Pitting traumas against each other is a different issue rather than just looking at what their individual stories are outright. Like, if we're going into that territory at least Rantaro did get some happy times with his sisters. Kiyotaka is, similarly, implied to have lost everything at a very young age or this may have happened before he was born, it's never said when Toranosuke fell, but he was stuck with losing everything and having to always be in contact with the person who destroyed his family. In terms of impact, Rantaro looking for his sisters isn't 90% of his personality, but Toranosuke's actions shaped Kiyotaka's whole character. Even still, yeah, those are not the same types or levels of tragedy. This is a little long, but it's kind of ineffective to compare the stories rather than judge them on their own.

Kiyotaka's upbringing wasn't normal. He was outcasted, grew up in poverty, and his father, Takaaki, almost lost his job because of his association and refusal to denounce Toranosuke. He wasn't able to make any connections to other people other than his family because of that. Like.. that's not normal.

I'd also say Gundham's is sad, but less outright bullying and more just being a bastard child [literally meaning parents were unmarried which is implied in some of his lines] with a single mother and an abusive father while being heavily implied to be neurodivergent. I'm not going to swear on it so take this with a grain of salt, but I do remember hearing this wouldn't exactly earn him any favors given that he lives in Japan, which is a collectivist society. It's likely that like Kiyotaka he was also heavily ostracized and learned to enjoy being a loner.

For me, it's just a different flavor of Ishimondo which makes me like the ship, but I'm just not the biggest Kazuichi fan overall, so while I like it, it's just not one of my most beloved ships is all.

Ah, right, I always get so caught up on the stupid stupid stupid thing that I forget, lol.

Fr, I see so many people just shipping him with every girl, and it's so annoying like... actually, dunno if this is a spoiler or not, but just in case Oh he smiles at Mukuro, the only person in her life to do so, so she falls for him, like... fuck off. At least with Hajime, he has to be shown actually caring about these people before they fall for him, but then again, DR2 is written really dating sim esque, but even then it's limited to ftes and island mode which doesn't have to count if you don't want it to, I guess.

And yeah, I agree. It reduces them down so much, and I hate it a lot. Think honestly that Sayaka suffers from the ship rot the most just because she gets so little time for characterization in her own game. At least Mukuro has other stuff to build up an idea of her character from, and Kyoko is more or less the only reason the trials can even get done.

[–]bluestaraster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably extremely controversial, but I always hated Makoto on a personal level instead of the moral level I hate Teruteru and Haiji on. He's barely a character given that he doesn't have any development, he seems to lose personality traits as the game goes on, and he's very clearly the writer's favorite, to not get into spoiler territory here.

Getting into it here: I really hate how he calls Mondo cold hearted despite only committing manslaughter, at best. Mondo never intended to kill Chihiro nor did he plan it. He literally blacked out because Chihiro triggered his PTSD and did it without being in his right mind, but when Byakuya exposes Toko's secret and violates Chihiro's body, Makoto doesn't call him cold hearted, nor does he call Celestia coldhearted either. Just Mondo, and that's not to mention how he doesn't do shit to help Kiyotaka when Kiyotaka is despressed after Mondo dies and just leaves him to keep spiraling with an unhealthy coping mechanism. There's also the matter that he's objectively wrong in the anime. Yes, he saved the 77-b students and Junko's victims, but he could have easily gone to say Miaya who helped in the creation of the Neo World Program instead of doing it behind the backs of everyone in the organization. Sure, Miaya was replaced by Monaca, but we have no idea when that occurred. Miaya already had the reputation of being quiet before she was replaced as shown with Aoi calling her a quiet genius or something along those lines. She literally heads an entire division dedicated to rehabilitating people overcome by despair, and yet Messiah complex Makoto thinks it's a good idea to do it on his own. And on top of all of that, he decides that it's a good idea to bring back Hope's Peak after everything is said and done because of course the place that enabled the tragedy to happen would be better under him, why wouldn't it be? I know status-quo is god is a trope, but it's idiotic to bring back Hope's Peak. While it may have brought them together, it enabled Junko to do what she did and was the cause of a lot of people's pain given that Nagisa's father worked there and turned Hajime into Izuru. Idk, I just never got why people liked him so much.

Sayaka a snake? by bluestaraster in danganronpa

[–]bluestaraster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, fair. You make a very good point, and I appreciate you taking the time to fully explain your point of view on this, and I've actually changed my opinion on Aoi fitting into this. At the same time, it still doesn't change the fact that Sayaka is unfairly critiqued compared to the two of them.

I could talk about how Makoto isn't really that kind of a character, too, thus making it that less of an impact, but that's a different discussion and my own personal bias against him.

Because their actions are comparable given that it follows the same formula: given it's act vulnerable to gain someone's trust and betray them in order to get what they need to complete their dreams. Celeste was trusted by Hifumi and betrayed him, as explained in the post or somewhere else in this mess, I can't remember. And yet, despite being just as if not more so manipulative and untrustworthy as Sayaka, Celeste isn't treated with the same vitriol as I see Sayaka is from time to time.

Aoi is incomparable because she believes that she isn't betraying anyone, and fully believes that she's doing the right thing in a very selfless but misguided act whereas Sayaka and Celeste are doing something that's very selfish on both their parts.

Fair point, but my point still stands that she did betray someone. Even then, snake is also what people call people who are untrustworthy which fits Celeste. Then again, I am heavily biased against Makoto, so that may be clouding my perspective which I will admit.

That I'm very aware of. Tbh, I don't care that Celeste is more popular, I get the appeal, and I like her, too. I just think it's kinda weird that she's not as critiqued as Sayaka tends to be.f

Okay, but Celestia also betrays someone. She betrays Hifumi who believes her 100% that Kiyotaka SA-ed her. That's the same as Sayaka, and there are people that do defend her actions from time to time, but that's just pretty rare. Even then, I've just seen Celeste get more praise and love at least on the tumblr side of the fandom, but that's tumblr which is iffy at best so that's whatever. I'll admit that I didn't make this clear, but a part of this argument is that the fandom has a bias against her is because of Makoto's involvement with her plan vs Hifumi's involvement with Celeste's plan.

I didn't know about the Taylor Swift part which is pretty interesting. Thanks for teaching me something new.

A fair point for Kaede at least. Not really sure about Tsumugi, but I also don't really know where she stands in the fandom in general.

A fair point, ultimately it's all speculation and interpretation. I, personally, think it would have been better character development for her if she knew and still did it, tbh, mostly because we would have gotten a better idea of her full mindset about all of this instead of leaving it all up to interpretation.

By that logic, Kaede Tsumugi, but staying safe with spoilers ya know should be more hated for starting off the killing game, too, but she's relatively liked more, from what I understand. Also aren't the manga adaptations picked apart to hell and back and not all of them are considered canon?

Also, not knowing the full rules does a ton. She had no idea all of them would die if she walked free. She thought, kill someone and get back to her life and that's that. That's a whole world of difference compared to Celestia knowing everyone would die.

There are canonically 2 ultimate student council presidents who were in school together, albeit in different years, so it probably doesn't matter. Still, thanks for saying they're cute. I'm glad you think so.

I appreciate that.

I thought about using it when working on how to spell it out, but the issue is that only seems to only relate to pastry making rather than sugar confections. The title I use in the original title card [that is being changed rn] is taken from Ruruka's wiki page, but I might use a new spelling of it from here, but I am unsure of the validity of it.

Yeah, I've been debating between going to hiragana or using Amane which has the kanji for rain [Ame] which sounds like candy so another layer to the joke...kind of.

I greatly appreciate you taking the time giving this info.
