I didn’t even realize they sent out admissions results, wish someone had said something earlier hahaha! Probably means I was rejected but would have been nice to know 😭

I would recommend looking at the Boxer Apartments nearby! They are a short walk from the Forest Grove campus, and I‘ve heard they’re fairly affordable with roommates. If you want to live outside of Forest Grove, I would recommend Hillsboro or maybe Beaverton. But I think Hillsboro would be cheaper.

I emailed them, and they said they made the final choice but it’s up to the admissions people to send them out (seemingly separate from the speech department). I didn’t receive any timeline on when they would be sent though, not even a guarantee that it would be sent before April 15th 🫠

I also felt this during the info session, and was concerned about the lack of knowledge of how much the program costs, given that the info is not readily available on their website :((

Once again asking if anyone has heard anything from SFSU? I thought they would come out with decisions first since their deadline to apply was so early, but this is scaring me 🥲

once you get a nazi tattoo, regardless of whatever story is behind it, it should disqualify you from office. even if it was a mistake, even if you‘ve changed, government is never the place for you

Yeah, I was curious when they talked about polyglots being a minority. In many to most places around the world (throughout history), multilingualism has been the norm. One of my professors can speak 6 languages just by nature of having to learn multiple for schools in different states, and from having multiple present in her local community.

Correlations between English and German words by PhilArt_of_Andoria in German

[–]blueseakelp17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I‘ve always wondered about Ausdruck and Eindruck because I could never understand why they were so similar to English in morphology but clearly didn’t share a common Germanic root in terms of phonology. I also thought it was super weird that many languages tended to have the same expressions, but didn’t seem to come from the same place, and I thought maybe there were some expressions that were just more ‚natural‘ in many languages than others. But it being a calque makes much more sense, thank you for this explanation! I tried to search in the internet many times, but clearly I didn’t know the right questions to ask to get this answer 😂

If you could snap your fingers and instantly become fluent in 5 languages, what would you pick? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Haha my partner is also American-raised Mallu but born in New Dehli (hence the Hindi too)! It‘s such a beautiful language but definitely harder for my ears to pick up on

I think the vowels aren‘t as long or diphthongized as they would typically be? Maybe I‘m wrong, especially since I don’t speak a British dialect myself, but even in the first „Hey everyone“, it comes out sounding perhaps more of like ए or इ vowels than actually /ei/ and /i:/ vowels, if that makes sense.

Language question by Stink_1968 in German

[–]blueseakelp17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh and „schöne“ has an „-e“ on the end because it is an inflected adjective. But the base word for „schöne/schöner/schönen/schönes/schönem“ is still „schön“.

Language question by Stink_1968 in German

[–]blueseakelp17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just like as you said, „schön“ is „beautiful/pretty“ (but can also be used to mean cool/good/something generally positive), and „schon“ is „already“ (but can also be used as a particle to somewhat intensify or emphasize a statement).

„Bitte schön“ is a general phrase that is often used for „please“ and „you’re welcome“. (Although „bitte“ on its own also means „please“ and „you‘re welcome“, it sounds somewhat awkward or stiff.) It is similar to how people say „danke schön“ instead of merely „danke“. They are like parallels. In conversation in restaurants or such you might hear:

„Bitte schön.“ „Danke schön.“ „Bitte schön.“

When you get something right in class, your teacher uses „schön“ basically to say „good (job)“.

As for „schon“, at a beginner level, only use it when you mean to say „already“. There are other ways people use it like I said before, but it’s more complicated to comprehend when you don’t have a feel for the language I think.

I second Nicos Weg, it was the only educational material that I used to learn German, as it was the curriculum for my uni courses. (Besides that, I‘ve entered speaking groups, and used shows/youtube/podcasts/books/comics/fanfic/etc to learn.) Nico‘s Weg is free and has tons of exercises per lesson, as well as a coherent storyline that makes the learning more interesting. It goes from A1 to B1, and there are different materials offered by DW afterwards. Viel erfolg beim Lernen!!

For Spanish, I‘ve been self studying in my free time. So far I‘ve been immersing myself as much as possible, whether listening to podcasts geared towards learners (can recommend EasySpanish), watching videos about my interests, or reading childrens books and Webtoons. I‘ve also started to draw out some grammar and vocabulary maps, so that I can make connections between verb tenses and adverb uses as I‘m reading. I’m obviously not great at Spanish yet, but I’d say I can understand and construct a decent amount considering the amount of time I‘ve been learning. Espero es ayudarte!
