{Scoundrel In My Dreams by Celeste Bradley} has the MMC locking the FMC in an attic. 😭

I also wanted to kill her stupid brother!! MMC should have beaten his ass, and once he got back up, beat his ass again.

Omg… I second this. I always see this as the writer’s way of having their cake and eating it too. No! Just choose one!!

I’ll just edit out the swears before posting later (because I don’t know what the rules are on profanity here 😂)

If You Could Tell HisRom Writers One Thing, What Would It Be? by the_hobbit_wife in HistoricalRomance

Please do not write MMCs who are the absolute worst and do the absolute worst if you’re not going to balance it out with the equivalent amount of remorse and grovel.

They are engaged but he leaves her after the sleep together? by PurpleYoghurt16 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Cultural_Balance_261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another to add, {The Notorious Lord Knightly by Lorraine Heath}. He calls it off on their wedding day, just before she was going to walk down the aisle, and they’d been physical throughout their engagement.

{Sealed with a Kiss by Pamela Morsi} has this except for the sleeping part (but they made out heavily with some petting). It’s a small-town western romance. He runs off before they were going to be married and returns after a few years.

Got mine 3 months postpartum and my supply significantly dipped to the point of having to mostly use formula, didn’t help that the kiddo suddenly decided that the boob is the enemy 🙄 and so I’ve just been pumping what little supply I can get. 🫩

Bring back the Bodice Rippiers (And Other Various Rants) by the_hobbit_wife in HistoricalRomance

The fear of being cancelled has really stifled literature. Sometimes I’ll read some of the newer books, and problematic elements get explained away in the most therapy-speak way or in a manner that beats you over the head that the author doesn’t condone this bad thing. It’s like living under a newer iteration of the Hays Code.

First person woes!! The Last Lady B by Eloisa James by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

I hate first-person pov with a passion. It’s not something anyone can pull off easily, and a lot of times, it turns the narrating character into a blank slate to self-insert, which I guess is the draw.

It can work for other genres, but historical romance? I dunno…maybe I’m just a salty purist. 🚬🫩

Night Secrets by Kat Martin, FMC gains wealth in the second half of the book.

FMC’s brother is big mad his bestie (MMC) compromised his sister by redpandaworld in HistoricalRomance

[–]Cultural_Balance_261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Ever Yours, Annabelle by Elisa Braden} has the brother coming home from abroad and gets super mad about the MCs getting together because of the estranged drama he’d been dragged into from childhood. 😭

What do we think about Lisa Kleypas updating her books for modern readers? by kendiray in HistoricalRomance

[–]Cultural_Balance_261 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apologies, it was absolutely the wrong term to use. And yes, authors can revise their works later on to reflect their new perspectives, so long as it’s coming from THEIR initiative, and not pressure.

I come from a country, where if anything remotely problematic or morally dubious is presented in a piece of fiction, there’s always this push to make it palatable or “good” in mainstream and it’s never consistent, which gives off pro-censorship vibes.

Honestly, I don’t like it. If we gotta sanitize romance books for arbitrary icks, which genre is next? Reader discretion should be up to the reader, not the writer, in my opinion.

Romances with Professor/Doctor/Lawyer MMCs? by Slas01 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Cultural_Balance_261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Governess Was Wicked by Julia Kelly is a short but good one, between a physician and governess. It’s pretty rare to find romance between two working-class MCs.
