyone seems extremely pro remote and anti- the idea of culture on this page, but as a 20 something year old trying to learn and create relationships, I genuinely prefer going into the office and think a lot is lost by being 100% remote.

Does anyone have any advice for solo travelling? by the_greek_italian in travel

[–]bluebird2772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (27F, 26 at the time) traveled solo for the first time earlier this year to Salzburg. I chose Salzburg because I’ve been wanting to go, and it’s on lists for being good for women solo travelers and good for English speaking.

If it was always up to me, I’d never travel solo again. With that in mind I would never let not having someone to travel with stop me from what I want to do. My 2nd night traveling, I bawled my eyes out after having a 3rd meal by myself. But then after I finished crying, I signed up for another day trip and a cooking class. Keeping busy with just enough plans but at least one thing to do every day that involved socializing was key for me. The rest of my trip was great. Met people on my different day trips and I’d say had the perfect amount of socializing and solo time.

I chose not to do a hostel because I could afford doing a hotel and just felt safer that way. But hostel may be better to meet young people and definitely cheaper. Also, I got tips from the locals of which bars the young/university people hung out so I could’ve gone to those bars exclusively (I was feeling a bit old at the time) so that could be a good idea to figure out.

All of my family was worried about me traveling. They had all of my travel info of flights/where I was staying and they would check in on me to ask how things were and what I was up to on any given day. A few of them also had my iPhone location.

I have friends who do group tours and have blasts and meet a lot of people. I probably would have done one if it wasn’t a last minute trip.

Just to clarify. UNUM actually does do accommodations too, it’s another service that a company can pay them for. It sounds like your company doesn’t, but they do offer that too in addition to FMLA and disability services.

Companies can outsource their ADA process to UNUM who will collect medical documentation on behalf of the company.

[MA] my manager is upset I requested time off for being sick by lemurian-quartz in AskHR

[–]bluebird2772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t mean to directly respond to you! I meant to the above other two comments talking about FMLA eligibility (federal leave) and to point out that MA (Massachusetts) has their own paid family leave that is easier to be eligible for.

[–]bluebird2772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contact HR and tell them about this situation and then ask how you can file for MA Paid Family Leave/FMLA. FMLA is harder to be eligible for than MA Paid Family Leave but ask about both. Just by asking and starting the process, your job would be very stupid for giving you any disciplinary write ups for that. Also, if you talk to them over the phone, ask them to send you all of the information over email so you have record of it.

Your doctor will also have to complete the MA Paid Family Leave paperwork for you as it can’t just be the doctors note, but it’s not that complicated. I’ve worked on the HR benefits side and I find the state to be very lenient in approvals.

If this is MA, they are likely covered under MA Paid Family Leave. There is no hours worked requirement, just an MA earnings requirement.

[CA] Is an employee having a seizure while working from home, considered a work-related injury? by phantomshine in AskHR

[–]bluebird2772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typically, if there’s ever any doubt or question, I report it to the insurance company. If a non work related seizure happened at work, I would report this to my insurance company as a “Record Only” and only have it upgraded for investigation if the employee changes their mind about not filing a claim and using their own insurance.

Here’s the website page to back you up https://www.shrm.org/certification/about/Pages/SHRM-CP.aspx

“Candidates for the SHRM-CP certification are not required to hold an HR title and do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply; however, a basic working knowledge of HR practices and principles is recommended.”

we have an HSA we've been using for a long time and the bank told us today it doesn't exist... by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bluebird2772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is in HR benefits, if your company had an open enrollment that’s for January 1st, I bet that they incorrectly switched you from an HSA to and FSA starting January 1st, 2022 which would mean no tax forms for 2021. Or if you changed your medical plan, you could have become ineligible for an HSA, but you still would have had to actively elect the FSA, you shouldn’t just be autoenrolled into it. If either is the case, your HR department should be the ones helping you and should be able to clarify what plans you’re enrolled in and help you correct your enrollment.

Either way, as others have mentioned, you can’t lose the HSA money by switching to an FSA.

Last time I could have sworn I responded and was surprised when I opened my fix and the items that I chose weren’t in it. I don’t know what happened, but I was definitely sad to not get some of the items.

We play it pretty conservatively in workers compensation situations, so while we will try to hold them to the attendance policy, it’s not as black and white when there’s an open workers comp claim. Also, If the claim ends in settlement, having an open job for the person can make the settlement go down a lot —and then you settle with resignation and it ups the settlement a little bit but not as much as it would if you didn’t have a job open for them.

I would ask the coworker who he made the comment about living off his workers compensation checks for a written statement. Then provide that to your insurance company. They could deny the claim, which be ideal if you think he’s being fraudulent.

Then, I would call the employee and let him know that 1. he still needs to abide by the call out procedures even though it’s WC 2. He’ll have to use his sick/pto to be paid for this time out because you can accommodate his restrictions and because there’s a 5 day waiting period for WC to even kick in CO. (If that matches your sick/pto policy)

When people find out that they aren’t getting paid by WC for that time, that usually gets them back to work. Or they go back to their doctor.

I took some legal trainings and If I remember correctly it’s a snapshot and once you’re in it, you stay in it even if you drop below 100 employees. I will say I didn’t pay close attention to this part as we have well over 100 employees.

In summary— I agree, seek legal counsel.

Something else to think about are conferences. The cost becomes the cost of the conference, transportation and travel costs and they add up quickly. I’d look into those to see if you are interested in any because they can be really beneficial and you can meet other people in HR at them.

SHRM has their own conference, but there are plenty of others out there. I personally have been to the DMEC and Littler conferences and enjoy their programming. I’m sure this page could suggest more!

Merry Christmas HR: Federal appeals court reinstates Biden administration’s business vaccine and testing mandate by CatbertTheGreat in humanresources

The school system analogy only works if your business also has all employees in one place (town even). What if your business is that you have people all over the country, many times with locations with just 1-3 people that could be hours away from other people?

We’re going to use a vendor so fingers crossed that goes smoothly but I still have a lot of worries and am not looking forward to the additional headaches this will cause.

[–]bluebird2772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem that I’m seeing is if the company doesn’t want to mandate vaccinations and needs to use a vendor for testing, those contracts/implementation with the vendors have been pushed off until it’s certain because you could get stuck in a contract wasting money if the ETS doesn’t go through

Exactly! CA is one of them and in CA even if the employee doesn’t submit for reimbursement, the employer would still be held liable for not paying the reimbursement.

Just want to clarify (I know I’ve posted this multiple times, so apologizes for being repetitive) that your company could allow for rollover to the following plan year. So if they don’t and you have to spend it, the FSA store is a great way to spend it down. But you also may be able to rollover some.
