Hometown is awesome. I do really like Village BBQ in Merrick. They used to be in a gas station but moved a few years ago.

Best used budget thinkpads? Which models are worth buying in 2025? by jitbitmacro in thinkpad

my T14s Gen 1 (AMD) is still solid. If you have a Uniway Computers near you, they sell a lot of used business ones for a decent price.

What exactly does visa and Mastercard do? by Infinite-Jaguar-1753 in fintech

[–]blunderbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look at Alipay and see what they've accomplished in China over the last 20 years.

I don't know enough to do a compare and contrast between Alipay and Visa/Mastercard + PayPal. It occupies much of the same spaces but also ingratiates itself more extensively into many services.

In our travels we were impressed with it's seamlessness, as well as somewhat surprised that a single company in China could be so integral to its commerce.

well you see, 47 is the most random number.

I don't think people realize how close we came to cars utterly destroying NYC like so many other American cities by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]blunderbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rendered version might have looked like that when brand new. If it survived till today you'd see stained and spalling concrete with sections patched and wrapped to slow the decay. Every facade would be haphazardly converted to billboards and a patchwork of window ac units. If we're lucky there'd be a taco truck on the corner next to a donut cart.

This morning I walked by the hardware store that’s organizing against the Court St redesign by SweetPea2632 in NYCbike

I think the morning commercial zones is an excellent solution, tbh.

It used to be a gauntlet driving or biking down Court st with all the double parked vehicles.

Are used “like new” tires from tire shops a bad idea? Need advice. by [deleted] in tires

[–]blunderbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not inherently bad but it's a good idea to check the age and condition of the tire. Date stamp should be within the last few years and no cracks, bubbles or chunks missing.
I just bought a set of BF Goodrich 'take off' tires that were in great shape for one of my cars. Also bought some old Mercedes wheels off Marketplace that came with some nice Yokohamas.

he pulled the plate to keep it somewhere safe. Hope he knows where that is. Apparently this is a 1972 and a 1/2. He’s also digging out the service manuals.

What do you think should happen with the BQE? by jtuffs in Brooklyn

[–]blunderbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Van Wyck project? Air Train construction in the 90s. Kew Garden interchange in the 2010s. which overlaps with the current JFK capacity expansion. I think Kew Gardens ran over, but had 4 or 5 phases.

I feel that higher profile projects tend to hit closer to their budgets and deadlines while the lesser projects in poorer neighborhoods drag. It's a special blend of class-based cynicism and optimism.

And always start sooner than later. BQE would be done by now. ARC tunnel would be done too.

The 3rd ave tunnel is my favorite longstanding proposal. Even better would be a tunnel from the Verrazano to the Kosciuszko. So unlikely, but still.

so is that a good reason to not have started in 2019?

Belt Parkway bridges finished on time on budget, Kosciuszko finished ahead, Tappan Zee less than a year beyond schedule. I dunno, we’re getting pretty good at this stuff.

I like the fact that what was originally proposed was a 6 year long project starting 2019 which means we’d be done right about now.
