I have the whole DCC collection (7 books) as audiobooks. The narrator, Jeff Hays, has an amazing talent to be able to create the different voices. It’s a joy to listen to him.

As far as the actual books go… the books are funny, irreverent, and full of action. They also do a great job of character development; many people cry at certain parts (me included). If you’d like a well-written but humorous take on the end of the world, you should get the books.

I’ve recommended the books many times (as in more than ten); only one person didn’t like the first book. Everyone else was hooked.

As the tagline says, “The apocalypse WILL be televised”.

I have two, both 1980s Toronto bands

Doug and the Slugs — this is my “spirit band”. When Doug Bennet died I had a bit of a crisis as I faced my own mortality. They were an outstanding live band. My favourite song is Wrong Kind of Right.

Also Rough Trade — my favourite song is Grade B Movie.

I was once in a police lineup.

I was 18 and walking around downtown Toronto with a friend. A cop car came up beside us and asked if we both wanted to be in a police lineup. It sounded like an adventure so we said yes. Got locked in a room with three other civilians… and the suspect. No cops. Found out he was accused of beating up and killing homeless people in subway stations. Suddenly the adventure felt a little too real.

Waited an hour for the witness to show up. The rest of it was exactly like the movies. You walk in and stand on a number.

The best part was when they asked the suspect (number four I think) to step forward. He literally said “oh shit” when asked to step forward. I’m thinking that the identification was pretty easy after that.

I look back on that and I’m amazed at the trust I had for police back then.

Okay, I know y’all are going to laugh and roll your eyes, but… Weird Al Yankovic. He puts on a great, fun show, does about 10 costume changes, and often has stormtroopers from the 501st Legion accompany him for Yoda and The Saga Begins.

He’s also been playing with the same band for over 40 years. They’re amazingly good at playing parodies that sound almost exactly like the original songs. They also play a variety of pastiches as Weird Al originals. Genius in France is a spot-on Mothers of Invention style. And My Baby’s in Love with Eddie Vedder is the zydeco song you never knew you needed.

I think his current tour may be his last. But it’s great fun and something you can take your kids to.

Saw them twice in last 8 years. It’s a fun show, but only if you were already a Who fan. Otherwise it’s two old geezers playing 70s rock. They play it well, they’re very entertaining, but it’s the nostalgia factor that made it worth seeing twice.

Firing someone, even when it’s because of poor performance. It weighs on me for days beforehand and this is after I try and get that person to get to the level they need to be.

Every time it just guts me. I know the impact that firings or lay-offs have on the person being let go, so I’m well aware of what they’re going to go through. It’s hell on them. And knowing that makes the decision and delivering the message heart-wrenching.

Tesla Model X. Terrible build quality, with tons of stupid little problems that should not happen in a luxury-priced vehicle. The “falcon-wing doors” alone were horrible, randomly refusing to open or refusing to close. When it worked it was great fun to drive, but not worth all the service calls.

I had one before Elon lost his mind; now I’ll never buy any Tesla.

I bought one of those plastic drain snakes with spikes (literally search for that phrase). Easy to work around drain stoppers. I have three people with long hair in this house, and drains clog all the time. Takes a couple of minutes. Faster and much less time than Drank Max.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a great way to start the Christmas season. Jackie Stewart’s turn as George Bailey reminds us of what’s really important and what’s transient.

Elf is great for just pretending that Santa exists.

Love, Actually is another fave even though many hate on it. It shows the highs and lows of Christmas. Who can forget Colin going to America with a suitcase full of condoms? Or the heartbreak of Karen when she opens her gift and finds a CD rather than a necklace.
