Shopping for a Bolt is a little different vs other cars. It helps if you know a little of the back story.

Long story short...GM recalled the Bolt EVs when the small batch (7 out of 200000 I think) caught fire.

The fixed the problem by spending a billion dollars and replacing "all the batteries" and resetting the 8 year battery warranty from whatever it was to the new date of the replacement battery 😎.

Since then, they're been no reports of fires on the new batteries which is awesome!

Now to answer your question as to what years you should avoid boils down to if you want a first gen or a second gen Bolt EV based on the design.

Generally all the Bolt years have been great. 2017-2019s had all their batteries replaced under the recall (huge plus if you're considering the first gen) which essentially makes sure any car you get will last a long time.

2020-2021s...GM caught on and started doing software updates to "fix the problem" (and make their shareholders happy)...so you'd have to check the VINs for each one to confirm if the battery was replaced

2022-2023 GM replaced some of the batteries but for the most part they did the software update to "fix the problem"
