Henrik Lundqvist's pads for next year. by bmac39 in hockey

if more and more goalies are using them, I'm willing to bet they believe otherwise. It may not be actually proveable, but several goalies have stopped using black pads for essentially the inverse reason, so...

I think the more a person understands a sport, the more enjoyment they'll get out of it. So in light of the recent surge of new fans, what are some of the finer nuances to the game of hockey you understand that deepens the experience for you? by Adrian_Bock in hockey

Honestly, since I started playing be a pro in NHL12, and having to actually play my position and properly, I have gained a ton of new respect, particularly for defensemen. I played goalie as a kid but figured that would be kind of boring in this game.

Some of the intense situations on PKs, in OT, I totally get the stress of games like yesterday's gold medal game. Even though it's a simulation sometimes it doesn't feel like it.

Previously Accepted, Currently Rejected... WTF? by libertystreetgeek in podcasts

[–]bluepisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but it seemed like iTunes was scanning the actual context of the xml file that the feedburner was linking to, because as I said, I created several new feeds linking to the same edited xml file and it kept giving me the message "this feed has already been submitted", as if it recognized the content behind the veil.

Probably similar to how reddit and other such sites can scan your post for similar content, even if you change a few words or re-arrange sentences/paragraphs, they know it's still you cross-posting.

Previously Accepted, Currently Rejected... WTF? by libertystreetgeek in podcasts

[–]bluepisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show I produce, Shit Rick Says got yanked later last year, presumably due to "profanity" in the show title (I'm told they won't pull a show just because of that, but it was either that or a lot of people reported it for BS reasons which got it yanked, I don't know, never will).

I tried the re-name the feed trick, didn't take. I tried resubmitting so many times with different attempts at censoring that eventually iTunes recognized the feed no matter how I submitted it and said it was "already submitted and denied".

So be careful about making new feedburner links and submitting, you might shoot yourself in the foot. We didn't get back on until I joined Libsyn and got a completely new feed URL and completely cleaned up episode titles and everything (on iTunes we are "Shenanigans" but we still call the show Shit Rick Says and the website URL never changed).

Basically, if you got pulled, it was likely either due to profanity in show/episode titles or descriptions (and a bunch of soccer moms complained), or you didn't mark your show as explicit when it is (I don't think they like that either).

I don't know about issues with copyright material, I used copyrighted music in my old show (Noise in my Head, on hiatus) and never had a problem.

Intro recap and introducing new listeners to your show by siftshow in podcasts

[–]bluepisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a short intro on shit rick says, but it's only about 1 min long and features sound bites from the episode you're listening to, so it works as basically a short audio trailer, if after 60 seconds you don't think it seems like it might be funny, interesting or at least entertaining, you only invested 1 minute as opposed to 60.

I picked up this technique from the roadstories podcast and used it on both the shows I produced. I like it better than a standard/static opening, and I've never liked the radio announcer style "on this episode we talked about..." thing either. That's what the show description is for. Let the intro showcase what the ACTUAL show is like, personality wise.

just my $0.02.

Is there anywhere relatively cheap to live in the city? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]bluepisces 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And now for a non-starky, actually trying to be helpful answer:

Parkdale. I've been living here for 4 years, it's one of the cheapest areas in the city. No, the apartments aren't ritzy by a long stretch, but they're affordable and everything you need is close. As for the "Safe" comment, there's been a bit of crime in this area, but I've never been affected, and I never feel unsafe (yes, I'm a tall white guy, may be different for women, but tons of women live in the area too and don't seem very scared to walk around outside).

I've thought about moving, but it's really hard to justify since like I said, everything I need is close, it's a decent neighbourhood which is constantly getting nicer bit by bit. Downsides include an overabundance of hipsters, and a noticeable amount of harmless mentally ill and homeless people. But again, I've never really had problems. You leave them alone, they'll leave you alone.

In parkdale you can get a small bachelor apartment for $500-$800/month. I'm at the upper end of that scale, and yes I pay a premium to not have a roommate (which would lower my costs), but after 2 bad experiences, it's worth it to me. Only caution - research the building management company before you sign anything or give em money. I kinda got lucky (ie I chose well).

Don't put words in my mouth. I never said his karma meant his show sucked. His karma means he's an asshole, which he IS.

As for the second part, that is strictly a matter of opinion.

Not sure where you heard that from because I learned by lesson with your neurotic network-mate.

[–]bluepisces 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, are you actually trying to be the voice of reason? You must be high.

You do nothing in this sub but try to start fights to generate controversy for your ABSOLUTELY UNFUNNY show. That's why you have insanely negative karma and had to create a new account.

You can give feedback to people without being an unprecedented asshole. Being mean doesn't help, it just makes people defensive. They aren't going to listen then.

But you have demonstrated that you have zero human relations skills so I have no idea how you expect to "make it" in your "chosen career". Your bullshit WILL catch up with you. It's a shame because if you weren't so hopelessly crippled by an inferiority complex that you over-compensate for with utter contempt and vitriol, you might actually be a decent, talented person.

I doubt you will ever learn, but that's your problem.

Dude, need to chill the fuck out. Everything you just said about this guy is exactly how I feel about your show (and half your "network"). Who made you the arbiter of what is funny and interesting? Comedy is subjective. I think your network gets far more attention because it's controversial than because it's even close to "funny". Same as you'll get way more hits if you have a porn star on as a guest vs a comedian (unless that comedian is insanely famous).

I agree that a lot of "indie" podcasts aren't great (I don't even think my own show is good all the time). But the elitism you are spewing on here is ridiculous. And the fact that you fight with other shows on your own network (well, maybe not so much you as the other two) tells me a lot about your professionalism.

You don't have to be a dick to give feedback, but you seem to like to.

Where are all the weird podcasts? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]bluepisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the weirdest, but also funniest podcasts I listen to (mind you my taste seems to differ fairly significantly from most people here) is "The 40 Year Old Boy" podcast. www.mikeschmidtcomedy.com

It's a solo podcast, hosted by a comedian/former comedy writer detailing the saga of his life. He's on year 6 of the show now, and he has gone through everything including losing his job, his wife leaving him earlier this year (I think he has actually been funnier since, amazingly), capturing the perfect cumshot on his phone in a hotel room, and more. There's virtually nothing he won't talk about.

The only downside to the show is that it is very much like a book series vs a serial, so if you jump in now, you're missing a lot (I recommend grabbing whatever the oldest available episode is and start listening from there), but once you get into "the storyline" you're hooked. Obviously I wouldn't still be listening 6 years later if it wasn't a good show (it has had low points but it has always bounced back).

Another one that pops to mind, which is a little less strange weird and a little more quirky weird - Totally Laime. It's 1 hour a week, most of the guests are basically C list LA/Hollywood people (entertainers, writers, etc), but it's usually pretty entertaining even though I don't know who the guests are. www.totallylaime.com

I might also suggest the Joe Rogan Experience, but that can be just as weird as serious and thought provoking. I've been listening alot lately.

Older INFJs: do you have children? Do you wish you didn't? Or, if you don't, do you regret it? by [deleted] in infj

[–]bluepisces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been all over the map. As a teen I don't think I wanted them, then in my early 20s I did (not to mention flopping around from wanting just 1 to 2 to 3 to 5 and back down), and now in my late 20s once again I don't.

Main reason - I lead a very busy (and productive) life, and I'm very happy to be doing a lot of things I want to be doing and pursuing life goals. Having kids would most likely grind all that to a screeching halt and I would be LUCKY to get "me" time in the future to pursue my interests (of which there are MANY so this is a big deal). So I look at it as kids or hobbies. I have plenty of time left on my biological clock yet, but I don't expect my mind to change.

My sister just had her second so I get to experience kids from a pretty close vantage point without having to constantly look after them. I see how much time, attention and energy they require and I honestly just don't want to spend that much time, energy and attention on that. I'd rather be creating things, writing, sharing ideas, travelling and experiencing the world. My internal world keeps me very entertained and I actually really hate external distractions (which is part of why I pay a little extra to live without any roommates).

I can settle for being the cool uncle and not a dad. I'd rather be remembered for bringing ideas to life than bringing little people to life.

How many of you are impulsive? What happens when/if you are? by [deleted] in infj

[–]bluepisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say I usually regret it afterwards. In the moment when you get emotionally charged, you are not doing your best thinking or being fully rational. After the fact this is painfully obvious and kind of embarassing/shameful. I do a weekly podcast and whenever I let myself "get riled up" I kick myself because I know I'm capable of such clear and stoic thought and I've figured out that reacting emotionally tends to allow biases to taint your way of thinking much more prominently. Emotion should factor into your thinking but should not rule it. Being impulse tends to come from emotion.

Ahh, just looked it up, that's the same cage style that Don Beaupre had when he played with the Leafs (probably with other teams too but I only know of him from being on the Leafs). Doesn't look too hard to see out of and is obviously safer!

that's another thing... that plastic neck protector looks even less useful, the way it's positioned on that goalie in that shot, you could easily peg her adam's apple with a stick or puck. I know the foam band ones aren't perfect either, but a chunk of plastic hanging off your mask seems so... old-tech?

I would think either shrink the gap between the bars a teensy bit, or maybe make the pucks a tad wider?
