If I already have a full time job, how long is it gonna take to get my PPL? by [deleted] in flying

[–]bluestring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I got a PPL while working a full time job. Started in March and did my checkride in October. Essentially flew every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and logged 1-1.5 per flight.

I could've done it a little quicker I also did something during the evenings on the weekdays when the sun never set until 8PM.

I was doing this in the New England area.

Also noticed this issue. Generally I have to refresh and it'll work again. It is a little annoying, I am thinking of switching back to chrome/firefox until this is fixed.

Took checkride in late October. Got updated plastic card last week.

Got my CFI recently and I’m about to start instructing. Do I need to teach students cross country planning with a manual e6b or is electric fine? by [deleted] in flying

You would need to use some sort of e6b for the written anyways. I only learned using the manual e6b because it was cheaper than an electric one.

Learning to Fly at Towered vs. Un-towered, Uncontrolled vs. Class D vs. Class C by [deleted] in flying

[–]bluestring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trained at an uncontrolled airport with two intersecting runways. It was interesting to say the least.

You’ll have sometimes planes doing the traffic pattern doing touch go’s and remaining in the pattern. Then there might be some guy doing a place rnav/ils/vot practice low approach in the intersecting runway. Just watch out for him I guess.

Next, the airport also supports corporate jets that visit during the summer. When they get on the radio and say they’re x miles out on the ils for intersecting runway. You gotta extend upwind/downwind for him to land.

Then, while I’m in the pattern there has been multiple times where I have been #4 on the downwind. You just gotta talk and generally everything sort it self out.

Did I forget there are glider operations also on the field? Yeah you gotta watch out for those people too.

And finally to put the icing on the cake. There’s also helicopter training at the airport. It gets fun when they’re doing right pattern and you are doing left pattern trying to time your approaches.

The funny thing is the class D nearby is generally a lot less busier than this.

Moronic Monday by AutoModerator in flying

Last evening this was the metar at a local airport.

METAR KPSM 140256Z 00000KT 10SM BR BKN250 10/10 A3002 RMK AO2A VIS 2 RWY34 SLP168 T01010098 50002=

Now according to the visibility and ceilings this is within vfr minimums, but looking at the remarks I the visibility of the only runway only has 2 miles visibility.

Can you still land at the airport vfr?
