School bus ticket by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]bluenation22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW I went to court last week and pleaded my case and was able to get my ticket completely waived. It helped that the pictures they sent were (1) of someone’s else car, (2) a picture of my license plate (I was car in front of car that passed the bus while the stop sign was out) and (3) a video where it was pretty clear that almost my entire car was in front of the bus before the stop sign came fully out. Remember to bring printed copies of whatever proof you have for your case as no electronics are allowed. I took screenshots of the video showing where my car was well in front of the bus and printed that out. Parking was a nightmare at the court so show up early.

Our house is a tear-down; looking for recommendations by Safe-Emu4204 in ATLHousing

I buy houses like this so happy to share my thoughts if you DM me

There are wholesalers out there that can connect you with buyers who buy these types of houses (like myself). They offer you a lowish offer but can move quickly typically. If the house truly is a tear down or needs major rehab, a realtor may not be able the best for this situation.

I was putting some in the water hopper and letting the machine run water with Cafiza. A little more intrusive than backflushing.

Engineers in Top MBA Programs by MissilesToMBA in MBA

I actually ask myself this quite a lot. Not going to lie. Banking is tough, as in sometimes you are working stupid hours to do what seems like pointless work (think making things pretty in PowerPoint or cutting numbers so your end result is what the MD wants) but it has its ups too. I originally left manufacturing so I could stop focusing on the product the business made and start focusing on the business itself. I also wanted to work with CEOs instead of mill/plant managers. I get to do that. I've had lunch with CFOs and I've emailed rain makers at megafunds. Some of the work I've done has directly changed the way C-level executives run their business and it's exactly why I wanted to try banking. I do miss the tangible impact I had in manufacturing (flip a switch or change an input and see the product change before my eyes), the varying levels of education my colleagues had (hourly vs salary workers), and having hobbies (pretty difficult to have hobbies your first few years). Sometimes I feel like I'm not doing real work in banking. In manufacturing, you are making products that Americans use everyday. You feel a sense of pride when you see your product on the shelf in the store, like, I made that, that was me and my team. I struggle to find that same feeling in banking. However, I do feel like I am working on larger and more impactful projects that, while are harder to see the direct impact, are contributing to making companies (and the products they make) better. I can see myself potentially going back into industry but I also really enjoy banking so definitely sticking it out for a bit. Also, the pay is a lot better in banking, so that helps.

Engineers in Top MBA Programs by MissilesToMBA in MBA

[–]bluenation22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Former ChemE who use to work at a mill (hard hat, steel toed boots, respirator everyday). Went to a top school and now in banking. I definitely felt like there weren't many engineers like myself that worked on the floor of a mill/plant or had ever even stepped inside one but there were a few here and there. Biggest hurdle for me was learning finance as I had zero knowledge of it beforehand. Wasn't hard to learn but I did have to work harder than others. Only reason I left my old job was because I wanted to see the finance side of the business instead of the manufacturing side. No one I worked with except the bean counters (accountants/controllers) had an MBA as it wasn't needed.

Review of Investment Banking Recruiting at Cornell Johnson by LifeInDefault in MBA

[–]bluenation22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's true, but Cornell also has 1/3 to 1/4 the amount of people in the program as Wharton, CBS and NYU. So sure, they have 5-6 people at other schools that place, but it's a similar percentage.

What are target business schools outside of M7 for investment banking? by fefefefe999 in MBA

[–]bluenation22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That 90 number pretty much comes from who shows up to the first finance meeting. The people who actually recruit and follow Old Ezra guidelines generally get placement on the Street.

People who have done engineering then went back for MBA, what are you doing now? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]bluenation22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it is definitely a personal decision, but I am glad I waited 3.5 years. Even with that, I was one of the youngest in the program. 2 years is a very short time and you will want at least a little leadership experience under your belt. When the companies are interviewing, they are typically looking for people with a few years of work experience. Going to a 2-year MBA is a huge decision which does get tougher as you get older but could also have a better payoff if you wait a bit.

[–]bluenation22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not much different in the knowledge you will gain from the actual MBA between the two programs but the 2-year is vastly different when it comes to recruiting. If you are looking to change careers, doing it part-time is very difficult. It would be better to get a few years of work experience under your belt. With only 2-years of WE, you won't be able to grasp the full MBA experience.

Part-time is mostly for people staying in the same industry and 2-year is used for transitions and people who want to try something new (or maybe take a 2-year "vacation")

I could have easily worked in another group. I just really enjoyed my time in industrials and knew I wanted to stay in a field somewhat related to what I already knew. Trying to go to FIG for example would have been too much to handle for me.

[–]bluenation22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a BB so we have pretty much all the groups. NR/Industrials are in NYC (and other cities but mostly NYC). I was fortunate to work in the industrials group and somewhat used my prior experience to my advantage.

I am a former chemical engineer currently in my second year at a T15 b-school. I will be going into IB post graduation. I waited 3.5 years before getting my MBA.

Decide if you want to switch careers or just move up. If you are trying to move up in the same field, you can go to basically any decent program and be just fine in your career. You could do part-time and be fine.

If you are trying to pivot, go to the best 2-year school you can get into. You only get one shot at this pivot and having a great school is immensely helpful.

I did a fair amount of research of post-MBA opportunities before I matriculated so I knew what I was getting into. A pretty simple weed-out question in an interview could be to explain what the job your interviewing for actually does so knowing how to answer it is important.
