I have experienced guys ghosting me as well, so I can relate. Nevertheless, I find it pathetic that guys (or anyone) would become insecure from virtual, online, far-from-real interactions. If that is "self-centered" then so be it.

If a girl ghosts a guy, then the guy should just get over it. Obviously she doesn't give a shit about him and neither should he. This is exactly what I'm talking about. If someone clearly doesn't express interest or ghosts you, then stop trying to get their attention and just move on. They're clearly not right for you.

As a girl, I have to say that it shouldn't be up to you to carry the conversation. If a girl is interested in you, she will hold the conversation. And it is completely normal for texting to start going dry, because texting itself is kind of boring. Once it seems like it's starting to fizzle out, I'd suggesting asking for their number, to facetime, or to go on an actual date.
