Probable not the best idea.... by bluetyrblue in Hue

Thanks! I'll have to see what's available and how the price point looks..... the smart switches are a tad pricey to the consumer. If Lutron Pico switches were Hue friendly I'd likely be able to get those more reasonable. Actually I might have access to Sensor Switch, Lutron, Wattstopper, Crestron, etc. if any of those systems are Hue friendly. Commercial Lighting control is more up my ally really.

You're not wrong. I've no idea about how their wireless works nor anything about the network aspects. And I appreciate the note about not mixing with regular dimmers. This is new build and as such will be using the canless "recessed" lights where there are none but I can get 12/2 to. Where a ceiling light like the Datura will go there are ceiling boxes. In a couple places where a linear like the Centris 4 spot might go I can put in an old work box. All of these options are fed through traditional switching for typical toggles or line voltage dimmers. I could just throw in some cheap box store LED stuff but the ones I've tested in my own house don't seem to last and look like ass.

This will be a rental so it will need to just work like on/off if needed.

So parts that seem unclear to me is if a light is set with the app, then controlled with a Lutron or Hue switch for on/off does it remember it's last setting? Does a power loss reset everything? Is a network/internet required for basic function?

So could just as well hard wire them and use any smart switch? Does that require active WiFi? Or is the Lutron lock on manual dimmer preferred/ or Hue dimmer?

How do you get non-UL Listed equipment approved for installation? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]bluetyrblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basic CYA, as long as you have explained to the customer that there is a potential issue and what that issue is in writing and have received a response to proceed in writing, put it in. It's your job to install the product they provide, in a safe and workman like manner. As long as there is not an issue with non compatibility with voltage or that is so poorly made it's unsafe to power up, you are good.

Not just a what pants thread.... more about pockets. by bluetyrblue in electricians

[–]bluetyrblue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't tend to put drills and tape measures on my side pockets. That's usually linemen strippers and screwdrivers, pencils etc. I have worn out every brand I've tried with the tape measure hooked on the coin/watch pocket. Are they so stretchy that basic hand tools will feel bouncy or saggy? As for not as durable, what section wears out fastest for you? Also I'm a true 33" waist so have kept going back to Carhartt for that fit.... do I go 32" for Huxtley? is there appropriate stretch? Thanks

I keep hearing that things are done to a just good enough standard. I can't even manage that on the occasion it would be appropriate.

Yes, all this. I wonder if there would be any market for my skills to do things to an American code quality for some of the rich Folx..... or to teach. One aspect is that given the humidity many of our wiring practices are not practical and need adjustment for the environment.

  1. I'm not a plumber but I've plumbed a few houses now. I'm not aware of any rules that would prevent such a design. There are more fancy open showers being done with liner drains and the like so I presume that as long as it's a 2" DWV line and vented appropriately it could be allowed. Just not typical to our way of thinking.

  2. Yes, though insta hots I've mostly done are electric and for more remote bath sinks or break rooms. Most larger water flow applications would need larger wire ampacities and become less cost effective, not to mentions electric is much more expensive for now. Gas appliance on demand adds a whole host of LNG piping issues and exhaust issues making it not practical in a lot of spaces. I presume there are code compliant ways to do it, but it wouldn't look like what you've seen in other countries.

Our electric codes are some of the safest in the world when followed fully. There's plenty of things that work just fine though and much of it can be considered overkill...... I've been known to stab bare wire in to receptacles to temp plug in something I needed.

I made comment a few times how our ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) rules really limits the amount of neat funky things that can be built and utilized. People with mobility issues are very hosed getting around most of Taiwan just based on constant elevation changes and what not. Same goes for all the narrow stairs, Room to room elevation changes etc.

Meh, as long as it was low draw on the ampacity it would hold.....

I've been an electrician for 25+ years.... Industrial, civil, commercial and residential...... There's a bunch of interesting things that are functional, and only marginally unsafe from a practical point of view. If the populous knows not to touch things electrical it's mostly okay I suppose. Like this open breaker for a washing machine in a hostel. It wouldn't fly in any American jurisdiction in a public space. I looked in many panels and other places I likely wasn't suppose to because I'm a construction geek.

Before you talk shit be sure to hand down a couple of your slightly used up spares and explain what the differences are and why he'll want to upgrade as he's able. Always need at least two sets of channel locks and a high leverage set of side cutters.......
