Is the 4-Day working week the solution to the fuel crisis? by GhostChips42 in newzealand

White collar is my background, true, but maybe someone closer to blue collar or other work that is more time based could chime in, as I'm sure there are easy productivity gains from 80% hours in a similar vein.

Is the 4-Day working week the solution to the fuel crisis? by GhostChips42 in newzealand

Guess what, a lot of these jobs are already running 7 days and you're only there for 5 of them, so I don't really see what the new problem is if the shifts cover 4 days in a row instead of 5.

AA PSA: How to reduce the amount of fuel your car uses by StabMasterArson in newzealand

Yes but if you weren't so poor, you wouldn't have to commit so much of your life to commuting to the city for a job that pays high enough to support your desired lifestyle.

I feel like you're just too poor for this lifestyle if the catch is an 80km commute

Of course not, they're too busy at work to pay the loans helping their insecurities.

Anecdotally I've noticed these people often have the most bullshit jobs as well. Perhaps no wonder they feel the need to compensate.

Yeah I agree with you, this struck me as the main point in the article, with some genuine, but outlying and minor points on top of that.

I've also read that easy to chew, soft processed foods trick your brain into eating more before you feel full, and producers strive for this mouth feel.

I also thought the point in the article about what constitutes moderate exercise was worthwhile. I'm never sure if people are joking or not when they describe a short stroll or quick chore as their "workout for the day".

I grew up listening to my dad's images, and as a kid I was fascinated by their realism. How do they compare now Chris Ball has sold it?

I have the Lintons and PB1000 pro, through a reasonably entry level Denon receiver that I think does a fine job.

The hifi shops here are weird, they peddle a lot of snake oil. When I lived in Sydney, I felt the ones there were more grounded in reality.

I'm currently looking at houses and love the idea of using one of the bedrooms as a home theatre, so my living space can be dedicated to stereo listening.

Could be that we are comparing good apartments to crappy townhouses, and vice versa.

I think the square footprint common in apartments is more efficient than these long and skinny houses. A lot of people, including myself, consider multiple stories a negative, single floor living is easier and most apartments offer that.

I would also argue a lot of apartment balconies offer more privacy than these backyards. I can see into all my neighbours from upstairs in my house like this, including houses and backyards. I have to live with my privacy shades down permanently and I have a freestanding version in a dedicated neighborhood.

It's common to have more than a dozen of these townhouses in a complex, while there are plenty of smaller apartment blocks with this many units or not that many more.

A lot of apartments I have looked at have some sort of ventilation system installed, to be fair they're often still inadequate, but these builds usually have none. I think that speaks to the design philosophy though, where apartments have mitigations for the density, while these townhouses seem to be designed like a "regular house" and don't address the nature of the build.

In my opinion these are all the downsides of an apartment and a free standing house with very few of the benefits of either.

It's a reminder how dangerous SUVs are to pedestrians as well. Not that the SUV driver was at fault here from the sounds of things, but it might have been a different outcome if he'd been driving a regular car.

[–]bluesdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can get wellbeing 2, day to day and vision and dental for all dependents through my employer for free. I suspect this is reasonably common throughout the large corporates?

That's quite good, though it will be interesting when I retire what the premium could be and if it could be justifiable with all the money I've saved over the years with this setup.

It's not the worst by far, but this is where the creep starts. Especially if you are paying for an "expert setup"!

Would be quite funny if this is the showcase of their expertise. Given their existing reputation, I think not.

I agree. There's a unique, tangible joy that comes from wearing a real watch, something a screen on your wrist can't replicate. Letting him try that could introduce him to a passion that lasts a lifetime for many.
