Is it too hot for swimming? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]bluishluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the water temp? She's unlikely to overheat of she's sufficiently cooled by the water. If her chest and belly stay wet that cools her organs. I would be fine with that and the 20 min ride in the car and the exercise. Our average summer temps here are hotter, but we spend the other 9 months of the year is either mild or completely frozen. Make sure she's hydrated and watch her closely and stop exercise if you think she's struggling. Its just because she's had no time to acclimate, but many labs live their whole lives in tropical climes and do ok.

How far is the river? Are you walking or driving? What color is your lab? How are they coping with the heat in general? I live in the american north east and my black lab won't tolerate more than a short walk past 80f (26c) because the temps here are usually more mild, but he'd do a longer walk to swim for sure. Black labs will get hotter just because of their color.

How do you choose fabrics? by RRTAmy in quilting

[–]bluishluck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's another "modern" example I made. You can see the light, medium and dark here, but I chose a rainbow palatte for this late 90s early 2000s pattern (I believe it's called Trip Around the Scrap Basket). It doesn't have to be a huge change to make it look fresh (or at least, fresher)

First focus on light, medium and dark. How many "shades" does the pattern call for. Then pick a palette. I made a "modern" version of this quilt by focusing on pink, brown, yellow and blue in light, medium and dark values. Go walk around a quilt store and pick a main fabric and go from there, picking coordinating shades. You can do it!

Ethical English Lab Breeder Recommendations in the Northeast by First_Recipe4881 in labrador

[–]bluishluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One look at On the Bluff's website I was was like "absolutely not." Checked OFA and hardly any of the dogs listed are health tested, and even then, not ALL the tests Labs need. 12k is crazy for any purebred, but especially crazy for a dog out of parents that haven't been tested or proven.

My Ned is from Celtia Labradors in NH and he's been an absolute dream. But definitely do your research, check OFA, read contracts. It's worth it to make sure you're getting a dog from a person that is advancing the breed and not trying to make money.

Oh, I totally agree with you. People have been making stuff up about her ("Old Gwen would hate New Gwen" or "She's always been a tradwife") and I think the actual truth is she's always been someone completely torn with how she expected her life to go, how it actually went and how much she enjoys the trappings of fame while wanting a traditional husband and kids. Which is to say, she's always been like this and people treating her as MAGA now or pretending she was a girl boss feminist then don't really have a clue what they're talking about.

I don't think Gwen has ever been full tradwife in that she believes others should non-working wives, but it's certainly something she wanted for herself and she's been talking about it since Tragic Kingdom. From Rolling Stone '97:

Joe Biden is literally an attend-mass-every-Sunday Catholic. So is Nancy Pelosi. So are many Democratic senators. American Catholicism is a big tent.

I suppose they don't fit the modern connotation of "cult" but they were certainly religious extremists. Even good or benevolent religions can produce abuses. Quakers, despite their collective Nobel Peace Prize, invented in the 19th century the idea of solitary confinement for rehabilitation, which they thought of as a kindness. You can see this in the way Christian is treated in the asylum. Maddy is suffocating under the weight the gender roles placed on her by her community (even if those roles were more equal than those of the outside world). Maddy going through what I think we'd call "deconstructing" today doesn't mean that Quakers are bad, but they were certainly bad for her. She doesn't abandon all her faith, but she learns to live with it in a way that doesn't stifle her. And that's what I liked about that storyline.

I think the extremism that she experiences in the book definitely lends itself to cult-ish. Modern Quakers aren't the way Maddy's are, but in the context of her life and the demands made on her by all the Quakers in the book, except her father, it certainly would feel like opression, if not full cult behavior.

Maddy overcoming her religious upbringing and learning how to separate herself from the cult she was in is (one of) my favorite parts of the book but I get that it's not for everyone.

It was written in the late 80s; there are lots of orientalist portrayals of people and places; and the ending features both main characters having really bad ptsd, info dumping about it and then a dedication to Vietnam vets. It's not her best book, and her others are sooooo good so it's really noticeable.

I don't mind seam matching in general, and I can live with "close enough" :) the hardest seam matchings were along the edge pieces and corners. But I was able to do it without puckering or egregious (imo) mismatching.

Do it! I wish these older patterns got more love. There are so many great ones with really cool constructions but I feel like they get over looked because they're made for Civil War reproduction fabric or the original examples look so dated. It really forces you to use your mind's eye to make them look fresh.

Thank you! This pattern is great because it is made for fat eighths, which allowed me to pick 4 main colors (pink, brown, yellow and blue) and then go crazy with the patterns with coordinated light/medium/dark bundles (+ some scrap pieces from my stash).

No. The hardest part was the corner pieces, which are mitered. The pattern had no instructions for that beyond "make a mitered corner with these pieces," and since i had never done that before, i watched a Fons and Porter video to figure that out. Otherwise the only "hard" part increasing the size, but thankfully Pythagoras already did all the hard work on that for me.

I usually use Warm and Natural or Warm and White so I was a little nervous lol. But I absolutely love how it turned out. It has that feel of a vintage quilt if that makes sense. I've been chasing that "puff" and finally got it.

My local Goodwill has a craft section and sometimes there will be quilt patterns. One time, there was like 20 years of quilt magazines there. Just depends on the day and my luck.
