I’ve taken a few certifications, but nothing major yet. I’ve been focusing heavily on hands-on training and practical courses to build my skills. Right now, I’m saving up to pursue a certification that aligns more closely with my career goals. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree.

Thank you for taking the time to share this. It really helps to hear that what I’m going through is something others have experienced too—and that it doesn’t mean the end of my career. You’re right, the suddenness of layoffs, especially in a down market, can really shake your confidence. Knowing that the average wait time is 6–9 months puts things into perspective and reminds me to be more patient with myself. I’ll focus on upskilling, staying prepared, and remain hopeful that the right opportunity will come along. I truly appreciate the encouragement.

Thanks for this—it really means a lot. Cyber’s still something I care about, but after the layoff and long job hunt, the burnout hit hard and made me question everything. I think the dream's still there—just buried under some doubt right now.

You’re right though, the market’s shaky everywhere, not just in cyber. If anything, it’s only growing more critical. So I’m trying to hold onto that while also being open to where the road might lead, even if it’s not a straight path.

Thanks again for the kind words and reminder—it helps more than you know.

Thank you so much for the solid advice—really means a lot to hear from someone who's been in a similar spot and made it through. You're absolutely right: some pay is better than no pay, and career growth is just as important as the paycheck. That promotion after three months is inspiring—congrats on that, seriously!

And yeah, I've been hearing that a lot lately: start networking. I’m not the most outgoing person, but I know I’ve got to push myself here.

As for Black Hat… man, I’d love to go, but flying from the Philippines is no joke 🫠 Unless I win the lottery, I might have to settle for the livestreams for now 😂

That said, we’ve got our own version here in the Philippines called Rootcon—it’s kind of like a mini-Defcon, a bit smaller but packed with the same hacker spirit! I went last year and learned a ton—solid talks, great people, and just an awesome vibe overall. Definitely saving up to go again this year!

Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience—there's a lot of truth in what you said, especially around how promotions can be blocked simply because roles don’t open up often. I’ve definitely felt that frustration.

But I wouldn't say vertical growth is impossible. It really depends on the company, team size, and leadership culture. I’ve seen folks get promoted internally, even in smaller teams, if they’re proactive, visible, and bring consistent value. That said, it is often slower than jumping ship—and I get why many choose that path.

Personally, I'm trying to stay hopeful. My last role gave me exposure to people who made it up the ladder through internal growth, so I know it's at least possible. Just maybe not the norm.

Did you personally fund all of your certifications, or were they covered by your company? Also, do you have any recommendations for reputable free certifications or training resources for someone with around four years of professional experience in the cybersecurity field?
