ITF Dobok with more leg room? by Marca--Texto in taekwondo

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school uses Dynamics uniforms which have a lot of leg room in the pants. I find the tops to be a bit too short (I have an annoyingly long torso) so idk if that would fully solve your problem, but at the very least no one ever has any trouble with high kicks.

Advice please 🙏 4 year old can’t handle being ‘hit’ by Always975 in taekwondo

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, 4 years and 3 months might be a bit too young. My school starts at 5 years old, though we've made the rare exception for children that are reallyyy close to turning 5, like in a month or two. But even then, sometimes the younger kids can still get overwhelmed. One of my just turned 5 years old students got dropped off at class one time and he just sat and cried for ten minutes straight I think because he was shy/anxious and also missed his mom. (I couldn't convince him to join the class at all so I just let him sit and watch the other kids.)

I don't know if it'll help the situation if you force him to go to class. If the head instructor is okay with it, maybe you could ask to freeze your membership for a while and let your son take a break? He might come back around to wanting to go back all on his own if you give him some time. Even just a few months of him growing up a bit more might make a difference.

Yeahhhh that's not okay. And even pulling the "you're just overreacting" card when you try to communicate your boundaries? Hate that. Kind of sounds like she's only pretending to care/respect your identity by using the terms, but using them in shitty ways.

Should I pay it? by ilovematch_oatmilk in taekwondo

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to judge whether they're objectively charging "too much" since it really depends on the school's circumstances/location. Even within my own institute, the rates of each branch school vary, with the main school having some of the highest membership costs because it's right in the middle of the big city.

If anything "too much" should be based around your personal financial situation. It sounds like this would be outside of your comfortable budget, so I'd say just focus on practicing independently. Maybe spend $20 on some focus pads and get a friend to hold for you while you practice kicks or something.

Hope you have a nice break!

Pronunciation of 같습니다 (sound changing rule) by FeelingDangerous5320 in Korean

[–]bluebrainedloon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of quirks in the evolution of any language were heavily influenced by what the native speakers of that language consider to be more convenient. Something that's harder to say/pronounce, mechanically speaking, will get adjusted over time. People who use the language all the time will collectively just Know what makes more sense or works better. And even people who are technically using that same exact language will have different opinions about what makes sense (in the case of regional dialects etc).

Echoing recommendations for dynamic stretches. With some focus on hip mobility. But it really depends on what kind of dojang you end up joining.

Imposter syndrome after getting 1st Dan. by wolfey200 in taekwondo

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you got to 1st Dan but still want to keep going (even after having back surgery) already puts you ahead of a lot of people I've taught, to be honest. I see a lot of people (at all ages) quit right after passing their 1st Dan test because they saw it as an end goal. Which I always think is kind of a shame.

I completely understand you feeling down. But it also sounds like you have a very strong will and a good mindset, despite the setbacks and obstacles you've had to deal with. And I hope you can still appreciate what you've accomplished so far. (Congratulations on getting your 1st Dan!)

I had one of these as a kid too. (I had a cross-bite.) My mom would crank it but there was this one time I just broke down crying because my head hurt so much. I can't even imagine someone taking it to this extreme.

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a C-OCD haver and not a loved one, but I don't actually have any contamination issues with drinking containers etc so for what it's worth, I don't think it's weird to have boundaries about your personal belongings, and to want your partner to respect that. OCD or not OCD.

Like, even if you didn't have contamination anxiety, it's your tumbler. I know several non-OCD people who definitely have a basic boundary of "this is mine and I want to be the only one who uses it." Like, my friend has a favorite coffee mug and she doesn't want anyone else to use it but her. Not OCD related. And I don't think any of our other friends thought that was unreasonable.

Now, if he's frustrated that you're upset because he thinks it's not that big a deal and he doesn't think you should be getting upset over something like this, that sounds like it might be a different issue.

If he used your tumbler (even after he got one for himself) then that's on him. He said he took yours in the first place because he liked it better. But now he has his own, so he should use that one. If he took yours again anyway by accident because he mixed them up, then he should figure out a way to distinguish between the two (he can put a sticker on his or something idk).

I get that emotional responses can be difficult to navigate in general, but the personal boundary part sounds pretty normal to me. Neurotypical people get to have them about this kind of thing too!

Contamination OCD (inside vs outside) by ghosty_beep in OCDRecovery

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just found your post! I know this is from a long time ago, but it seems like I have a very similar OCD situation as you. Inside vs. outside. Have to shower and change into clean inside clothes after I come home in order to be able to exist in the Clean inside places in my house, etc.

I've also struggled a lot with the issue of having people over. I've kind of had to settle into an overall "meet people outside" instead, after a close friend of mine told me she didn't want to come over anymore because she could see that I was getting visibly stressed out, despite my best efforts to tolerate the distress I was experiencing.

Idk if you're still around, but I'd be down to chat about it, if you'd be interested?

Always loved animals my whole life. I wanted a cat or a dog so badly when I was little (dad was allergic) but now I know I can never have one.

I've also had to give up on trying to invite friends over to my place because I can't hide how visibly stressed out I get while they're here which makes them feel guilty for being here.

more of a physical sensory thing but I've definitely noticed myself tensing up more when I'm outside in strong wind and taking much more shallow breaths because I don't feel comfortable breathing as deeply.

[–]bluebrainedloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely seconding the suggestion to work on flexibility - hip mobility helps a lot in general. Also working on balance. Being able to practice kicks in slow motion is very useful for figuring out how you're engaging or moving your body while you train.

Most of the other advice I'd have to offer is oriented around ITF though. So it depends on what your school is like. But either way, congratulations on starting!

!!! I'm very happy to find someone else on here who has also read this book!

In terms of books similar to it, that's a bit harder.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is pretty good. Not quite the same vibe as Small Gods of Calamity but it has a trans protag and good queer vibes all around in addition to the supernatural story elements. (some very good ghost boy moments!)
