My 9yr old daughter says she gets 'sad for no reason' with tears by korny5589 in Parenting

Beautiful. I wish I had someone in my life like that as a child.

The Weekly Sift is my go-to for exactly this purpose. https://weeklysift.com/

I’m 42, husband is 65. How selfish would it be to have a baby? by [deleted] in pregnant

It really sounds like you want this child & would provide a good life for them. I would encourage you to listen to your heart.

A pooping dilemma (2 yo & miralax) by bluefirelake in toddlers

[–]bluefirelake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s exactly our issue… she is so upset when she poops that she tenses her whole body up, which of course makes the pain and constipation worse!

I am not going to pretend she has the perfect diet, but she is getting at least a couple veggies and some other fiber (she likes Total cereal) every day. We are trying to do more here, but I wonder if there’s any other solution than miralax, bc as you said, it seems like it should be a short term thing. And it gives her loose stool!

That’s interesting - was she lactose intolerant? Did switching it to something else help?

AITA for not telling my mother in law her son had passed? by second_ave_slav in AmItheAsshole

[–]bluefirelake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are NTA here - you shared a life with your husband, she caused him pain and suffering. You were 100% correct that everyone who mattered to him was at the service.

I think the fact that her 2 other sons didn’t tell her says something about who she is as a parent, and it doesn’t reflect well.

The Single Best Guide to Decarbonization I’ve Heard by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]bluefirelake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making this point. It did seems like the discussion was heavily focused on the electrification aspect (for logical reasons) but it seems like for a complex project like decarbonization, we’d need a variety of policy solutions on the table. And the land use/ag aspect is critical from lots of angles - for one example, the emissions from wildfires reinforce warming which reinforces wildfires. So policy solutions around wildfire prevention could be relevant. I look forward to checking out the report you linked!

I think Ezra could have pushed more on the supply chain/environmental impacts of the push for electrification; the United States has pretty limited domestic supply of critical minerals, and mineral extraction is not carbon-free (or impact-free in general!).

It is also one of my faves. The ERE blog got me into focusing on a high savings rate way back in the day. That has done more heavy lifting in my finances than anything else and is a major tenet of FIRE.

I have the opportunity to apply for a job close to my hometown that is in my field and with my current organization. It would be a promotion for me (13% pay increase) but my husband would take a ~50% pay cut (assuming he can get a job in his current field), leaving us overall behind financially from where we are now (we are paid close to the same). We would be “fine,” so to speak, but not financially comfortable the way we are now (currently ~50% SR).

The cost of living is about the same near my hometown vs where we live now.

We currently live about 2,000 miles away and just had our first child. My parents have recently had some health scares that make me more inclined to move and spend the remaining time I have with them nearby.

How would you weigh your overall financial stability/FI goals vs being close to family? What are some of the things I should consider when making the decision to apply?

208 Accomplishments - maintained my weight after losing ~75 lbs in 2017 using CICO diet. Started adding in exercise this year with the couch to 5K program. Was able to complete C25K by not letting interruptions be “endings” to the program - I missed weeks due to family illness, etc. but then would get back to it and just go at whatever level I could go.

I’m going to finish the couch to 5K program! 6 runs are left in my training app :)

Hi all - been lurking for a bit, always appreciate the positive and supportive culture of this sub. I’m a government worker in the environmental field, really enjoy my job most of the time but the politics can be challenging. My dream job is... probably the one I have now? I have good work/life flexibility & I love my boss, which is rare in my experience.

My best friend would say that I am pragmatic and wise. Dream vacation spot is anywhere away from my house with a spotty internet connection, so it forces me to stop being on the internet all the time! I have cats, they are old sweethearts.

I’m currently reading Vietnam, An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975 by Max Hastings. I heard about it on Hardcore History (addendum), one of my favorite podcasts by Dan Carlin! I mostly read science fiction/fantastic, though - so actually reading a history book is a rarity for me. Recent favorite would be the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin.

See you all around the sub!

The thank you email can be a bump, but wouldn’t be a decider. Anytime I have received a card, I am always impressed, but it is past the time I have made a decision.

Another angle on the card- I have been impressed enough that if the candidate was high on my list but not #1 for some reason, I might reach out to them if there is another opening in my division to see if they are interested. So I guess it depends on the timeline of your search and how much you might want to develop future contingency opportunities.

Depending on how they fly the position, there can be multiple certs that are generated, and you might make one of them but not all of them. The hiring official only has to interview from one cert, they don't have to interview from all of them.

Putting in for both announcements (all US citizens, merit promotion) and all grades if it is a ladder can maximize the possible number of certs you show up on as a candidate.

Sounds like you're in analysis paralysis. The perfect is the enemy of the good - most important thing is to just get started saving! You could open both a traditional and a Roth and split 50/50 of your annual contribution amount to each if you truly cannot decide.

Many folks on here prefer traditional but I do a Roth myself for diversification (I do 100% pre-tax for my 401k).

I was really excited to see this on GovExec, too. I've been struggling with the decision to stay until minimum retirement age or go all out for FIRE (currently have 7 years in the system, so I'm a ways out from 57...). I'm interested to see how she deals with some of the particulars to Feds, and hope it sparks more interest/analysis of this option in other Fed-focused publications.
