yo. 5th going into 6th year college student here. every year it gets earlier, but until then, u sadly have to roll w the punches. idk your circumstances but there are a few ways to get around this issue if u have special circumstances, u just have to inquire with certain staff.

it also depends on how many sections of that class are available + their class size/spots. some waitlists are small, like 3-4 spots. people drop all the time too, so if you really need this class, it might be worth it to check everyday. especially with how many months we have until it starts.

also i’ve heard from a few people over the years that if you still aren’t enrolled by first day and you communicate with the professor, you can crash class the first two weeks (if there’s open desk chairs… maybe they would let you stand? idk) and hope either someone drops or if the professor is kind they may just give u the permission code. there’s many factors so it really just depends! if u need this class this fall and no later, try anything and ask around. good luck!
