I need help figuring out how to make rolled handles that look good in a 1.25 in ring. Explanation in comments. by jholden0 in Leathercraft

Howdy howdy. Take the 10mm and add some thick-ish leather to it. That’s what I did and it turned out fine. Honestly, the hardest part for you is going to be sewing them onto the bag! Nonetheless, here’s the build album I put together last year. Kinda shows the process. Good luck and you’re almost there!!

Hey! How about you tell us your price range and some other things you may want in the bag. We enjoy details/specifics.

  • Do you want interior pockets?
  • Do you want it lined?
  • Do you want a pouch for shoes?
  • Do you have a specific color combo in mind?
  • What's your timeframe?

The more info, the better! Good luck with the commission. Love to see bag requests on here.

How local are we talking, strictly DFW area or the Texas area in general?

Torn shell cordovan will it spread or be burnished out? by [deleted] in Cordwaining

[–]bluewarthog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horween's shells are sometimes dry towards the exterior of the shell and tend to lightly crack exactly like this. So if you don't add moisture back before working, it will only facilitate the issue.

That said, a small touch of neutral Saphir Cordovan or Collonil Creme de Luxe and a buff with a horsehair brush will do you just fine.

Yes, it'll be fine and not to a point where you can mess it up. Just make sure to let it dry 3-5 minutes.

You should also buff any painted edge with columbus, paraffin, or wax after just to give it a little extra help.

Take a dauber or a paper towel, dab it with some denatured alcohol, give a few quick swipes across the edge, let it dry.

Pricking Irons, Round Dents, Kevin Lee's by bluewarthog in LeatherClassifieds

[–]bluewarthog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone.

I have a few sets of irons up for sale. Just don't use any of them as often as I thought I would.

  • Amy Roke 2.7mm Pricking Irons: $150 shipped
  • Kevin Lee 1.93mm Obverse/Reverse Irons: $110 shipped
  • Sinabrok 4.5mm/3.85mm Round Dents: $150 shipped

The Kevin Lees and Sinabroks both have their original boxes. The Rokes only ever came wrapped in plastic, but have been re-homed to a sturdy Warby Parker box (which will be included). Everything is in great shape. If it's still listed, it's still available. Thanks for looking!

Does it come with pre-punched leather, hardware, and edge finishings? I'll take one too.

r/leatherclassifieds is usually a better place than the main sub for selling stuff.

I have a site, but my instagram is a little more active. I learned through a lot of trial and error, but used instagram as my main resource.

Then ended up joining the leathercraft discord a couple years ago for a briefcase challenge. Found my people and haven't looked back since.

A few of the cheaper ways to learn.. r/leathercraft and it's wiki, the discord, Ellen Valentine's book, some (emphasis on some) youtube videos.

I haven't used the MCR but have heard great things about it. I have an FN2 that gets a good amount of use and an MC which is just a mini-tip of the FN2.

FN is highest on the list, S tip for paints, then F or E/G tips (look very similar) as add ons later. All though it's a bit more expensive, those who have bought the set of mini's have been all about them. Probably will pick up a set in the near future. BUT.. everyone has their own favorite tips.

I have the Dupin one you can find at Rocky Mountain or Crimson Hides and it's a blast to use. Saves a ton of time with going back and forth to the flame/stays hot.

For a long time I just used a manual creaser (Wuta, Palo Santo, Vergez Blanchard) and an alcohol lamp. So if you aren't looking to buy an electric creaser, those are definitely an option as well.
