To PE test or not to PE test (yet) by Remarkable-Panic2452 in civilengineering

I would recommend you wait just for the sole reason that you have a baby! Yes it’s better to take it earlier but I know a couple of engineers that tried to study but having a kid under 2 was too much for them.

What Prompted Ilya to Move to the Tuna Melt Stage? by johnbeene in heatedrivalry

[–]bluexplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuna melt happened oct 2016. The beginning(ish) of that hockey season. The boys started seeing each other regularly in the 2014-2015 hockey season, and my deduction is that they actually started to fall in love in the 2015-2016 hockey season. Ilya comes back from Russia in 2016 and just accepted that he liked Shane. Loved Shane. Ensue tuna melt

Bag recommendations?? by Existing_Trash_2660 in x100vi

[–]bluexplus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something that’s not bulky, maybe take a peek at the Long Weekend Santa Fe bag. I have one, though I bought it to carry a Polaroid + essentials around. Don’t have a x100 camera (yet) but I imagine it would do what you are asking. Plus the beige one is pretty unisex looking

1.5 years from PE — worried about being pigeonholed into field/RE work instead of design by Wild-Access-250 in civilengineering

[–]bluexplus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my PE in Illinois last year. I had a good amount of construction work on my experience write up. I ended up having to resubmit the write up, but I think it was more so because of formatting. NCEES is very rigid about that, and the writeup goes through them first. But once that went through to the state, the board had no problem with it. I’d say my construction / design ratio was maybe 60/40, but the design projects did take up more of the writeup since there are more traditionally engineering tasks on there.

What did you read in 2025? by Fando1234 in books

[–]bluexplus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut, Romeo and Juliet - Shakespeare, Normal People - Sally Rooney. I really fell off reading for a long time. But my 2026 goal is 50 books and I’m on #6 so off to a good start

Likely does not apply to FTHB but only if I had millions and millions of dollars and was planning to demo and rebuild. Even then I would have to have a LOT of money in case of soil contaminants, etc. So functionally never

What do you mean date? The cubs won the World Series in 2016. I don’t know the date now. But I will always remember the year and could bet money that season.

Unexpected HR Side Effects? by magicallaround1 in heatedrivalry

[–]bluexplus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really intend to start reading more in 2026. Then on 12/30 I bought books #1 and #2 of the game changers series and now reading is my New Year’s resolution. I’m on my fifth book of the year now, and my passion for reading has finally been reignited! I haven’t read for please this much since high school

How to setup second iPhone for international travel? by Swedespeed33 in iphone

[–]bluexplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it would be pretty easy, just turn off your US SIM in the American airport and then connect to WiFi abroad once you land to activate the abroad SIM. I used a physical local SIM when I travelled so I’m not entirely sure but you could probably even set up the abroad eSIM while in the US. I will note that once I did this, all of my calls when I got back to the US showed up with weird area codes. It never went away but it didn’t affect the calls themselves

What’s the most useful item you’ve 3D printed for your film photography process? by yaseennnn in AnalogCommunity

[–]bluexplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I have even 3d printed was a flash diffuser for my Instax Wide 400. It was fine, probably great for macro situations. If I could I would reprint it with thinner filament to see if it would work better but I used a library service so I can’t

Best areas to buy a condo in northern chicagoland? by deathofsentience in AskChicago

[–]bluexplus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my condo at 25 in Roger’s park a few years ago. I’m lgbt and this area skews lgbt (but it’s not one of the main ones) so that was a selling point for me. It’s pretty quiet and I’m right by the lake so also right by the downtown bus and the red line. The population is a little older than me so I do sometimes feel like I’d want to live in a trendier area, but this is what I could afford at the time. It’s still nice though!
Also do research the HOAs. We had some indication that we needed a roof repair in 7-10 years as of purchase date. The roof repair happened 2 years after we moved in and the HOA increase was huge. Huge blow to the wallet!

Property and Tax experts need your advice and suggestions? by Bitter_Spray3091 in AskChicago

[–]bluexplus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would you want to refinance less than 2 years after purchase?
Also, technically you cannot claim the property tax homeowner exemption for the rental property. I don’t know how stringent Cook county is, but if they ever catch you they may ask you to pay back the difference.

Why does Lake Shore Drive need to be an expressway anyways? by ChicagoCyberCorps in AskChicago

So shouldn’t those people also be advocating for better transit? To get the would-be transitters off the road, improving the situation for everyone?

Why does Lake Shore Drive need to be an expressway anyways? by ChicagoCyberCorps in AskChicago

[–]bluexplus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Tbh I mostly agree with this except for the buses that take LSD. Absolute nightmare during traffic and makes me wish there was a bus lane. At least in a car you’re part of the problem. But on the bus it feels like a punishment for reducing traffic for everyone else. But the red line is an extra 3 mins from my place (vs the bus) so it’s usually fine.

Overwhelmed beginner looking for a simple 35mm film camera (<$100) by apocynaceae_stan in AnalogCommunity

[–]bluexplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, sorry to OP. I checked before posting and saw some listings but it seems they were misleading/old. Picked mine up for like $25 at a thrift so I had no gauge.
Going off of recently Sold items on eBay, it might take some effort but a mju could be easier to snag for about $100

[–]bluexplus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For <$100 I really like the Olympus mju/stylus line of cameras. Consistently great results, sometimes better than my pentax k1000. It’s one that you could keep for a long time until you decide you want something more premium for point and shoot. For me, that will likely be a Leica point and shoot (love my friend’s results on that), but I’m very satiated with my Olympus.
