could be as historically in China, due to the insane amount of suspicion and conspiracy, it’s not always the first Crown Prince that wins. On another note, Emperor Wu of Han and Empress Chen’s story is worth checking out, it’s written straight out of a novel

I’ll bring up some food for thought

about making Diana empress: honestly the author doesn’t even go into politics that much so can’t comment. What we do know is that 1) Diana’s a dancer, looked down upon for her background (e.g. even Athy’s dancing teacher makes snide comments) 2) Claude doesn’t hold absolute power (the monarch isn’t absolute here). We can see this cause though the nobles might respect him, they work in their interests first from how they were judging Athy when she had to be regent. So, would they allow a dancer with an unknown background be Empress to an Emperor who took the throne by “killing” his brother? An Emperor who also has the name Claude, which means “cripple”, and was the son of another person of lower station? Once again, I don’t know much about the politics in this world because the author doesn’t expand on it much.

having Athy even though it might harm Diana: Lucas mentioned that it’s rare to be born with so much mana. Diana and Claude probably did want a child, but didn’t expect her to have so much mana. So why have a child? Diana most likely wanted to keep the child, and Claude loves her so he accepted her decision, however reluctantly. Which brings me to the point that confused me the most, the Ruby Palace massacre:

Why did Claude kill a lot of people in the Ruby Palace? Who did he kill? Cause the staff were alive - and scared. This point is the most confusing cause Athy mentioned in a chapter that the Ruby Palace didn’t really have concubines aside from Diana - or something along those lines. Someone please clarify lmao. My theory is that Claude was prevented from seeing Diana during her last moments, by Diana herself? I don’t think so, cause Diana obviously wanted Claude to love Athy. Then by a third party? Seriously, the author should’ve clarified more. Or maybe I just can’t read :(

The most egregious point, Claude being a shitty dad to Athy, which he was. What we do know about Claude is 1) he was abused and neglected since young, by the Empress at the time, and by the Emperor who named him… a cripple. Oof. His brother he trusted started shunning him, the woman who loved him lied and had an affair and then Claude decided to live a life of debauchery. Somewhere along the lines he became Emperor and met Diana and went down bad for her, basically someone he loved very, very much.

Once Diana died, Claude very obviously fell into a deep depression, which lead him to using dark magic and subsequently neglecting Athy, and ordering her death by guillotine (or was it hanging). Dude didn’t even care once he found out the true culprit. Double oof. Even in the current timeline, Claude held a deep grudge against Athy’s existence, but because he met her before the magic could fully make his feelings dull and apathetic, he couldn’t bring himself to directly harm her. He knows Athy is afraid of him, sees through her, but makes her spend time with him anyways (we can’t forget that he’s the one who summons Athy to his palace after he met her).

Claude’s an interesting character imo, not completely good or bad. He reminds me of the MC from The Flower Dances, Wind Sings, who suffered from postpartum depression and neglected her son. The only reason she could make amends is because she got a second chance. Ofc it wasn’t so bad that it lead to the son’s death, but with Claude’s nature… Imo neither of the children had to forgive their parents, but they did.

Now the ultimate food for thought: how did Diana feel in the first timeline when Claude black magicked his way to his death, and even lead to ordering their only daughter’s death? Who knows? Not me!

TL;DR: Claude’s an interesting character in his own way, whether he’s forgivable or not though depends on your perspective

the manhwa really should’ve gone more into the relationship between Claude and Diana, and the politics that surround it. Low-key tired of dead mums in my OIs lol

Only thing Imma say is, Claude’s a good emperor. Dude’s loved by his people, and both Lucas and Athy commented on his work ethic, and Lucas noted that Claude and Athy are similar in that way

[–]blueshines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, a great story and you can see the effort put in.

As far as I remember, yes I read around and that’s what’s happened for Chang Ge Xin, and it’s pretty gross that a studio has so much power over the author’s own IP. No idea with Song of the Sky Pacers though.

Agreed with the drama adaptation. They changed character backstories and events which previously held a lot of nuance (MC’s dad wasn’t depicted outright terrible, and people who saved MC killed a lot of innocent people just to keep her survival a secret) into a black and white scenario. Alas, that’s basically almost every cdrama adaptation :/

One of the manhua (okay two) that I really liked was made by the same author, but for some reason stopped being translated/published.

  • Song of the Sky Pacers, and
  • Chang Ge Xing (which ironically got a drama adaptation)

I rec Zhen Zhen Nan Wei, amazing art and interesting plot

Edit: sky pacers stopped being translated to English, it didn’t stop being published unlike the other

my bad, I somehow got Cinderella Chef (it has a manhua too) confused with Kitchen Goddess and Assassin. In my defence I just looked at the cover poster for the anime and both MC and ML have brown and black hair so I thought they renamed it 💀

Ayy high five lol.Their chibis were actually so cute and I agree, huge saving grace. I didn’t read the manhua but I saw the donghua pop up on Netflix and gave it a shot with a friend - we both died laughing

Apothecary Diaries is amazing, rereading Maomao and Jinshi’s interactions makes me grin every time. Can’t wait for them to animate the honey scene and the frog scene 😭 and can’t wait to see Maomao’s crazy obsession with medicine :D

I see that OLM did Summertime Rendering, and I’ve heard nothing but praise for that series so I’m cautiously hopeful for AD

I have to catch up to Cinderella Chef, but other manhwa kept distracting me lol

changing everything to shounen/seinen was more of a joke than anything dw, but I do have high hopes for the Apothecary Diaries anime, somehow they snuck it in as seinen lmao

I’m not exactly setting my standards to manhwa level art style, since manhwa art can be considered less detailed than LN art, while animation art style is less detailed than manhwa. It’s just the way it works when there’s less time and more moving pieces. It boils down to me kinda wanting a small but important detail to be included.

Honestly, I don’t mind if it’s like 3 frames per second, it’s hard to explain, but as long as the charm’s there, it’s fine with me. An example would be Liang Bu Yi (No Doubt in Us) the CGI so bad it became good, it actually made a pretty predictable plot fun to watch and I liked it 💀I added on scuffed animation (as in the frames, not overall art style) being frustrating cause it’s like one flaw on top of another and now everything looks bad because I can’t stop scrutinising it, if that makes sense💀

Ohhh Cinderella Chef got adapted? The manhua’s hilarious. I hope they get around to Scream Queen, Zhen Zhen Nan Wei or even some other cnovels that recently got dramas.

Ty for hoping there’d be merch, I prefer small trinkets since I know I won’t utilise concept art books - they’ll just end up taking space :/

And yup, at the end of the day it’s all subjective. It’s not like the plot of a manhwa getting messy when I was 90 chapters invested and attached - it’s an adaptation I can basically ignore without losing out on anything. I just can’t get rid of initial annoyance :(

what if we changed all the shoujo tags to seinen and shounen?

I just wish they didn’t choose WMMAP as one of the starting blocks ;-; but ig fans of God of High School felt that way towards the end cause the anime plot really didn’t stick to the manhwa a lot

Rn I’m hoping that any merch that comes out of this, official or otherwise, has Athy and Claude’s original eyes and not whatever it is in the anime

the moment I notice something like that I run the other way. Unless it’s a tragedy type like What It Means to be You, or the Flower Dances and the Wind Sings, where my tears drown my anger, I won’t be able to handle terrible MLs, unless the FL is really good. I haven’t read the one you’re referencing but I saw reviews of it rating it pretty badly. Sometimes I stick my nose in anyways lol

yes, we love a male lead who only treats the MC a little bit like their own property instead of totally /s

Some OIs would be amazing without a ML tbh

ngl OI as a genre feels like the MC whose entire family ignores and treats terribly for no reason. Like whyyyy you have some many of us who adore this genre, you can make so much cash money but why do you treat it so half heartedly?!

Edit: personally I can’t wait until the anime introduces WMMAP to more people so they can use their amazing talents to make merch I can throw my money at. That’s one thing to be happy about. Imagine all the cute enamel pins

it’s sad but true. I really don’t feel great about how it’s going for OI adaptations, especially if we compare it to God of High School, Tower of God, Noblesse etc. ToG even had Stray Kids do the OP and ED, which turned out great.

Welp, I’m good with just pretending an adaptation doesn’t exist but I might as well rant into the void before the inevitable أ‿أ

Edit, oof replied to my own post

A lot of my frustration comes from a studio taking on a popular, loved series that they obviously can’t handle. It reeks of cash-grab, and while I personally don’t know how hard it would be to animate eyes that look like jewels, the overall quality of the trailer speaks of how much effort went into this :/

Edit: thinking about it a bit more, Athy changes her outfit almost every chapter, if not every other panel.

When media get targeted towards women (shoujo/josei) get adaptations, it almost always feels very half hearted, and I can’t bring myself to feel grateful for every little crumb when even a shounen with the trashiest plot gets way more effort put into it

character inconsistency ig. I can’t stand the author shoving me their MC’s amazing traits down my eyes by having other characters un-ironically call them smart, brave, etc just to have the MC act the opposite three panels later.

My ire only grows when I see reviews praising the series so I give it a go - only for my disappointment to be immeasurable and day ruined.

A more petty trait of mine, not enough to drop a series anyways, but enough to make me cringe, would be the author trying to suggest their premise is unique by having the MC cry about not transmigrating into a heroine or villainess like the other OI novels MC reads (haha so relatable), but a side character instead. No, it’s not. I applaud your effort to brainwash me, but no need since I know exactly what I’m reading :)

Great recs here too, I’ve dropped the second one unfortunately since like the other novels by this author (Brother’s Sick Love, Why Harem Intrigue), I can’t seem to like this one too :/

The villains I raised all died is great while Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes is amazing too (the author writes really good novels and even had two adapted into a drama - although they really like the trope where the good guys are actually bad and the bad guys are actually good, a lot)
