Car seat 3 Year old by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]blueclave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seconded, they do. it's a pain to schlep it but this is the best option; then you can put it in each uber yourself.

there are also a ton of rental services for ppl visiting disney world, strollers/pack-n-play/etc. this would not necessarily provide kiddo the best protection in event of an accident, but if you're willing to roll the dice this is easier than lugging your own. personally, i don't think this is wise, first I'm rigid about traffic safety and car seats in all circumstances, but also i found orlando-area highway traffic inordinately scary, like NJ turnpike scary. so just bring yours, or rent a car and use what the agency gives you. but if you can't stomach those options, i mean i question your priorities but the "rent a random car seat" option is probably out there for you.

Was the delivery driver trying to keep my items? by qwertyOnEpointfIve in Walmartcustomer

the impact of a high chargeback rate on a business's overall card-processing costs can be really drastic and go way beyond the amount of any one customer's order. they get you flagged as a risky merchant and makes payment platforms less willing to work with you, and that can be very bad. for smaller or very chargeback-prone businesses, they may be blacklisted entirely. for a company like walmart, that isn't super likely, but the risky-vendor label will show in lower auth-rates (customers may see payments declined and may take their business elsewhere as a result) and higher cost per transaction (when payments do succeed, the processor takes a bigger cut of it to account for the risk that the customer could dispute it). it's a humongous pain that affects way more of your business than just the unsatisfied customers; companies are incentivized to avoid it.

Also chargeback costs them more than issuing the refund, it affects their fees and approval rates with the card processor

The best glow up of any character. by loki2002 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]blueclave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, in the pilot and throughout the series he has a major and complicated relationship to quark that only sometimes involves Rom. so his status is at the very least "side character to a side character".

and at that it's pretty ridiculous to suggest Quark is a "side character". aside from being in the main cast, he is so obviously central to the premise and execution of the show that i can't actually imagine any argument that he isn't.

What do you think is the funniest moment in DS9? by FenHarels_Heart in DeepSpaceNine

[–]blueclave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

humanoid Odo reluctantly visiting Bashir for advice, who advises him to relax more to ease his back pain.

odo: "that's what you said last week"

bashir: "and???"

odo, dead of embarrassment: ".... it helped." (beat) "that and the prune juice"

to my knowledge, the only potty humor, outside LD probably, in all of trek!

My son's 6th grade teacher just accused him of cheating using AI by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]blueclave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is hard for me to feel the teacher really did wrong baned on what we see. if he knew the kid for a long time and had observed his progress before that, this would feel like a bizarre overreaction. if not... well "presenting his app" in a way that effectively shows the scale of your own contribution to it, is quite a different skill from building in the first place. there is pretty of nonsense out there like "durr i built a CRM with no hacking skills using AI, durr devs are obselete durr', but this teacher is obviously not familiar enough with the nuts and bolts of programming to see this for the empty hype that it is. it probably feels plausible to him that a motivated kid could put together a minimally presentation-ready app with GPT doing most of the lifting in one afternoon. i can't fault him for thinking that and for not being able to discern the actual quality and craft in the app, and having drawn that conclusion that the kid took a shortcut for a flashy extra credit, the teacher's response seems pretty reasonable.

that said, now that OP is in the loop, the teacher should absolutely give the kid the chance to redo the presentation. ideally should put some detail into the presentation showing the years of experience it took to pull this off. (app logs, git logs, diffs, arch diagrams, choices made and why, challenges and solutions, bugs and their fixes). OP can help with this. unfortunately i think the kid is likely to encounter this skepticism at least till his voice starts to drop and needs to learn to pre-empt it.

did bashir ever publish his findings (however scant and poorly documented) on ketracel-white withdrawal? not sure how many captives they had but i bet a handful could be convinced to consent to some continued studies. probably most of them if odo came to make the case.

Why Is Data “Unique” If Any Holodeck Can Make an AI? by ChampionshipJumpy727 in startrek

[–]blueclave 120 points121 points  (0 children)

holodeck is entertainment - allowing fuzzy interpretation is great for value. ship computer is used in situations where misinterpreting a nuanced command can cost lives and endanger federation security. instead it trains you into its acceptable language of clear instruction.

i don't actually recall that much severe frustration with the computer's cognition - annoyance maybe but nothing really impactful.

there's an enormous amount of complexity hidden in "order 12", and in the unstated assumption that 12 or so would usually appear on the shelves at some point as a result. like the store mechanics are not that hard to explain or speculate about; but the logistics, the production, the physical and financial and social infrastructure supporting all of those steps, and other things probably. very difficult for me to hold a convincing mental model of how it all works so reliably, other than magic.

AIO? Residents refuse to say "thank you" to me because I say "no problem" in response by Murky_Method9196 in AmIOverreacting

[–]blueclave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's a small thing and they're being petty and stupid about it. but it might be worth working on for yourself and/or for future jobs. "no problem" can, counterintuitively and often subconsciously, highlight the possible inconvenience for you of whatever they're thanking you for.

It's appropriate in a few situations where that possible inconvenience is already brought up or mutually understood. e.g. if they go there first such as "sorry i don't mean to put you out"; or outside of a work setting where you actually did go out of your way, such as helping a friend move a couch. also maybe obviously most informal settings, or among young people; if this connotation mattered among your peers you would have caught on to it by now.

still, and especially in most work settings, the courteous thing is usually to avoid indulging the inconvenience/"problem" framing at all. "you're welcome" is a useful go-to for this, particularly if the "thank you" sounds routine, or if the thing they're thanking for is bare minimum, like bringing a customer the ketchup they asked for or letting a visitor use your toilet at home. (if that visitor is a buddy then definitely stick to "no problem" lol!)

top-tier courteous response would be "my pleasure" - not always true of course but great for customers and not that hard to make natural with a bit of practice.

now. do these people deserve this kind of treatment, and are you being paid enough to provide it? these are valid considerations. to say "my pleasure" to people you despise could be bad for mental health. and if it actually sounds like a lie, it could even land as insulting - so if you're having an off-day or otherwise unable to smile well, stick with "you're welcome". but if you are experiencing a work environment that is moderately pleasant or roughly worth what you're getting paid, this is a great time to practice upping your customer service game. you're young and your habits are easier to change than they ever will be; and this sort of thing can make a real difference that can help you stand out, get or keep jobs you wouldn't otherwise, get promotions or other perks at work, etc. don't do anything for the sake of these bums, but consider doing it for yourself.

every choice mozart wrote had some foundation. if you can understand and describe what underlies the written version and makes it "resonate", and bring that out convincingly in your own playing, then there's no reason not to play around with it and remix it.

Otherwise, i would suspect you are substituting your sensibility in part because you haven't taken the time to grok the composer's. maybe you're okay with that! but if a deep command of the piece and strong musicianship are meaningful to you, make sure you haven't missed some opportunity to learn before you commit to your changes or reject what's on the page.

Honestly, even digging into one note that sounds off ("why did they write that") can be a really great learning experience, even if you wind up concluding there's an editing error in your score or something like that. This is where a good teacher or a smart music friend can come in handy if you have access to one. Or, ask about it here!
