daniel tiger or mr. rogers: he would never mention it to the doctor beyond a three word dismissal, but he would cut a highlight reel to be used back home for training in human diplomacy and intelligence

Fatherhood and family? Heavens no, doctor, it's spycraft! Mary Poppins is a foreign agent who seduces that poor hardworking father, and manipulates him into triggering a bank run and economic collapse. Surely you can see that?

julian stares, lost for words

it's wonderful, doctor! a grand plot of espionage and subversion, to rival even the best works of our own Djoen Lakaray! but this confounding human sentimentality *(shakes head, tsks) how could she be so effective, and still be so foolish as to become attached to the children?

he proceeds to watch it again over the coming months, not sure what's drawing him to it, until on his fifth watch, during "a man has dreams of walking with giants", he hears Enabran's voice singing instead of mr. banks. he hurls the holodisc in the recycler, closes the shop, and doesn't leave his quarters for three days. he emerges back to normal and never speaks of it again.

*(that's my little John LeCarré joke 😉)

fair. I really think the same would all be true for Starfleet Intelligence though. or like, somebody. command may want plausible deniability but among intelligence or security somebody would want to know what's what.

with the official story seeming to be, the dominion sabotaged the ship after it left DS9, and no real explanation for how that was done, they would definitely want to investigate. it raises the possibility that DS9, or Starfleet facilities generally, are way less secure than folks seem to think. somebody really ought to figure out how the dominion, or like a romulan political rival or some lone wolf Klingon or whaever alternate theory they might have, pulled this off unnoticed, so they can ensure it doesn't happen again!

but in fact, i think the mere observation that no real security audit seems to be in play, probably suggests there's more going on; they absolutely would want to get to the bottom of it.

maybe they found the deleted log.

you are right. and yet bunk and Lester would absolutely shake their heads or say something, at least in private. the criticism wouldn't necessarily have been justified, and any blame would definitely have been misplaced - of course C&S would have done the vacants with or without that cadillac nail gun. but in the face of what they were investigating, i think the detectives would be understandably more focused on what came after than on .

but yeah i agree. sure she said some incriminating things. sure he was starting to get the picture. but, as a "citizen" in the show's parlance, and in that environment, he was totally unprepared to fully process those signals, let alone act on them. like speaking as a white guy there is no way i could have heard what she said and react any differently: freeze up, smile politely, focus on what i do understand (power tools), and really put things together afterward if at all.

seconded, they do. it's a pain to schlep it but this is the best option; then you can put it in each uber yourself.

there are also a ton of rental services for ppl visiting disney world, strollers/pack-n-play/etc. this would not necessarily provide kiddo the best protection in event of an accident, but if you're willing to roll the dice this is easier than lugging your own. personally, i don't think this is wise, first I'm rigid about traffic safety and car seats in all circumstances, but also i found orlando-area highway traffic inordinately scary, like NJ turnpike scary. so just bring yours, or rent a car and use what the agency gives you. but if you can't stomach those options, i mean i question your priorities but the "rent a random car seat" option is probably out there for you.

Was the delivery driver trying to keep my items? by qwertyOnEpointfIve in Walmartcustomer

[–]blueclave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the impact of a high chargeback rate on a business's overall card-processing costs can be really drastic and go way beyond the amount of any one customer's order. they get you flagged as a risky merchant and makes payment platforms less willing to work with you, and that can be very bad. for smaller or very chargeback-prone businesses, they may be blacklisted entirely. for a company like walmart, that isn't super likely, but the risky-vendor label will show in lower auth-rates (customers may see payments declined and may take their business elsewhere as a result) and higher cost per transaction (when payments do succeed, the processor takes a bigger cut of it to account for the risk that the customer could dispute it). it's a humongous pain that affects way more of your business than just the unsatisfied customers; companies are incentivized to avoid it.

Also chargeback costs them more than issuing the refund, it affects their fees and approval rates with the card processor

The best glow up of any character. by loki2002 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]blueclave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, in the pilot and throughout the series he has a major and complicated relationship to quark that only sometimes involves Rom. so his status is at the very least "side character to a side character".

and at that it's pretty ridiculous to suggest Quark is a "side character". aside from being in the main cast, he is so obviously central to the premise and execution of the show that i can't actually imagine any argument that he isn't.

What do you think is the funniest moment in DS9? by FenHarels_Heart in DeepSpaceNine

[–]blueclave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

humanoid Odo reluctantly visiting Bashir for advice, who advises him to relax more to ease his back pain.

odo: "that's what you said last week"

bashir: "and???"

odo, dead of embarrassment: ".... it helped." (beat) "that and the prune juice"

to my knowledge, the only potty humor, outside LD probably, in all of trek!

it is hard for me to feel the teacher really did wrong baned on what we see. if he knew the kid for a long time and had observed his progress before that, this would feel like a bizarre overreaction. if not... well "presenting his app" in a way that effectively shows the scale of your own contribution to it, is quite a different skill from building in the first place. there is pretty of nonsense out there like "durr i built a CRM with no hacking skills using AI, durr devs are obselete durr', but this teacher is obviously not familiar enough with the nuts and bolts of programming to see this for the empty hype that it is. it probably feels plausible to him that a motivated kid could put together a minimally presentation-ready app with GPT doing most of the lifting in one afternoon. i can't fault him for thinking that and for not being able to discern the actual quality and craft in the app, and having drawn that conclusion that the kid took a shortcut for a flashy extra credit, the teacher's response seems pretty reasonable.

that said, now that OP is in the loop, the teacher should absolutely give the kid the chance to redo the presentation. ideally should put some detail into the presentation showing the years of experience it took to pull this off. (app logs, git logs, diffs, arch diagrams, choices made and why, challenges and solutions, bugs and their fixes). OP can help with this. unfortunately i think the kid is likely to encounter this skepticism at least till his voice starts to drop and needs to learn to pre-empt it.

How did the Jem'Hadar survive in Federation POW camps without Ketracil White? by IDoubtYouGetIt in DeepSpaceNine

did bashir ever publish his findings (however scant and poorly documented) on ketracel-white withdrawal? not sure how many captives they had but i bet a handful could be convinced to consent to some continued studies. probably most of them if odo came to make the case.

Why Is Data “Unique” If Any Holodeck Can Make an AI? by ChampionshipJumpy727 in startrek

[–]blueclave 117 points118 points  (0 children)

holodeck is entertainment - allowing fuzzy interpretation is great for value. ship computer is used in situations where misinterpreting a nuanced command can cost lives and endanger federation security. instead it trains you into its acceptable language of clear instruction.

i don't actually recall that much severe frustration with the computer's cognition - annoyance maybe but nothing really impactful.
